Use of TaqMan® real-time PCR for rapid detection of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi

2014

We evaluated the performances of a newly designed real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using TaqMan® probes to detectSalmonellaTyphi. TaqMan® real-time PCR assays were performed by designed primers and probe based on thestaGgene for detectingS.Typhi. The specificity of the assay was evaluated on 15Salmonellaserovars. The analytical specificity was evaluated on 20 non-Salmonellamicroorganisms. The analytical sensitivity was assessed using decreasing DNA quantities ofS.Typhi ATCC 19430. Finally the detection capability of the TaqMan® real-time PCR assay on isolates recovered from patients withSalmonellainfections was compared to the conventional PCR assay. OnlyS.Typhi strain had po…

The Chaperone System in Salivary Glands: Hsp90 Prospects for Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Malignant Tumors

2022

Salivary gland tumors represent a serious medical problem and new tools for differential diagnosis and patient monitoring are needed. Here, we present data and discuss the potential of molecular chaperones as biomarkers and therapeutic targets, focusing on Hsp10 and Hsp90. The salivary glands are key physiological elements but, unfortunately, the information and the means available for the management of their pathologies, including cancer, are scarce. Progress in the study of carcinogenesis has occurred on various fronts lately, one of which has been the identification of the chaperone system (CS) as a physiological system with presence in all cells and tissues (including the salivary gland…

Hsp27 and Hsp60 in human submandibular salivary gland: Quantitative patterns in healthy and cancerous tissues with potential implications for differe…

2021

Tumors of the submandibular salivary gland (SMG) are uncommon but sufficiently frequent for the physician to consider them in routine examinations and for the pathologist to be prepared to differentiate them from other tissue abnormalities. However, scarcity of specimens makes training difficult, a situation compounded by the lack of accepted universal diagnostic guidelines. Furthermore, there is little information on the chaperone system (CS) of the gland, despite the increasing evidence of its participation in carcinogenesis as a biomarker for diagnosis and patient follow up, and in the mechanisms by which the tumor cells thrive. We are investigating this aspect of various tumors, and her…

ARTIFICIAL STONE IN ARCHITECTURE: NEW TECHNIQUES OF INTERVENTION IN THE UTVEGGIO CASTLE IN PALERMO

2011

The development of new techniques and instruments for use in the field of the preservation, conservation and valorisation of Cultural Heritage is in continuous growth. This is evident in the many valuable scientific and technological improvements being implemented through projects financed by research institutions, universities and private companies. To make this renewed progress effective however, it is necessary to promote the creation of interdisciplinary research teams with different skills, to carry out new experiments and to define new methodologies and protocols.

Development of “Design of Experiments” for modelling direct expansion air-conditioning systems under variable cooling loads and faulty operating cond…

2019

Air conditioning systems are widely adopted in the building sector and are generally responsible for high energy consumption. Part of this consumption is related to the poor maintenance adopted by plant owner over time, which causes energy performance degradation. Typical faults, such as fouling or improper refrigerant charge have been shown to heavily impact on energy consumption of these systems. In order to support cost-effective maintenance schedule, Fault Detection and Diagnosis Technique are under investigation in the world. However, in order to devise a diagnostic method a preliminary modelling of air conditioning system is due. To this aim, a test procedure which requires the least …

Performance maps for an air-cooled air conditioning system as a preliminary instrument for the diagnosis of evaporator fouling

2018

During the past few decades, there has been increased interest in the development of automated approaches for detecting and diagnosing faults in air conditioning systems. One diagnostic approach involves the use of exergy analysis. As a first step towards understanding the application of exergy analysis to diagnostics, this work is focused on the thermodynamic and exergy analysis of a direct expansion air conditioning system used in small commercial building applications. The analysis was carried out by means of experimental activities on a 17.5 kW rooftop unit installed at the Herrick Laboratories, Purdue University, Indiana (USA). The system under investigation was equipped with a variabl…

On the reliability of thermoeconomic diagnosis of fouled evaporators: assessing the influence of geometries, operating conditions and reference state

2015

Thermoeconomic diagnosis of refrigeration systems is a pioneeristic approach, which has been proven to achieve good performances (under favorable conditions) for the detection of specific faults such as condenser and evaporator fouling and compressor valve leakage. In this paper the sensitivity of performance in detecting fouled Direct Expansion (DX) coils is investigated; the examined parameters are the temperature and relative humidity of coil inlet air and the sensible/latent heat ratio of the coil (varied by considering different numbers of rows). As the thermoeconomic model requires splitting the specific exergy of cooling air into “mechanical”, “thermal” and “chemical” fractions, and …

A New Protection Strategy for Electrical Distribution Systems

2010

In this paper, the authors propose a new protection strategy for electrical Medium Voltage distribution networks, based on a distributed intelligence system composed of a central unit and of many local processing units. The distributed intelligence system can precisely identify and locate faults in suitably limited times. Each local processing unit is composed of a data acquisition system and a data analysis system. The first allows the accurate reconstruction of the fundamental using only 1.5 cycles of under fault transient electrical quantities. The second performs suitably precise on-line fault diagnosis based on the data provided by the data acquisition module. The data acquisition algo…
