Politics of tangibility, intangibility, and place in the making of a European cultural heritage in EU heritage policy

2016

The EU has recently launched several initiatives that aim to foster the idea of a common European cultural heritage. The notion of a European cultural heritage in EU policy discourse is extremely abstract, referring to various ideas and values detached from physical locations or places. Nevertheless the EU initiatives put the abstract policy discourse into practice and concretize its notions about a European cultural heritage. A common strategy in this practice is ‘placing heritage’ – affixing the idea of a European cultural heritage to certain places in order to turn them into specific European heritage sites. The materialisation of a European cultural heritage and the production of physic…

Traditional Craft Skills in the Contemporary Latvian Rural Environment

2016

This article intends to give an insight into what place the traditional craft skills occupy in the contemporary Latvian rural environment, using as a point of observation the activities of the ‘Meet your Master!’ event, organised by the Latvian National Centre for Culture. The interest of both the society and the individuals in focusing on the traditional cultural heritage is encouraged by the desire for expressing their cultural identity in today's cosmopolitan world. The same motivation prompts the use of traditional knowledge in rural tourism, in the activities of individual manufacturers etc. Traditional skills are the basis for mutual interaction among the community members and a meani…

Transnational Heritage in the Making. Strategies for Narrating Cultural Heritage as European in the Intergovernmental Initiative of the European Heri…

2014

The idea of a transnational cultural heritage has become topical in Europe because of the new EU heritage initiatives, such as the European Heritage Label scheme. Even though the scheme is administered at the European level, its implementation is transferred to heritage agents in the countries participating in the initiative. How do the heritage agents narrate the labeled heritage sites as European? Using the method of narrative analysis, this article identifies six key strategies of making sense of a European cultural heritage. Even though the scheme includes certain frameworks in which the heritage agents have to interpret and narrate the sites as European, it enables them to interpret th…

From Conservation to Revitalization. Ambiguous and Critical Conditions in the Heritage Conservation Experiences of Erice

2022

The plans and the evolutionary trends of policies and practices implemented in Erice old town, in the south of Italy, in the western part of Sicily, can be considered a case study of total conservation as highly representative of Italian urban planning of the last 60 years. This paper aims to deal with the actual problems and the perspective of sustainable development of the historical centre of Erice, by adopting the approach of urban and territorial regeneration. This paper also highlights the historical and cultural context in which the Gubbio Charter (issued in 1960) is affirmed; i.e. the most appropriate approaches to historical urban centres; what we can learn from Erice’s integral co…

3D survey and modelling of the main portico of the Cathedral of Monreale

2018

3D survey and modelling of Cultural Heritage allow to store a great deal of 3D data that can be managed for different purposes. 3D models can be used for documentation, restoration and knowledge of historic architectures and monuments. In this work, a 3D survey of the main portico of the Cathedral of Monreale (Palermo, Italy) was carried out. The paper presents the data acquisition process and the 3D modelling phase. The work is aimed to reconstruct a 3D model that could be used also to set up an HBIM (Heritage or Historic Building Information Modelling) of the main portico. The result of this study could be considered as a first test to implement an HBIM platform for the whole monumental c…

Bullfighting: The Legal Protection of Suffering

2018

Bullfighting has been recently accepted as Cultural Heritage by the Spanish Government. There is a current initiative to declare bullfighting as Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and include it in the UNESCO list. The proponents of such initiatives contend that bullfighting should be protected and promoted on the grounds that it is an artistic activity, part of the national culture. In this chapter, I discuss the moral arguments and legal aspects that can be pitted against such a cruel practice. More specifically, I will examine the serious obstacles to the legal protection of such practices, which cause suffering and aim at killing nonhuman animals based on cultural or artistic reasons.

From Geophysics to Microgeophysics for Engineering and Cultural Heritage

2011

The methodologies of microgeophysics have been derived from the geophysical ones, for the sake of solving specific diagnostic and/or monitoring problems regarding civil engineering and cultural heritage studies. Generally, the investigations are carried out using different 2D and 3D tomographic approaches as well as different energy sources: sonic and ultrasonic waves, electromagnetic (inductive and impulsive) sources, electric potential fields, and infrared emission. Many efforts have been made to modify instruments and procedures in order to improve the resolution of the surveys as well as to significantly reduce the time of the measurements without any loss of information. This last poin…

Città Invisibili of Teatro Potlach: A Journey to Rediscover Our Cultural Heritage

2017

Città Invisibili is a multidisciplinary art project made by the Italian company Teatro Potlach. Compared to the canonical theatrical performances, Città Invisibili, being in its essence a site-specific performance, interacts with the place where it grows. With the project, the Italian group builds next to the existing space of the place (physical space and memory space) other two spaces, the space of the staging and the space of the performer, using different materials, in particular cloths and video projections. Moreover Teatro Potlach conducts a historical, anthropological and social research trying to bring out the latent memory of places. All these interventions bring out from the place…
