The sequences of the genes coding for a hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein from two varieties of maize (Zea mays, Ac1503 and W22), a teosinte (Zea diploperennis) and sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) have been obtained and compared. Distinct patterns of variability have been observed along their sequences. The 500 bp region immediately upstream of the TATA box is highly conserved in the Zea species and contains stretches of sequences also found in the sorghum gene. Further upstream, significant rearrangements are observed, even between the two maize varieties. Abstract A fast and reliable two-step method has been established for the chemical synthesis of 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate, 6-thioguanosine 5′-diphosphate and 6-thioguanosine 5′-triphosphate starting from the ribonucleoside. In the first step, 6-thioguanosine dissolved in triethyl phosphate, at high yield reacts with phosphorus oxide trichloride to 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate which is purified by anion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex using a step gradient of hydrochloric acid. Magnetic nanoparticles between electrodes of tunnel junction: anomalous tunnel conductance

Abstract Magnetic particles of microscopic size can be created in the process of Ni, Fe and Co mechanically controllable break junctions fabrication and trapped between the electrodes by magnetic dipole forces. Tunneling between the protruding nanoparticle and the sample electrode shows clear distinctions from the usual junctions: heavy deviation of the current–distance I(z) dependence from the expected exponential behavior at electrode separations z below 4.0– 4.5 A and on numerous occasions a sudden jump-like decrease of the tunnel current at z≈1.5– 2.0 A . Possible mechanisms behind observed anomalies including the short-range magnetic exchange coupling are discussed.

In 1959, UNESCO published a film catalogue titled Orient. A Survey of Films Produced in Countries of Arab and Asian Culture to familiarise Western audiences with Eastern cultures. Out of the 139 feature films included in the catalogue, 37 were Japanese. Through a discussion of the descriptions of the films provided in the catalogue, this article analyses Japan’s post-war cultural diplomacy in the context of the Orient project. The aim is to discuss the question of what purpose the Japanese films chosen for the Orient catalogue served in terms of cultural diplomacy.
