Nuovi diritti umani e nuovi soggetti: i diritti delle generazioni future
The thesis deals with the subjects of rights of future generations through both philosophical and legal perspective. The Introduction considers the phenomenon of new subjects in legal theory and, more widely, the outbreak of new human rights related to the technological development. The First Chapter faces the problem of the definition of “future generations” and identifies three different approaches. The first one, the “Remotist” approach, defines “future generations” just as the future humankind extremely distant from the present time. The second, the “Proximist” approach, looks at “future generations” as a concept involving exclusively our direct descendants. The third one, the “Indeterm…

‘Women-protective’ language as a tool of exclusion: Debates on oocyte donation in Latvia
2018
‘Women-protective’ language is broadly used as a frame in political discussions on women’s reproductive healthcare and labour rights. This article addresses the use of ‘women-protective’ language in online news articles in the Latvian media about the proposed prohibition of oocyte donation for nulliparous women. The main focus of the recent Latvian debate has not been on the technology itself, but rather on the female body and women’s rationality and decision-making capacity. The results of the analysis show that use of the ‘women-protective’ frame positions women as victims, increases control over the female body and restricts women’s rights to make autonomous decisions. The application of…
Has the Push for Equal Gender Representation Changed the Role of Women on German Supervisory Boards?
2017
In Germany, an intensive public debate about increasing female participation in leadership positions started in 2009 and proceeded until the beginning of 2015, when the German parliament enacted a board gender quota. In that period, the share of women on supervisory boards for 111 German publicly listed and fully codetermined companies (i.e. those which are affected by the quota law) more than doubled from 10.6 percent in 2009 to 22.6 percent in 2015. In 2016, the first year when the law was effective, the female share increased again by 4.5 percentage points. Using a hand-collected dataset, we investigate whether the rise in female board representation was accompanied by a change in gender…
Omission of Quality Software Development Practices : A Systematic Literature Review
2018
Software deficiencies are minimized by utilizing recommended software development and quality assurance practices. However, these recommended practices (i.e., quality practices) become ineffective if software professionals purposefully ignore them. Conducting a systematic literature review (n = 4,838), we discovered that only a small number of previous studies, within software engineering and information systems literature, have investigated the omission of quality practices. These studies explain the omission of quality practices mainly as a result of organizational decisions and trade-offs made under resource constraints or market pressure. However, our study indicates that different aspe…
“Izrādes sabiedrība", simulācija un hiperrealitāte. Salīdzināšanas perspektīvas
2017
Essays on the Performance, Subsidization and Internationalization of Social Enterprises
2020
Social enterprises are hybrid organizations that tackle societal challenges by using conventional business models. Being hybrid organizations means that social enterprises pursue dual objectives: social (developmental) and financial. By taking performance, subsidization and internationalization perspectives, this thesis contributes to understanding the hybridity of social enterprises and how this hybridity drives their general operations and key decisions such as foreign market selection and targeting strategy.
