Buckling and Postbuckling of Stiffened Composite Panels with Cracks and Delaminations by Ritz Approach
2017
A Ritz approach for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling of stiffened composite panels with through-the-thickness cracks and/or delaminations is presented. The structure is modeled as the assembly of plate elements whose behavior is described by the First-order Shear Deformation Theory and von Karman’s geometric nonlinearities. Penalty techniques ensure continuity along the edges of contiguous plate elements and the enforcement of the restraints on the external boundaries. They are also used to avoid interpenetration problems. General symmetric and unsymmetric stacking sequences are considered. A computer code has been developed and used to validate the proposed method, comparing the …
Numerical study of two-dimensional wet foam over a range of shear rates
2017
The shear rheology of two-dimensional foam is investigated over a range of shear rates with the numerical DySMaL model, which features dynamically deformable bubbles. It is found that at low shear rates, the rheological behavior of the system can be characterized by a yield stress power-law constitutive equation that is consistent with experimental findings and can be understood in terms of soft glassy rheology models. At low shear rates, the system rheology is also found to be subject to a scaling law involving the bubble size, the surface tension, and the viscosity of the carrier fluid. At high shear rates, the model produces a dynamic phase transition with a sudden change in the flow pat…
A new design problem in the formulation of a special moment resisting connection device for preventing local buckling
2021
In the present paper an improved formulation devoted to the optimal design problem of a special moment resisting connection device for steel frames is proposed. This innovative device is called a Limited Resistance Plastic Device (LRPD) and it has been recently proposed and patented by some of the authors. It is thought to be preferably located at the extremes of the beam, connecting the beam end cross section with the relevant column. The typical device is a steel element characterized by symmetry with respect to three orthogonal barycentric planes and constituted by a sequence of three portions with abrupt cross section changes. The main novelty of the present proposal is related to the d…
Bonding prediction in friction stir consolidation of aluminum alloys: A preliminary study
2018
Friction Stir Consolidation (FSC) is a solid-state process that results in consolidation of metal powders or chips producing solid billet through severe plastic deformation and the solid-state bonding phenomena. This process can be used both for primary production and for metal scrap recycling. During the FSC process, a rotating die is plunged into a hollow chamber containing the finely divided, unconsolidated material to be processed. In this paper, a FEM numerical model for the prediction of the quality of the consolidated billet is presented. In particular, a dedicated bonding criterion that takes into account the peculiar process mechanics of this innovative technology is proposed.
Friction stir consolidation of aluminum machining chips
2017
Friction stir consolidation (FSC) is a solid-phase manufacturing process that consolidates metal powder, chips, or scraps into solid blocks via severe plastic deformation and solid state welding. It has the potential to be a more economical and âgreenâ process to recycle metal waste. In this study, solid discs were made from AA6061 aluminum alloy machining chips by FSC. The progression of the process was revealed by analyzing the motion of the tool, consolidating force, power history, and macro/microstructure of discs produced from a series of partial consolidation experiments. A bowl-shaped recrystallized zone in the vertical cross-sections of the disc products was observed and conside…
Fuzzy C-Means Inspired Free Form Deformation Technique for Registration
2009
This paper presents a novel method aimed to free form deformation function approximation for purpose of image registration. The method is currently feature-based. The algorithm is inspired to concepts derived from Fuzzy C-means clustering technique such as membership degree and cluster centroids. After algorithm explanation, tests and relative results obtained are presented and discussed. Finally, considerations on future improvements are elucidated.

Welding abilities of UFG metals
2018
Ultrafine Grained (UFG) metals are characterized by an average grain size of <1 μm and mostly high angle grain boundaries. These materials exhibit exceptional improvements in strength, superplastic behaviour and in some cases enhanced biocompatibility. UFG metals barstock can be fabricated effectively by means of Severe Plastic Deformation (SPD) methods. However, the obtained welded joints with similar properties to the base of UFG material are crucial for the production of finished engineering components. Conventional welding methods based on local melting of the joined edges cannot be used due to the UFG microstructure degradation caused by the heat occurrence in the heat affected zone…
Spectroscopy of short-lived radioactive molecules: A sensitive laboratory for new physics
2019
The study of molecular systems provides exceptional opportunities for the exploration of the fundamental laws of nature and for the search for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Measurements of molecules composed of naturally occurring nuclei have provided the most stringent upper bounds to the electron electric dipole moment to date, and offer a route to investigate the violation of fundamental symmetries with unprecedented sensitivity. Radioactive molecules - where one or more of their atoms possesses a radioactive nucleus - can contain heavy and deformed nuclei, offering superior sensitivity for EDM measurements as well as for other symmetry-violating effects. Radium …
