Size dependence of magnetic domain patterns in exchange-biased Permalloy/NiO microstructures

2002

The magnetic domain structure in Permalloy (Ni81Fe19) micropatterns (10?100??m) on NiO has been investigated by means of soft x-ray photoemission electron microscopy. The exchange anisotropy between the Ni81Fe19 patterns and the NiO layer results in the formation of complex domain structures which markedly differ from the simple Landau?Lifshitz configurations. The domain structures reflect the competition between the exchange anisotropy and the dipole?dipole interaction in a weakly coupled system. The observed domain structures change with the feature size, as the domain patterns lose complexity in the smaller structures.

Aktivität Eiweiss spaltender Enzyme in Fischen

1958

Fresh tissues from sea fishes show much higher activities of cathepsins than the corresponding mammalian tissues. The significance of these findings is discussed. There is no indication for the presence in fresh extracts of fish muscle of either proteinases with a pH optimum near neutrality or of decarboxylases for glutamic and aspartic acids. The activities of glycylglycine dipeptidase in fish muscle are found to be at the upper limit of the values obtained by other workers with mammalian tissues.

Educational Interventions on Pregnancy Vaccinations during Childbirth Classes Improves Vaccine Coverages among Pregnant Women in Palermo’s Province

2021

Maternal immunization is considered the best intervention in order to prevent influenza infection of pregnant women and influenza and pertussis infection of newborns. Despite the existing recommendations, vaccination coverage rates in Italy remain very low. Starting from August 2018, maternal immunization against influenza and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis were strongly recommended by the Italian Ministry of Health. We conducted a cross sectional study to estimate the effectiveness of an educational intervention, conducted during childbirth classes in three general hospitals in the Palermo metropolitan area, Italy, on vaccination adherence during pregnancy. To this end, a questionnaire on kn…

Multidimensional Frailty and Vaccinations in Older People: A Cross-Sectional Study

2022

It is known that influenza, herpes zoster, pneumococcal and pertussis infections may increase morbidity and mortality in older people. Vaccinations against these pathogens are effective in older adults. Frailty seems to be an important determinant of vaccination rates, yet data supporting this association are still missing. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of four recommended vaccinations (influenza, herpes zoster, pneumococcal and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis) and the association with multidimensional frailty assessed using a self-reported comprehensive geriatric assessment tool, i.e., the multidimensional prognostic index (SELFY-MPI). Older participants visiting the outpa…

Adenylate storage, metabolism and utilization in coelomic cells of the polychaeteNereis virens (Annelida, polychaeta)

1996

Eleocytes are specialized coelomic cells in nereid annelids which assume a central role during germ cell development. They may contain extremely high concentrations of both adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and adenosine diphosphate (ADP) (each >10 μmol/ml of cell vol.), whereas the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content is comparatively low (0.8 μmol/ml cell vol.).31P nuclear magnetic, resonance (NMR) studies of living eleocytes suggest the compartmentalization of both AMP and ADP in the large acidic vacuole characteristic for this cell type. Eleocytes are thus capable of storing high concentrations of ADP and AMP without inhibiting energy metabolism, by sequestering these compounds in a separat…

Thermische Denaturierung von Kaltblüter-Enzymproteinen

1960

The temperature, which leads to 50% reduction of catalytic activity by heat denaturation, has been determined for 8 different enzymes from cod muscle, as being in the range between 30 and 52°C. Therefore, there are no indications of a generally different heat resistance of enzymes from cold-blooded animals as compared with those from warm-blooded animals. The same conclusion is derived from calculations ofQ10-values, measured between +37 and − 37°C for cathepsin and glycylglycine dipeptidase.

Evidence that ATP or a related purine is an excitatory neurotransmitter in the longitudinal muscle of mouse distal colon

2007

Background and purpose: This study analysed the contribution of the purinergic system to enteric neurotransmission in the longitudinal muscle of mouse distal colon. Experimental approach: Motor responses to exogenous ATP and to nerve stimulation in vitro were assessed as changes in isometric tension. Key results: ATP induced a concentration-dependent contraction, reduced by 4-[[4-formyl-5-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-[(phosphonooxy)methyl]-2-pyridinyl]azo]-1,3-benzene disulphonic acid (PPADS), suramin, P2Y purinoreceptor desensitisation with adenosine 5’-O-2-thiodiphosphate (ADPβS), and atropine, but unaffected by P2X purinoceptor desensitisation with α,β-methylene ATP (α,β-meATP) and by 2,2-dimethyl…

Dipolar superferromagnetism in monolayer nanostripes of Fe(110) on vicinal W(110) surfaces

1998

By epitaxial growth of Fe on a vicinal W~110! substrate, densely spaced and continuous monolayer stripes of Fe~110! were prepared, directed along @001#. They exhibit a sharp phase transition to ferromagnetic order, free from relaxations. The magnetic easy axis is in the plane, but along @110# that means across the stripes. This cross magnetization induces ferromagnetic dipolar coupling between the spin blocks in adjacent stripes, which are preformed by exchange interactions. The resulting superferromagnetic phase transition is therefore driven by dipolar interactions. @S0163-1829~98!52002-4#

Pressure effect on the magnetism of layered copper(II) compounds with interlayer spacing up to 40.7 Å: Nature of the magnetic ordering

2002

The influence of pressure on the structure and magnetic properties of the layered hybrid compounds Cu 2 (OH) 3 (n-C m H 2 m + 1 CO 2 ), zH 2 O is investigated for m = 10 and 12. It is shown that the distance between magnetic copper(II) layers, up to 40.7 A, is not significantly modified and that the temperature of the ferromagnetic ordering decreases linearly with pressure increase. We present a new analysis of the susceptibility data, based on the scaling theory of phase transitions, which clearly shows up a crossover from a high-temperature two-dimensional (2D) behavior to a 3D regime at about 30 K, around 10 K above the long-range ordering temperature. A model of quantum ferromagnetic la…
