Klinik und Therapie der frhen lepromatsen Lepra an einem Fallbeispiel

1994

Taking into account the increase in worldwide human migration, leprosy is of growing importance in the differential diagnosis of dermatological diseases encountered in Central Europe. We report on the case of a young man from Ghana who developed hypopigmented maculae and plaques on his trunk and proximal limbs. The diagnosis of lepromatous leprosy could be made in consideration of the histological pattern of infiltrating leucocytes and detection of numerous acid-fast mycobacteria on skin biopsy. The results of the physical examination as well as routine laboratory and immunological parameters were consistent with this form of leprosy. Due to glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency, tre…

Subclinical Cardiotoxicity: The Emerging Role of Myocardial Work and Other Imaging Techniques.

2021

In recent years, the cancer survival of patients has improved thanks to advances in the pharmacological field. In many guidelines, cardiotoxicity induced by anticancer drugs was defined as a reduction from baseline in the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) assessed by echocardiography. It is known that LVEF is not a sensible parameter in the detection of cardiotoxicity. Therefore, a decrease from baseline in the global longitudinal strain (GLS) or troponins elevation is used to detect subclinical cardiotoxicity. LVEF and GLS as well as the increase in some biomarkers are influenced by loading conditions that are frequent during chemotherapy. Other parameters not influenced by loading…

A CAD system for nodule detection in low-dose lung CTs based on region growing and a new active contour model

2007

A computer-aided detection (CAD) system for the selection of lung nodules in computer tomography (CT) images is presented. The system is based on region growing (RG) algorithms and a new active contour model (ACM), implementing a local convex hull, able to draw the correct contour of the lung parenchyma and to include the pleural nodules. The CAD consists of three steps: (1) the lung parenchymal volume is segmented by means of a RG algorithm; the pleural nodules are included through the new ACM technique; (2) a RG algorithm is iteratively applied to the previously segmented volume in order to detect the candidate nodules; (3) a double-threshold cut and a neural network are applied to reduce…

Quantification and Characterization of Pulmonary Emphysema in Multislice-CT

2003

The new technology of the Multislice-CT provides volume data sets with approximately isotropic resolution, which permits a non invasive measurement of diffuse lung diseases like emphysema in the 3D space. The aim of our project is the development of a full automatic 3D CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) software tool for detection, quantification and characterization of emphysema in a thoracic CT data set. It should supply independently an analysis of an image data set to support the physician in clinical daily routine. In this paper we describe the developed 3D algorithms for the segmentation of the tracheo-bronchial tree, the lungs and the emphysema regions. We present different emphysema des…

Myofascial pain associated to trigger points: a literature review. Part 2: differential diagnosis and treatment.

2010

During the last decades the advance in knowledge of myofascial pain has been constant in the medical and dental community. However, although several aspects have been clarified in relation to its epidemiology, clinical characteristics and etiopathogenesis, many uncertainties remain. Many clinical conditions are included in the differential diagnosis of myofascial pain associated to trigger points. A good anamnesis and clinical exploration is thus required in order to ensure correct diagnosis and treatment. Among the numerous treatments used in application to trigger points, the spray-and-stretch technique and direct injection targeted to such trigger points have been found to be the most ef…

How general dentists could manage a patient with oral lichen planus

2018

Background The literature hardly contains information on how patients suffering from oral lichen planus could be managed by dentists. Material and Methods Based on the limited available literature and particularly on the long-term clinical and histopathological experience of one of the authors, suggestions on how dentists could manage patients with oral lichen planus have been put forward. Results: In most cases, the dentist should be able to establish a correct diagnosis. Results In most cases, the dentist should be able to establish a correct diagnosis. Occasionally, the dentist may call upon a specialist, usually an oral medicine specialist or an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for confir…

A clinical diagnosis of oral leukoplakia: A guide for dentists

2017

Background In view of the many white or predominantly white lesions of the oral mucosa it is a challenge for dentists to clinically identify a leukoplakia, being a potentially (pre)malignant lesion. Material and Methods Based on the available literature and experience of the authors the parameters of a clinical diagnosis of oral leukoplakia have been studied. Results A guide has been presented that should help dentists to establish a clinical diagnosis of leukoplakia as accurate as possible. Conclusions Probably in most parts of the world dentists will need the help of a specialist for confirmation or exclusion of the clinical diagnosis of oral leukoplakia and for further management of the …

Management of the oral hemangiomas in infants and children : scoping review

2019

Background Pediatric oral hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors that can be seen from birth, particularly in females. Hemangiomas are most frequent located in the lips and usually regress spontaneously, thus they do not require any type of treatment in most cases. The present scoping review pretended to synthesize the most relevant and currently available information from the international dental literature published in the last 25 years, regarding the management of pediatric oral hemangiomas. Material and Methods An exhaustive literature search was performed in four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane). Initially, 241 related titles and abstracts were found.…

Novel non-invasive Adjunctive Techniques for Early Oral Cancer Diagnosis and Oral Lesions Examination

2012

Oral cancer is a potentially fatal disease with an increasing incidence and an unchanged 5-year mortality rate. Unfortunately, oral cancer is often still late diagnosed, which leads to an increase in the likelihood of functional impairment due to treatment and mortality rate. Definitive diagnosis of oral cancer must be confirmed by scalpel biopsy and histological assessment. However despite its benefits, scalpel biopsy is invasive and it is burdened by a potential morbidity. Furthermore, previous studies have suggested a high degree of intraobserver and interobserver variability regarding the histological evaluation of malignancy. As a consequence, in recent years there has been a growing a…
