Comment on "Highly nonlinear, sign-varying shift of hydrogen spectral lines in dense plasmas".

2004

The shift of hydrogen and hydrogenlike spectral lines in dense plasmas, calculated with the full computer simulation method, in nonquenching, classical path, dipole approximation for plasma-emitter interaction, is equal to zero. In the paper commented on, Escarguel et al., Phys. Rev. E 62, 2667 (2000) the electron concentrations ${N}_{e}$ and the corresponding temperature values T are shown to have been determined incorrectly.

Separation of proton polarizabilities with the beam asymmetry of Compton scattering

2013

We propose to determine the magnetic dipole polarizability of the proton directly from the beam asymmetry of low-energy Compton scattering based on the fact that the leading non-Born contribution to the asymmetry is due to the magnetic polarizability alone; the electric polarizability cancels out. The beam asymmetry thus provides the simplest observable with a clean separation of the magnetic polarizability from the electric one. Introducing polarizabilities in a Lorentz-invariant fashion we compute the higher-order (recoil) effects of polarizabilities on beam asymmetry and show that these effects are most suppressed in forward kinematics. With the prospects of precision Compton experiments…

Lifetime measurements and shape coexistence inDy144

2010

The known level scheme of {sup 144}Dy has been extended and lifetime measurements have been made with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. Reduced transition probabilities and deformations have been determined for four low-lying transitions. These states form part of the first observed band crossing, giving information on the change in nuclear deformation resulting from the rearrangement of h{sub 11/2} protons in the nucleus. Two bands built upon excited 10{sup +} states have been assigned pi(h{sub 11/2}){sup 2} prolate and nu(h{sub 11/2}){sup -2} oblate configurations with tau=12(2)ps and 0.01<tau < or approx. 16ns, respectively. These long lifetimes are reasoned to be a result of sha…

Measurement of isotope shift and hyperfine splitting of190, 191, 193, 197Pb isotopes by collinear laser spectroscopy

1991

We report here on the measurement of isotope shift and hyperfine splitting of190, 191, 193, 197Pb for the 723 nm atomic optical transition. Detailed analysis of the optical data has been done by combining them with the available muonic and electronicx-ray isotope shift data. The magnetic dipole moments and the electric quadrupole moments of the odd isotopes have been extracted from the hyperfine coupling constants of the atomic states involved in the optical transition used.

The Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov Sum Rule

1994

The Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov (DHG) sum rule relates the helicity structure of the photoabsorption cross section to the anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon. It is based on Lorentz and gauge invariance, crossing symmetry, causality and unitarity. A generalized DHG sum rule my be derived for virtual photons. At low momentum transfer this generalized sum rule is saturated by the resonance region, at high momentum transfer it may be expressed by the parton spin distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering. The longitudinal-transverse interference determines the Cottingham sum rule, which is related to the electric and magnetic form factors over the whole range of momentum transfer.

Towards electronic g-factor measurements in medium-heavy hydrogen-like and lithium-like ions

2005

Abstract Measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions with spinless nuclei have proven to be highly sensitive tests of corresponding calculations based on bound-state quantum electrodynamics. Measurements performed on H-like carbon 12C5+ and oxygen 16O7+ together with bound-state QED calculations on the same level of accuracy have achieved sensitivities around 0.25% of the QED bound state contributions to the calculated electronic g-factors of these ions. Currently, a similar experiment on hydrogen-like calcium 40Ca19+, lithium-like calcium 40Ca17+ and other medium-heavy ions is being prepared, which is capable of increasing this sensitivity on t…

Partial-wave analysis of proton Compton scattering data below the pion-production threshold

2018

Low-energy Compton scattering off the proton is used for determination of the proton polarizabilities. However, the present empirical determinations rely heavily on the theoretical description(s) of the experimental cross sections in terms of polarizabilities. The most recent determinations are based on either the fixed-$t$ dispersion relations (DR) or chiral perturbation theory in the single-baryon sector ($\chi$PT). The two approaches obtain rather different results for proton polarizabilities, most notably for $\beta_{M1}$ (magnetic dipole polarizability). We attempt to resolve this discrepancy by performing a partial-wave analysis of the world data on proton Compton scattering below thr…

Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li

1987

Abstract Nuclear spin and magnetic moment of 11Li have been measured by optical pumping of a fast atomic beam. The angular asymmetry of the β-radiation from the polarized nuclei was used to detect the hfs of the 2s 2 S 1 2 −2 p 2 P 1 2 resonance line and the NMR signal cubic LiF crystal lattice. The results I= 3 2 and μI=3.6673(25) n.m. indicate a pure 1p 3 2 state of the valence proton.

Dipole excitations of neutron-proton asymmetric nuclei

2004

Dipole excitations of unstable short-lived nuclei has been investigated experimentally by utilizing the electromagnetic-excitation process with high-energy secondary beams. From an exclusive measurement of the neutron-decay channels, differential cross sections with respect to excitation energy, which are directly related to the photo-absorption cross section and accordingly to the dipole-strength function, have been derived. Light neutron-rich nuclei in the mass range fromA = 11 toA = 23 with mass-over-charge ratios up toA/Z≈ 2.8 have been investigated systematically. Much in contrast to stable nuclei, low-lying dipole excitations well below the giant dipole resonance region have been obse…

On the observability of parity and time reversal violating interactions by trapped ion spectroscopy

1982

The feasibility to measure neutral weak current interactions by spectroscopy on trapped ions is investigated. The sensitivity of the proposed experiment is compared to the sensitivity of similar experiments using atomic gases or beams. It is shown that there is no advantage as far as that part of the interaction is concerned which is a vector in the nucleon current and an axial vector in the electron current. This is mainly due to the relatively low ion density. The circular polarization however depending upon the nuclear spin orientation appears to be proportional to the coherence time, which is three orders of magnitude longer than in ordinary atomic beam resonance experiments. It is poin…
