Malaltia i salut en l'obra de Francesc Eiximenis
2010
Food consumption and nutrient intakes with a special focus on milk product consumption in early pubertal girls in Central Finland
2005
AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the current status of dietary intakes in early pubertal girls with a special focus on milk products.DesignCross-sectional data using 3-day food records.SubjectsEight hundred and sixty girls, aged 10–12 years, at Tanner maturation stage I-III.ResultsThe mean consumption of milk products (620 g day−1) was similar to that of a Finnish study in the 1980s, while the consumption of non-milk drinks (403 gday−1) had increased. Twelve per cent of the girls had a dairy-restricted diet and consumed significantly less milk products than girls with a non-restricted diet (465 vs. 644 g day−1, P<0.001). Girls with low milk product consumption had the highest non-milk drinks…

Complement C6 deficiency protects against diet-induced atherosclerosis in rabbits.
1998
Abstract —Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) can be transformed to an atherogenic moiety by nonoxidative, enzymatic degradation. Enzymatically degraded LDL induces macrophage foam cell formation, provokes release of cytokines, and also activates complement. To determine whether complement activation may contribute to atherogenesis, 6 pairs of homozygous C6-deficient rabbits and their non–C6-deficient heterozygous siblings were fed a cholesterol-rich diet for 14 weeks. Cholesterol levels and plasma lipoprotein profiles of the animals in the C6-competent and C6-deficient groups did not significantly differ, and the high density lipoprotein and LDL cholesterol ratios at the end of the experiment w…
The Dietary Inflammatory Index and asthma burden in children: A latent class analysis
2021
Introduction: Unbalanced dietary intake has been increasingly recognized as an important modifiable risk factor for asthma. In this study, we assessed whether a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with higher asthma burden in three steps: (1) identification of asthma latent classes (LC) based on symptoms, indoor exposures, and pulmonary function; (2) identification of risk factors associated with LC membership; and (3) estimation of the probabilities of LC membership with variation in DII. Methods: A cross-sectional study on 415 children aged 5–14 years (266 with persistent asthma and 149 controls). LC analysis was performed in asthmatic children. The DII was calculated based on a semiquant…
Nutrition and acne: therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets.
2011
The influence of nutrition on skin health is a growing research area but the findings of various studies on the effect of diet on the development of acne have often been contradictory. The general opinion among researchers has oscillated between two different, opposing positions: that diet either is or is not a key factor for acne development. This review examines the evidence supporting an influence of various dietary components on the development of acne particularly focusing on the role played by carbohydrates. The physiological and biochemical effects of the ketogenic diet are examined from this perspective and mechanisms will be proposed via which this type of diet could have a role in…
Magnesium metabolism in hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
2007
The increasing evidence for the clinical relevance of altered magnesium metabolism to states of altered insulin resistance confirms the role of magnesium deficit as a possible underlying common mechanism of the "insulin resistance" of hypertension and altered glucose tolerance. The pioneer work of Lawrence M. Resnick and his group using the cellular ion-based approach that we are only partially presenting here has consistently contributed to the progress of the field, demonstrating (a) the critical importance of magnesium metabolism in regulating insulin sensitivity as well as vascular tone, and blood-pressure homeostasis; (b) that magnesium deficiency, defined on the basis of intracellular…
Effects of calcium, dairy product, and vitamin D supplementation on bone mass accrual and body composition in 10-12-y-old girls: a 2-y randomized tri…
2005
Little is known about the relative effectiveness of calcium supplementation from food or pills with or without vitamin D supplementation for bone mass accrual during the rapid growth period. The purpose was to examine the effects of both food-based and pill supplements of calcium and vitamin D on bone mass and body composition in girls aged 10-12 y.This placebo-controlled intervention trial randomly assigned 195 healthy girls at Tanner stage I-II, aged 10-12 y, with dietary calcium intakes900 mg/d to 1 of 4 groups: calcium (1000 mg) + vitamin D3 (200 IU), calcium (1000 mg), cheese (1000 mg calcium), and placebo. Primary outcomes were bone indexes of the hip, spine, and whole body by dual-ene…
Is there an ‘ideal’ diet for patients with NAFLD?
2021
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing epidemic that encompasses three distinct clinical phenotypes: uncomplicated fatty liver, non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH) and NASH-related cirrhosis with its complications, including hepatocellular carcinoma. To date, no pharmacological treatments have been approved and lifestyle modifications including reduced caloric intake targeting a 7-10% weight loss from baseline assessment represent the standard approach. Mediterranean Diet has been recommended as the best dietary pattern since it is easy to follow and, independently of caloric intake its nutritional components have beneficial metabolic effects that not only improve steatosi…
