The g-factor of the Electron Bound in Hydrogen-like Ions

1999

The experimental determination of the magnetic moment (g-factor) of the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions represents a clean test of Quantum Electrodynamics, because it is not very sensitive to nuclear structure effects. Experimental data on the g-factor of the bound electron are available only for the hydrogen atom and the 4He+-ion. In this paper we present the first result for the g-factor of hydrogen-like carbon (12C5+). The experimental accuracy is high enough to verify the relativistic contribution to the g-factor on the 10-3 level.

Highly charged ions, quantum-electrodynamics, and the electron mass

2006

Abstract High precision experiments on the magnetic moment of hydrogen-like ions confined in a Penning trap have provided the most stringent test of bound-state quantum-electrodynamic calculations. Experiments have been performed on single C 5+ and O 7+ ions. These experiments are briefly reviewed and prospects for future improvements and extension to other systems are discussed.

Electrong-factor determinations in Penning traps

2013

The magnetic moment of the electron, expressed by the g-factor in units of the Bohr magneton, is a key quantity in the theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED). Experiments using single particles confined in Penning traps have provided very precise values of the g-factor for the free electron as well as the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions. In this paper the status of these experiments is reviewed. The results allow testing calculations of higher order Feynman diagrams. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results for free and bound particles show no discrepancy within the limits of error, thus representing to date the most sensitive test of QED. Moreover, the g-factor provides a u…

Dynamics of a flexible magnetic chain in a rotating magnetic field.

2004

The model of an elastic magnetic rod is applied for a study of a behavior of the flexible magnetic particle chain in a rotating magnetic field. By numerical simulation it is shown that behavior of a flexible magnetic chain is characterized by the existence of a critical frequency beyond which the dynamics of the rod is periodic with subsequent stages of bending and straightening. The value of the critical frequency found is explained by a simple model. Below the critical frequency the chain is bent and rotates synchronously with a field. It is illustrated that in particular cases the considered model reproduces phenomena observed experimentally and numerically for the magnetic particle chai…

Electromagnetic properties of neutrinos in a medium

1989

We show that, contrary to the situation in the vacuum, a Majorana neutrino can have electric and magnetic dipole moments in a medium. This is because of new contributions, equal for a particle and its antiparticle, that can arise only in a material background. For Dirac neutrinos, these contributions make the magnitudes of the dipole moments of the particle and the antiparticle unequal. We discuss the conditions which give rise to such effects, with particular attention to the role played by the discrete symmetries {ital C}, {ital P}, and {ital T}.

Pion Photoproduction on the Nucleon and Light Nuclei

1994

Photo- and electroproduction of mesons are well suited tools to investigate the structure of hadrons. With the advent of electron accelerators with high current and large duty-factor, new classes of experiments including polarization degrees of freedom have become possible. Such investigations range from threshold production of mesons to detailed studies of nucleon resonances. In addition, there is the large field of meson production and propagation in the nuclear medium.

Study of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon computed from the Adler function

2014

We compute the Adler function on the lattice from vacuum polarization data with twisted boundary conditions using numerical derivatives. The study is based on CLS ensembles with two flavours of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We extrapolate the lattice data for the Adler function to the continuum limit and to the physical pion mass and analyze its dependence on the momentum transfer. We discuss the application of this method to the extraction of the $u,d$ contribution to $a_\mu^{\mathrm{HLO}}$.

The muon magnetic moment

1981

Muon mass and muon magnetic moment are not calculabIe within the theory of Quantum Eiectrodynamics; they rather define the reference acaie in which masses and energies should be determined when muons are used to test QED or to search for anomalous muon coupiings which couid provide the "raison d'@tre" for the muon. Oniy the anomaious part of the muon magnetic moment experimentaily determined with remarkable precision I), can be oaIculated 2~" Theory and experiment agree preciseiy once corrections being appiied for hadronic and weak processes which poiiute the immaculated fieid of QED at high momentum transfers. First observation of trapped high-field seeking ultracold neutron spin states

2011

Ultracold neutrons were stored in a volume, using a magnetic dipole field shutter. Radial confinement was provided by material walls. Low-field seeking neutrons were axially confined above the magnetic field. High-field seeking neutrons are trapped inside the magnetic field. They can systematically shift the measured neutron lifetime to lower values in experiments with magnetic confinement. ISSN:0370-2693 ISSN:0031-9163 ISSN:1873-2445
