User Psychology: Re-assessing the Boundaries of a Discipline

2010

Currently, efforts of psychologists to improve interactive technology have fragmented and the systemization of scientific knowledge stalled. There is no home for integrative psychological research on computer use. In this programmatic paper, we reassess three meta-scientific issues defining this discipline. As the first step, we pro- pose to extend the subject of study from the analysis of human mind in the interaction to the broader view of human as an intentional user of interactive technology. Hence, the discipline is most aptly called user psychology. Secondly, problem-solving epistemology is advocated as an alternative to the notion from natural sciences that progress in science involv…

Considerations for Using Domain-Specific Modeling in the Analysis Phase of Software Development Process

2002

Recent studies claim that domain-specific modeling may highly increase development productivity in specific well-defined domains. Domain-specific modeling is most often used only in the design phase of software development process, while general-purpose modeling techniques are used in the other phases. Integrating general-purpose modeling techniques with domain-specific modeling might be problematic, which is why in this paper we consider if it is feasible to extend domain-specific modeling to cover analysis phase activities in addition to design phase activities. Essentially, we discuss the different activities in analysis phase and consider whether or not domain-specific techniques can be…

Assessing Field and Laboratory Calibration Protocols for the Diviner 2000 Probe in a Range of Soils with Different Textures

2016

Frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) downhole sensors have been increasingly used for soil moisture field monitoring because they allow measurement, even continuously, along a soil profile. Moreover, they can also be installed with minimal soil disturbance around the access tube. The objectives of the paper were to assess the field and laboratory calibration protocols for a FDR capacitance probe (Diviner 2000) for a range of soils characterized by different particle size distributions and shrink/swell potential and to propose a practical and effective protocol on the basis of undisturbed soil samples, accounting for soil shrinkage/swelling processes characterizing swelling clay soils. The e…

Banking in Spain

2016

This chapter aims to explore recent developments in the Spanish banking industry and the measures adopted in recent years to correct the imbalances that built up during the expansion, in order to give an up-to-date picture of the sector in the international context. To this end, the chapter is divided into four sections. The section following the Introduction examines the importance of the banking sector in the Spanish economy using various indicators of banking penetration. The next section, “Characteristics of the Spanish Banking Sector: Recent Trends”, looks at key features of the banking sector and its evolution in terms of a range of measures, including margins, profitability, efficien…

ASYMMETRY OF SELECTIVE ATTENTION IN HEALTHY SUBJECTS AND PATIENTS WITH CERVICAL FOCAL DYSTONIA

The environment continuously provides a wealth of information through our senses. This poses a major challenge to our brains to effectively process the relevant pieces of information over space and time, involving attentional processes. Attention selects, modulates and sustains focus on information most relevant for behaviour going beyond our limited capacity to process competing options. Voluntary allocation of attention to features, objects, or regions in space is controlled by top-down mechanisms. On the other hand, salient stimuli can automatically attract attention, even though the subject does not have intentions to attend to these stimuli. A key question is how attention is shaped by…

Data repeatability and acquisition techniques for Time-Domain Spectral Induced Polarization

2013

The Time Domain Induced Polarization (TDIP) technique is widely used in applied geophysics, particularly for environmental issues, for instance for delineating landfills or detecting leachate percolation. Because the reliability of IP data remains an issue at the field scale, this paper deals with the factors controlling data quality and compares different arrays and acquisition parameters for optimal collection of data in the field. The first part focuses on repeatability experiments carried out in the former Horlokke landfill (Denmark), in order to infer the degree of which a signal can be reproduced over time. Results show a good repeatability, with on average less than 10% of difference…

Analysis of pattern recognition by man using detection experiments.

1981

This paper addresses the problem of analyzing biological pattern recognition systems. As no complete analysis is possible due to limited observability, the theoretical part of the paper examines some principles of construction for recognition systems. The relations between measurable and characteristic variables of these systems are described. The results of the study are: 1. Human recognition systems can always be described by a model consisting of an analyzer (FA) and a linear classifier. 2. The linearity of the classifier places no limits on the universal validity of the model. The principle of organization of such a system may be put into effect in many different ways. 3. The analyzer f…

Hardening of bio-silica in sponge spicules involves an aging process after its enzymatic polycondensation: evidence for an aquaporin-mediated water a…

2011

Abstract Background Spicules, the siliceous skeletal elements of the siliceous sponges, are synthesized enzymatically via silicatein. The product formed, bio-silica, constitutes their inorganic matrix. It remained unexplored which reactions are involved in molding of the amorphous bio-silica and formation of a solid and rigid biomaterial. Methods Cell and molecular biological techniques have been applied to analyze processes resulting in the hardening of the enzymatically synthesized bio-silica. The demosponge Suberites domuncula has been used for the studies. Results Cell aggregates (primmorphs) from the sponge S . domuncula , grown in the presence of Mn-sulfate, form spicules that compris…
