Modeling and Verification of Symbolic Distributed Applications Through an Intelligent Monitoring Agent
2022
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) represent a key component in emerging distributed computing paradigms such as IoT, Ambient Intelligence, and Smart Cities. In these contexts, the difficulty of testing, verifying, and monitoring applications in their intended scenarios ranges from challenging to impractical. Current simulators can only be used to investigate correctness at source code level and with limited accuracy. This paper proposes a system and a methodology to model and verify symbolic distributed applications running on WSNs. The approach allows to complement the distributed application code at a high level of abstraction in order to test and reprogram it, directly, on deployed network…
Retinal image synthesis through the least action principle
2020
Eye fundus image analysis is a fundamental approach in medical diagnosis and follow-up ophthalmic diagnostics. Manual annotation by experts needs hard work, thus only a small set of annotated vessel structures is available. Examples such as DRIVE and STARE include small sets for training images of fundus image benchmarks. Moreover, there is no vessel structure annotation for a number of fundus image datasets. Synthetic images have been generated by using appropriate parameters for the modeling of vascular networks or by methods developing deep learning techniques and supported by performance hardware. Our methodology aims to produce high-resolution synthetic fundus images alternative to the…
Depicting life, analysing the power: The ‘actuality’ of Italian cinema
2014
The increasing production of biographical films dealing with power and its figures raises interesting questions about the nature and the aims of political cinema. What are the strategies used to represent people whose public image has completely overlapped to their identity? This matter concerns not only thematic aspects of the biopic genre, but more in depth it discloses fundamental issues at the basis of any theory of cinema. From this point of view, some Italian instances propose original solutions, creating a coherent framework in continuity with a long tradition that has marked the history of Italian thought. This article aims at making a survey of these inputs through the analysis of …
Social Media and Crowd Diagnosis
2022
The chapter aims at exploring social media platforms as used by individuals to obtain (first or second) opinions in the form of crowd-diagnosis (Nobles et al. 2019) within a social media-critical discourse study (SM-CDS, KhosranoviNik 2018a) perspective. This study explores the communicative ‘territory’ of medical history presentation and, more particularly, it reports results on the communicative skills used by online users to present their own history and design it as challenging. To this end, this work adopts a critical discourse-based perspective on the language used for history-giving. I shall focus on the communicative resources which are employed by patients to be ‘visible’ at the in…

Rapidly growing mycobacteria in TB/HIV co-infection: a report of two cases focusing on difficulties in diagnosis and management.
2012
Recent reports indicate an increase in rates of infection and disease due to rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM) in patients with pre-existing chronic lung disease. Studies have described difficulties in correctly identifying closely related species, even when proper methodologies are adopted, and several different gene targets have been proposed. We describe two cases of RGM infection in a 29-year-old HIV-1 positive Congolese man and a 19-year-old HIV-1 positive Liberian woman, respectively, both with bronchiectasis due to previous Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection. Mycobacterium porcinum and Mycobacterium bolletii were identified in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and sputum, respect…

PRESENTAZIONE ECOGRAFICA DELL’EPATOCARCINOMA: ESPERIENZA DI UN SINGOLO CENTRO NELL’ARCO DI TRE DECENNI
2019

AIMS. Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common genetic cause of premature coronary heart disease (CHD) due to lifelong elevated plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. This paper aims to describe the problem of FH underdiagnosis and undertreatment and to promote CHD prevention providing recommendations for the screening and treatment of patients with FH. Methods and results. In many countries, less then 1% of FH patients are diagnosed, although the estimated prevalence of this condition is about 1/500 for heterozygous FH and the results of FH screening in a general population of Northern Europe suggest a prevalence of 1/200. Studies on FH patients agree on a widespre…
Characterisation of patients with familial chylomicronaemia syndrome (FCS) and multifactorial chylomicronaemia syndrome (MCS): Establishment of an FC…
2018
Data presented in this article are supplementary material to our article entitled "Identification and diagnosis of patients with familial chylomicronaemia syndrome (FCS): expert panel recom mendations and proposal of an "FCS Score" (Moulin et al., 2018, in press). The data describe the genotypes of patients with familial chylomicronaemia syndrome (FCS) and multifactorial chylomicro naemia syndrome (MCS), from the validation and replication cohorts.
