The path of liberation. Women’s associationism and workers’ cultures in the Second Republic (1931-1936)

2021

Introduction: Impression(s)

2019

This is the introduction to the volume "Impression(s)". The articles presented in this cluster discuss literary and visual impressions from the premise that literary impressionism and printmaking share the trope of impression as “impress” and as “imprints” in a technical and epistemological sense. Most works on Impressionism and literary impressionism dwell on the genealogy and mutual influence of fiction and painting, but few authors tackle the importance of printmaking. The five essays presented here all examine impressions as theme, trope and technique in 19th and 20th-century texts and images. These essays discuss intermedial practices, the mutual influence of artistic practice and text…

Il Paradigma della Città Fluida

2013

In current global crisis the strong flows of financial social and relational capitals that powered urban regeneration over the last fifteen years are no longer available to be tapped in an indiscriminate manner as was the case until just a few years ago. The most dynamic cities in the future will no longer be those that are able to attract urban projects and investors driven by the real estate market or leisure-based development but the cities that have deep and different cultural resources and that are able to use them as the basis for creating new urban cultures and for generating new economic values. Revitalising waterfront is no longer easy opportunity for long-term investments or for using the financial capital gains of corporation or hedge funds but a more creative-driven port city has to provide precious opportunities for real development – not only quantitative but more and more qualitative – that is able to produce effects in both the domain of collective assets and that of private capitals.Settore ICAR/21 - Urbanistica

Giarraffa and Grossa di Spagna naturally fermented table olives: Effect of starter and probiotic cultures on chemical, microbiological and sensory tr…

2014

Abstract This work investigated on the effects of selected starters and of probiotic strains on the evolution of microbiota, on trend of volatile compounds and on the final sensorial traits of green table olives. The olives, belonging to Giarraffa and Grossa di Spagna cultivars, were processed according to Sicilian traditional method and the following samples were obtained: (1) un-inoculated spontaneous olives, control; (2) olives inoculated with probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus H25; (3) olives inoculated with commercial probiotic L. rhamnosus GG; (4) olives inoculated with Lactobacillus plantarum GC3 plus Lactobacillus paracasei BS21; and (5) olives inoculated with L. plantarum GC3 plus L…

Languaging across cultures

2013

As a theoretical notion, 'languaging' denotes a fluid system of communication that is constructed and performed by individuals during 'collaborative dialogue'. In language learning, the term 'languaging' has been defined as: “the process of making meaning and shaping knowledge and experience through language” (Swain 2006: 98). Swain continues, likening languaging to reformulating, where the intent is not to change meaning but the form to improve learning (maybe writing down the thoughts, or talking about and explaining what has been writen) so that the meaning is clear or acceptable to another reader or listener. Liddicoat and Scarino (2013: 61), in their discussion of intercultural teachin…

Inclusion of Trehalose (TRH) into liposomes to regulate uptake of this cryoprotectant into human hepatocytes.

2009

Purpose. Problems with the limited availability of human hepatocytes for cell transplantation may be overcome by improving the efficiency of their cryopreservation. TRH-loaded liposomes could enhance epatocyte viability by regulating the intracellular uptake of the cryoprotectant [1]. Methods. TRH-loaded liposomes were prepared by film hydration method (EPC, sodium cholate, 200mM TRH solution) [2]. Liposomal size was determined by dynamic light scattering. Intraliposomal TRH content was measured using the Megazyme spectrophotometric method. After incubation (1-5 h, 37°C, 5% CO2, 95% RH) of human hepatocytes with TRH-loaded liposomes or equivalent TRH solution, intracellular sugar content wa…

In vitro evidences of epithelial to mesenchymal transition in low cell-density cultured human fetal hepatocytes

2017

Abstract Culturing fetal hepatocytes in high cell-density allowed stabilization of the hepatocyte phenotype up to 8 weeks, including the maintenance of liver-specific functions. On the other hand, when cultured at low cell-density, fetal hepatocytes underwent morphological modifications and acquired fibroblastic morphology. Since a switch from E-cadherin to vimentin expression accompanied these changes, we hypothesized the occurrence of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition when fetal hepatocytes were cultured at low cell-density. Changes in gene expressionsuch as up-regulation of fibrosis-related geneswere also observed, suggesting that the low cell-density culture system promoted the acqui…
