Understanding variations in survival for colorectal cancer in Europe: a EUROCARE high resolution study

2000

BACKGROUND—Marked differences in population based survival across Europe were found for colorectal cancers diagnosed in 1985-1989.
AIMS—To understand the reasons for these differences in survival in a new analysis of colorectal cancers diagnosed between 1988 and 1991.
SUBJECTS—A total of 2720 patients with adenocarcinoma of the large bowel from 11 European cancer registries (CRs).
METHODS—We obtained information on stage at diagnosis, diagnostic determinants, and surgical treatment (not routinely collected by CRs) and analysed the data in relation to three year observed survival, calculating relative risks (RRs) of death and adjusting for age, sex, site, stage, and determinants of stage.

CERAD neuropsychological battery total score in multinational mild cognitive impairment and control populations: the AddNeuroMed study.

2010

An important focus in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research is the development of methods for early diagnosis. Despite progress with some other biomarkers, sensitive and specific neuropsychological measures for identifying subjects in the prodromal phase of AD remain the most promising early diagnostic tool. We evaluated the value of the composite score for the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's disease Neuropsychological Battery (CERAD-NB) in Europeans with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and in control populations. Baseline clinical data were analyzed from 223 healthy elderly and 224 subjects with MCI from the prospective AddNeuroMed study carried out in Finland, France, Greec…

Delay in the Diagnosis of Breast and Colorectal Cancer in People With Severe Mental Disorders

2020

Background People with severe mental disorders have a worse cancer prognosis, with higher mortality rates than the general population, and this could be partially attributed to a later detection. Breast cancer and colorectal cancer have mass population screenings in Spain, but the influence in early diagnosis is unknown in persons with severe mental disorders. Objective To compare the severity of breast and colorectal cancers at diagnosis in people with and without mental disorders. Methods This was an observational, retrospective, case-control study with 1:2 matching performed in Eastern Spain. Data were retrieved for analysis from electronic medical records. Results The study included 111…

Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy for In Vivo Diagnosis of Early Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the Esophagus

2007

Background & Aims: Confocal laser endomicroscopy has been shown to allow direct histologic imaging of gastrointestinal tumors in vivo. This study was designed to assess the potential of endomicroscopy for predicting histology in vivo during routine endoscopy in patients with early squamous cell cancer. Methods: Twenty-one consecutive patients with suspected early squamous cell cancer who had been referred for endoscopic therapy to a tertiary-care academic medical center were included in this prospective study. After staining with 0.5% Lugol's solution and injection of 500 mg fluorescein sodium, unstained mucosal areas were examined using confocal imaging. Images of each scanned lesion were …

Conclusions from the histological diagnosis of low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia in Barrett's oesophagus.

2007

It is well known that low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN) in Barrett's oesophagus (BE) might progress to high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGIN) or carcinoma. Since accurate diagnosis of LGIN is difficult, general pathologists are frequently uncertain about the diagnosis of LGIN and its follow-up risks. The purpose of this study was to analyse the divergence between the diagnoses of general and specialized gastrointestinal pathologists.Fifty consecutive patients with a previous diagnosis of LGIN in BE, made by a general pathologist, were included in our study. The histopathological slides of every patient were reassessed in a blinded fashion by two specialized gastrointestinal (G…

Esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis: review of symptoms including upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

2001

Background Esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis (EIP) is a rare condition manifested by multiple, flask-shaped outpouchings in the wall of the esophagus, which represent dilated excretory ducts of esophageal mucous glands. Study Five patients with EIP were evaluated with regard to symptoms and concomitant diseases, as well as endoscopic, radiologic, and manometric findings. Results Primary clinical symptoms reported by the five patients (three men and two women; age range, 59–72 years) were increasing dysphagia (n = 3), upper gastrointestinal bleeding (n = 1), and no symptoms (n = 1). Concomitant diseases were chronic alcoholism (n = 3), diabetes mellitus (n = 1), and reflux esophagit…

Gastrointestinal stromal tumour of the rectum: Report of a case and review of literature

2008

Gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) is a rare tumour of the gastrointestinal tract which does not generally originate in the rectum. The authors describe a case of a 70-year-old man who underwent an anterior resection of the rectum for a low-risk GIST. The patient was not given adjuvant chemotherapy with imatinib and is still disease-free 30 mo after surgery. The authors conclude that although rectal GIST is extremely uncommon, it should be included in differential diagnosis when a tumour in the rectum is detected. Biopsy of the tumour is essential, since this makes it possible to reach a sure preoperative diagnosis based on the immunohistological features of the CD117 and CD34. Although…

Chronic pharmacological treatment in takotsubo cardiomyopathy.

2008

Abstract Background Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a disorder that has been appreciated only recently. In most of reported cases, this syndrome mimes an acute myocardial infarction. Till this moment no data are available from literature about the treatment in the acute phase of this disease. Aim of the study In our multicentric experience we have retrospectively looked at the benefits of a treatment with ACE-inhibitors, beta-blockers, Aspirin and calcium channels blockers, started until the early phases of the disease and continued for 30 days, in 36 patients affected by Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. We chose as endpoint of the study the efficacy of the used drug in improving left ventricular myoc…

Prenatal diagnosis and carrier detection in mucopolysaccharidosis type II by mutation analysis. A 47,XXY male heterozygous for a missense point mutat…

1994

Identification of iduronate-2-sulphatase (IDS) gene mutations in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II, Hunter syndrome) allows fast and reliable carrier detection and prenatal diagnosis. We describe here three cases of prenatal diagnosis by direct detection of the gene mutation. In addition to two affected male fetuses from two different families, a 47,XXY fetus carrying both the normal and the mutant allele was diagnosed in a third family. The latter pregnancy was carried to term and the child is obviously not affected by MPS II.
