The angle of repose of spherical grains in granular Hele-Shaw cells: A molecular dynamics study
2007
We report the results of three dimensional molecular dynamic simulations on the angle of repose of a sandpile formed by pouring mono-sized cohesionless spherical grains into a granular Hele-Shaw cell. In particular, we are interested to investigate the effects of those variables which may impact significantly on pattern formation of granular mixtures in Hele-Shaw cells. The results indicate that the frictional forces influence remarkably the formation of pile on the grain level. Furthermore, We see that increasing grain insertion rate decreases slightly the angle of repose. We also find that in accordance with experimental results, the cell thickness is another significant factor and the an…
Estimating Mean Lifetime from Partially Observed Events in Nuclear Physics
2022
Abstract The mean lifetime is an important characteristic of particles to be identified in nuclear physics. State-of-the-art particle detectors can identify the arrivals of single radioactive nuclei as well as their subsequent radioactive decays (departures). Challenges arise when the arrivals and departures are unmatched and the departures are only partially observed. An inefficient solution is to run experiments where the arrival rate is set very low to allow for the matching of arrivals and departures. We propose an estimation method that works for a wide range of arrival rates. The method combines an initial estimator and a numerical bias correction technique. Simulations and examples b…
FIRST MEASUREMENT OF THE STRANGE QUARK ASYMMETRY AT THE Z(0) PEAK
1995
A measurement of the strange quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Z0 peak was performed using 718,000 multihadronic Z0 decays collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1992. The s-quark was tagged by the presence of high momentum charged kaons identified by the Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector and by Λ0;s decaying into pπ-. The s-quark purity obtained was estimated for the two hadrons to be 43%. The average s-quark asymmetry was found to be 0.131±0.035 (stat.) ±0.013 (syst.). The forward-backward asymmetry was measured for unresolved d-and s-quarks, tagged by the detection of a high energy neutron or neutral kaon in the Hadron Calorimeter. The combined d-and s-quark purity was 69% and th…
Cosmological origin of anomalous radio background
2012
The ARCADE 2 collaboration has reported a significant excess in the isotropic radio background, whose homogeneity cannot be reconciled with clustered sources. This suggests a cosmological origin prior to structure formation. We investigate several potential mechanisms and show that injection of relativistic electrons through late decays of a metastable particle can give rise to the observed excess radio spectrum through synchrotron emission. However, constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy, on injection of charged particles and on the primordial magnetic field, present a challenge. The simplest scenario is with a greater than or similar to 9 GeV particle decaying i…
Surface-barrier effects in the microwave second-harmonic response of superconductors in the mixed state
2005
We report on transient effects in the microwave second-harmonic response of different type of superconductors in the mixed state. The samples have contemporarily been exposed to a dc magnetic field, varying with a constant rate of 60 Oe/s, and a pulsed microwave magnetic field. The time evolution of the signal radiated at the second-harmonic frequency of the driving field has been measured for about 500 s from the instant in which the dc-field sweep has been stopped, with sampling time of ∼0.3 s. We show that the second-harmonic signal exhibits two relaxation regimes; an initial exponential decay, which endures roughly 10 s, and a logarithmic decay in the time scale of minutes. Evidence is …
A measurement of the K-S lifetime
2002
A measurement of the K_S lifetime is presented using data recorded by the NA48 experiment at the CERN-SPS during 1998 and 1999. The K_S lifetime is derived from the ratio of decay time distributions in simultaneous, collinear K_S and K_L beams, giving a result which is approximately independent of the detector acceptance and with reduced systematic errors. The result obtained is tau_S=(0.89598 +- 0.00048 +- 0.00051)x10^(-10) s, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.
Observation ofηc(1S)andηc(2S)decays toK+K−π+π−π0in two-photon interactions
2011
We study the processes γγ→K_S^0K^±π^∓ and γγ→K^+K^-π^+π-π^0 using a data sample of 519.2fb^(-1) recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider at center-of-mass energies near the Υ(nS) (n=2, 3, 4) resonances. We observe the η_c(1S), χ_(c0)(1P) and η_c(2S) resonances produced in two-photon interactions and decaying to K^+K^-π^+π^-π^0, with significances of 18.1, 5.4 and 5.3 standard deviations (including systematic errors), respectively, and report 4.0σ evidence of the χ_(c2)(1P) decay to this final state. We measure the η_c(2S) mass and width in K_S^0K^±π^∓ decays, and obtain the values m(η_c(2S))=3638.5±1.5±0.8 MeV/c^2 and Γ(η_c(2S))=13.4±4.6±3.2 MeV, wher…
A measurement of the antineutrino asymmetry B in free neutron decay
2005
Abstract We have measured the antineutrino asymmetry B in neutron beta decay, i.e., the correlation of the neutron spin and the antineutrino momentum, with a new method. Our result is B = 0.967 ± 0.006 stat ± 0.010 syst = 0.967 ± 0.012 . Statistical and systematic uncertainty can be considerably reduced in future experiments.
Measurements of Branching Fractions andCP-Violating Asymmetries inBMeson Decays to Charmless Two-Body States Containing aK0
2003
We present measurements of branching fractions and \CP-violating asymmetries in decays of $B$ mesons to two-body final states containing a \Kz. The results are based on a data sample of approximately 88 million \upsbb decays collected with the \babar detector at the \pep2 asymmetric-energy $B$ Factory at SLAC. We measure $\BR(\Bp\to\Kz\pip) = (22.3 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.1)\times 10^{-6}$, $\BR(\Bz\to\Kz\piz) = (11.4\pm 1.7\pm 0.8)\times 10^{-6}$, $\BR(\Bp\to\Kzb\Kp) < 2.5\times 10^{-6}$, and $\BR(\Bz\to\KzKzb) < 1.8\times 10^{-6}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, and the upper limits are at the 90% confidence level. In addition, the following \CP-violating a…
Alternative approach to populate and study the $^{229}Th$ nuclear clock isomer
2019
A new approach to observe the radiative decay of the $^{229}$Th nuclear isomer, and to determine its energy and radiative lifetime, is presented. Situated at a uniquely low excitation energy, this nuclear state might be a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, a nuclear laser and the search for time variations of the fundamental constants. The isomer's $\gamma$ decay towards the ground state will be studied with a high-resolution VUV spectrometer after its production by the $\beta$ decay of $^{229}$Ac. The novel production method presents a number of advantages asserting its competitive nature with respect to the commonly used $^{233}$U $\alpha$-decay recoil source. In this …
