Analysis of Activity States of Local Neuronal Microcircuits in Mouse Brain

Time series of neuronal activity corresponding to different activity states in mouse brain are analyzed in the time domain and the time-frequency domain. The signals are associated with either a slow wave brain state or a persistent brain state. For both states, characteristic spectral features are identified and a simple detector is proposed that is able to identify the brain state with low latency and high accuracy. In practice, being able to monitor the brain state online and in real time is crucial for improved in vivoexperiments and, ultimately, for a causal understanding of brain dynamics.

Cytochromes are involved in charge-transfer reactions, and many cytochromes contain a transmembrane domain and are part of membrane-localized electron transfer chains. Protoporphyrin IX (heme b) is the first heme product in the tetrapyrrole/heme biosynthesis pathway. In contrast to c-type cytochromes, there is no need for a specialized machinery catalyzing covalent attachment of the heme molecule to a b-type apo-cytochrome, nor is the cofactor further modified, as in a-, d- and o-type cytochromes. The Carnism Inventory: Measuring the ideology of eating animals.

Beliefs surrounding the practice of eating animals are widely held, and have been argued to constitute an ideology named carnism (Joy, 2009). We developed and validated the novel Carnism Inventory to measure two positively related components of carnistic beliefs: carnistic defense and carnistic domination. We anticipated that carnistic defense would legitimate the practice of eating animals, while carnistic domination would support the killing of animals for their meat. Therefore, we investigated redox biomarkers in polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and IgA nephropathy (IGAN). Methods This is a case-control study with three groups: ADPKD (n = 54), IGAN (n = 58) and healthy controls (n = 86). Identification and Characterization of a Single High-Affinity Fatty Acid Binding Site in Human Serum Albumin.

A single high-affinity fatty acid binding site in the important human transport protein serum albumin (HSA) is identified and characterized using an NBD (7-nitrobenz-2-oxa-1,3-diazol-4-yl)-C12 fatty acid. This ligand exhibits a 1:1 binding stoichiometry in its HSA complex with high site-specificity. The complex dissociation constant is determined by titration experiments as well as radioactive equilibrium dialysis. Competition experiments with the known HSA-binding drugs warfarin and ibuprofen confirm the new binding site to be different from Sudlow-sites I and II. Mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-stress-regulated protein exhibiting cytoprotective properties through a poorly understood mechanism in various in vitro and in vivo models of neuronal and non-neuronal damage. Although initially characterized as a secreted neurotrophic factor for midbrain dopamine neurons, MANF has recently gained more interest for its intracellular role in regulating the ER homeostasis, including serving as a cofactor of the chaperone glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78).
