Critical Planes in Multiaxial Fatigue

2005

The paper includes a review of literature on the multiaxial fatigue failure criteria based on the critical plane concept. The criteria were divided into three groups according to the distinguished fatigue damage parameter used in the criterion, i.e. (i) stress, (ii) strain and (iii) strain energy density criteria. Each criterion was described mainly by the applied the critical plane position. The multiaxial fatigue criteria based on two critical planes seem to be the most promising. These two critical planes are determined by different fatigue damage mechanisms (shear and tensile mechanisms).

A microscopic model for long-term laser damage in calcium fluoride

2009

Single crystal calcium fluoride (CaF 2 ) is an important lens material in deep-ultraviolet optics, where it is exposed to high radiation densities. The known rapid damage process in CaF 2 upon ArF laser irradiation cannot account for irreversible damage after long irradiation times. We use density functional methods to calculate the properties of laser-induced point defects and to investigate defect stabilization mechanisms on a microscopic level. The mobility of the point defects plays a major role in the defect stabilization mechanisms. Besides stabilization by impurities, we find that the agglomeration of F-centers plays a significant role in long-term laser damage of CaF 2 . We present …

Modeling the Fatigue Damage Evolution in Welded Joints

2017

The present paper presents a two-phase model for the fatigue damage evolution in welded steel joints. The argument for choosing a two-phase model is that crack initiation and subsequent crack propagation involve different damage mechanisms and should be treated separately. The crack initiation phase is defined as the number of cycles to reach a crack depth of 0.1 mm. This phase is modelled based on the Dang Van multiaxial stress approach. Both a multiaxial stress situation introduced by the acting loads and the presence of the multiaxial welding residual stresses are accounted for. The local notch effect at the weld toe becomes very important and the irregular weld toe geometry is character…

Optimal control circuitry design for the digital p53 dynamics in cancer cell and apoptosis

2009

AbstractExperimental work and theoretical models deduce a "digital" response of the p53 transcription factor when genomic integrity is damaged. The mutual influence of p53 and its antagonist, the Mdm2 oncogene, is closed in feedback. This paper proposes an aerospace architecture for translating the p53/Mdm2/DNA damage network into a digital circuitry in which the optimal control theory is applied for obtaining the requested dynamic evolutions of some considered cell species for repairing a DNA damage. The purpose of this paper is not to improve the analysis of the actual mathematical models but to demonstrate the usefulness of such digital circuitry design capable to predict and detect the …

α-stable distributions for better performance of ACO in detecting damage on not well spaced frequency systems

2014

Abstract In this paper, the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is modified through α -stable Levy variables and applied to the identification of incipient damage in structural components. The main feature of the proposed optimization is an improved ability, which derives from the heavy tails of the stable random variable, to escape from local minima. This aspect is relevant since the objective function used for damage detection may have many local minima which render very challenging the search of the global minimum corresponding to the damage parameter. As the optimization is performed on the structural response and does not require the extraction of modal components, the method is pa…

Some observations on the regularizing field for gradient damage models

2000

Gradient enhanced material models can potentially preserve well-posedness of incremental boundary value problems also after the onset of strain softening. Gradient dependent constitutive relations are rooted in the assumption that some scalar or tensor field, which appears in the yield function, has to be enriched by adding a term involving its second-order gradient field. For gradient-dependent plasticity this term is universally accepted to be the equivalent plastic strain. For gradient-dependent damage models different choices have been presented in the literature. They all possess the desired regularization of the solution, but they are not identical as regards the structural response. …

A non-linear Ritz method for progressive failure analysis of variable angle tow composite laminates

2022

A Ritz formulation for non-linear analysis of damage initiation and evolution in variable angle tow composite plates under progressive loading is presented. The model is built on a few key items. It assumes first order shear deformation theory kinematics and non-liner strains in the von Karman sense. The constitutive relationships are formulated in the framework of continuum damage mechanics at the ply level, so that each laminate layer can experience in-plane damage initiation and evolution, then reflected in material softening and loss of local stiffness. A Ritz polynomial expansion of the primary variables and the minimization of the total potential energy provide the discrete solution e…

A coupled plasticity-damage cohesive-frictional interface for low-cycle fatigue analysis

2022

A novel thermodynamically consistent cohesive-frictional model for the analysis of interface degradation and failure under either monotonic quasi-static loading or cyclic loading in low-cycle fatigue problems is proposed. Starting from the definition of a suitable Helmholtz energy density function, a phenomenological interface model is developed in the framework of plasticity and damage mechanics. In particular, a coupled plasticitydamage activation function is defined and employed together the consistent evolution rules to capture the evolution of damage and plasticity under the action of the external loads. Due to the specific features of such threshold and flow rules, the initiation and …

Finite elements with embedded interphases for strain localization in quasi-brittle materials

2023

The paper presents a continuous-discontinuous numerical strategy for sim- ulating localized failure in structures made of quasi-brittle materials using finite elements. The strategy is based on observing acting stresses scenarios, when a diffuse degradation is followed by high deformation bands localizing in certain regions of the structure. The numerical strategy should encom- pass both situations in accordance with the material’s constitutive model. This objective is achieved by introducing a thin layer into a finite element at a certain level of the deformation process. In this study, the thin layer is modeled for the first time by an interphase mechanical device whose consti- tutive beh…
