Vitrification of preimplantation genetically diagnosed human blastocysts and its contribution to the cumulative ongoing pregnancy rate per cycle by u…

2008

Objective To evaluate the survival rate and clinical results of our vitrification procedure on preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) blastocysts and to calculate its actual contribution to the reproductive outcome per cycle. Design Retrospective clinical study. Setting University Institute IVI, Valencia, Spain. Patient(s) Patients who requested cryotransfer of surplus PGD blastocysts after failed fresh elective transfer. Intervention(s) Retrospectively collected data during 2 years of experience with blastocyst vitrification. Main Outcome Measure(s) Primary outcome measures were the following: blastocyst recovery and survival; cryotransfer cancellation; and the implantation, pregnancy (PR…

Fetus acardius: two- and three-dimensional ultrasonographic diagnoses.

2001

Objective. To determine whether ultrasonographic detection of acardiac fetuses and diagnostic accuracy of related malformations improve with complementary use of two-dimensional ultrasonography, three-dimensional ultrasonography, and Doppler scanning. Methods. Three pregnant women with multifetal gestations who were found to have discordant fetuses on initial two-dimensional ultrasonographic scanning were subsequently scanned with three-dimensional ultrasonography and color Doppler ultrasonography. Results. Although the possibility of acardiac fetuses was entertained in all cases after two-dimensional ultrasonographic scanning, the diagnosis was confirmed, and the accuracy and extent of fet…

A European survey of management approaches in chronic urticaria in children: EAACI Paediatric Urticaria Taskforce

2021

Background: Although well described in adults, there are scarce and heterogeneous data on the diagnosis and management of chronic urticaria (CU) in children (0-18 years) throughout Europe. Our aim was to explore country differences and identify the extent to which the EAACI/GA²LEN/EDF/WAO guideline recommendations for paediatric urticaria are implemented. Methods: The EAACI Taskforce for paediatric CU disseminated an online clinical survey among EAACI paediatric section members. Members were asked to answer 35 multiple choice questions on current practices in their respective centres. Results: The survey was sent to 2,773 physicians of whom 358 (13.8%) responded, mainly paediatric allergist…

Brainstem reflex circuits revisited

2004

Our current understanding of brainstem reflex physiology comes chiefly from the classic anatomical-functional correlation studies that traced the central circuits underlying brainstem reflexes and establishing reflex abnormalities as markers for specific areas of lesion. These studies nevertheless had the disadvantage of deriving from post-mortem findings in only a few patients. We developed a voxel-based model of the human brainstem designed to import and normalize MRIs, select groups of patients with or without a given dysfunction, compare their MRIs statistically, and construct three-plane maps showing the statistical probability of lesion. Using this method, we studied 180 patients with…

Reference Standards for Software Evaluation

1990

AbstractThe field of automated ECG analysis was one of the earliest topics in Medical Informatics and may be regarded as a model both for computer-assisted medical diagnosis and for evaluating medical diagnostic programs. The CSE project has set reference standards of two kinds: In a broad sense, a standard how to perform a comprehensive evaluation study, in a narrow sense, standards as specific references for evaluating computer ECG programs. The evaluation methodology used within the CSE project is described as a basis for presentation of results which are published elsewhere in this issue.

Uncontrolled early morning blood pressure in medicated patients: the ACAMPA study

2002

BACKGROUND A blood pressure surge during the early morning may help to precipitate cardiovascular events. The objective of this study was thus to assess the blood pressure behaviour profile of early morning blood pressure in patients receiving antihypertensive treatment. DESIGN The ACAMPA study is a multi-center, open, prospective, observational study that was carried out by 24 investigators in Spain. METHODS Two hundred and ninety patients with essential hypertension who had been receiving the same antihypertensive treatment for at least 2 months were included in the study. Office blood pressure was measured before taking medication in the morning, and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monito…

Ambulatory blood pressure during diseases of the kidney

1999

During the last few years there has been a renewal of interest in blood-pressure-induced kidney damage due to a progressive increase in the incidence and prevalence of hypertension and vascular diseases as a cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The need to prevent ESRD demands a continuation of effort to make the early identification of hypertensives who are at risk possible and to provide them with effective antihypertensive therapy. Since ambulatory blood pressure monitoring has been used successfully to assess blood pressure and identify risk markers for cardiovascular diseases, a logical approach would be to use it also to identify the risk markers for ESRD. Higher than normal perce…

Molecular characterization and Phylogenetic analysis of Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) in Erysimum linifolium L. in Italy

2013

In the Summer of 2012, Erysimum linifolium L. pot plants produced at an ornamental grower in Liguria region (northern Italy), showed unusual virus-like disease of dark mottle and stripes on mauve-purple petals. A virus was mechanically transmitted from symptomatic flowers to several test plant species belonging to Chenopodiaceae and Brassicaceae families. This virus was identified as an isolated of turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) by PAS-ELISA analysis, electron microscopy negatively stained crud extracts and immuno-electron microscopy (IEM) tests. In the naturally infected E. linifolium plants, TuMV occurred alone, since any other viruses either by electron microscopy or mechanical inoculations …

The concept of major depression. III. Concurrent validity of six competing operational definitions for the clinical ICD-9 diagnosis.

1991

The comparative validity of six operational diagnoses of major depression was evaluated in 600 psychiatric inpatients using the independently assessed clinical ICD-9 diagnoses as a yardstick. Agreement with, and positive predictive value for the ICD-9 categories of pure (endogenous and psychogenic) depression served as validation criteria; sensitivity of major depression diagnoses for detecting ICD-9 bipolar depressions was additionally used for examining the adequacy of width, time and exclusion criteria of the competing operational definitions. Three essential results were found. First, the "old" diagnostic definitions of RDC and FDC are superior to all newer definitions because they defi…
