Mate preferences in Argentinean transgender people
2018
Transgender people provide a unique opportunity to examine the effect of biological sex versus gender identity on mating preferences. This study aimed at identifying the mate characteristics that are most and least valued by transgender people and at examining to what extent their biological sex or their gender identity determined their mate preferences. A convenience sample of 134 male‐to‐female (MTF) and 94 female‐to‐male (FTM) individuals from Argentina rated Buss's list of 18 mate attributes. Compared to FTM, MTF individuals placed significantly more emphasis on attractiveness and socioeconomic status, whereas FTM, more than MTF individuals, valued partners with a dependable character. …
Non-starter lactic acid bacteria used to improve cheese quality and provide health benefits
2010
Non-starter lactic acid bacteria (NSLAB) dominate cheese microbiota during ripening. They tolerate the hostile environment well and strongly influence the biochemistry of curd maturation, contributing to the development of the final characteristics of cheese. Several NSLAB are selected on the basis of their health benefits (enhancement of intestinal probiosis, production of bioactive peptides, generation of gamma-aminobutyric acid and inactivation of antigenotoxins) and are employed in cheese-making. This review describes the ecology of NSLAB, and focuses on their application as adjunct cultures, in order to drive the ripening process and promote health advantages. The scopes of future dire…
A Ciliary Motility Index for Activity Measurement in Cell Cultures With Respiratory Syncytial Virus
2018
[EN] Background: The respiratory epithelium is frequently infected by the respiratory syncytial virus, resulting in inflammation, a reduction in cilia activity and an increase in the production of mucus. Methods: In this study, an automatic method has been proposed to characterize the ciliary motility from cell cultures by means of a motility index using a dense optical flow algorithm. This method allows us to determine the ciliary beat frequency (CBF) together with a ciliary motility index of the cells in the cultures. The object of this analysis is to automatically distinguish between normal and infected cells in a culture. Results: The method was applied in 2 stages. It was concluded fro…

An innovative method for the detection of contaminant viral genome in cell cultures
2012
The use of cell cultures involves different fields of biology, from diagnosis to research. Moreover, technologies based on animal cells represent a useful tool to the development of biological products for the prophylaxis and therapy in humans and animals. Therefore, it is necessary to perform quality controls, including virological tests. Several tests performed in research laboratories are able to discriminate one or more viral species, but it is not possible to demonstrate the presence of contaminant viral genome with one non-specific method. The aim of this work consisted on the realization of a biomolecular method able to detect and to identify by sequencing extraneous viral genome in …
Physical, chemical and morphological changes of bread polyphenol extract on cellular cultures monolayer CaCo-2
2013
The effect on potential transepithelial electrics resistance (TEER) and the electronic scansion microscopy analysis (SEM) of CaCo-2 cells line monolayer could be one useful method to study the different antioxidant or pro-oxidant capacity values of different concentrations of the hydrolizated polyphenol extracts of bread made with wheat Sant’Agata cultivar (HBPE).The various concentrations of HBPE have been tested on culture in monolayer CaCo-2 cells seeded on polycarbonate filter, in the cell culture chamber (Ø 6.5 μm; area 0.33cm2; pore Ø 0.4 μm), at a density of 1.5x105 cells per filter and placed in a multiwells Falcon; the filter divided the chamber in apical and basal compartments tha…

Co-construct territorial cultures
2015
International audience; Carrying out investigations in the framework of the scientific network INTI (International Network of Territorial Intelligence, http://inti.hypotheses.org/), the main idea is here to value the contribution of multiple approaches in territorial information and communication science that can be experienced there. Inspired by the triad of Pestalozzi, these experiences have applied and adapted the territorial engineering approach "Catalyse" in their territories. From the cooperative structuring of information to concrete initiatives of local change, communication processes make possible iterations between understanding and action, in which the analysis of the effects of s…
A multiphase multiobjective dynamic genome-scale model shows different redox balancing among yeast species of the saccharomyces genus in fermentation
2021
Yeasts constitute over 1,500 species with great potential for biotechnology. Still, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae dominates industrial applications, and many alternative physiological capabilities of lesser-known yeasts are not being fully exploited. While comparative genomics receives substantial attention, little is known about yeasts’ metabolic specificity in batch cultures. Here, we propose a multiphase multiobjective dynamic genome-scale model of yeast batch cultures that describes the uptake of carbon and nitrogen sources and the production of primary and secondary metabolites. The model integrates a specific metabolic reconstruction, based on the consensus Yeast8, and a kinetic …
