Prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances, immune-related outcomes, and lung function in children from a Spanish birth cohort study.
2019
Background: Prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has been associated with impaired immune and respiratory health during childhood but the evidence is inconsistent and limited for lung function. We studied the association between prenatal PFASs exposure and immune and respiratory health, including lung function, up to age 7 years in the Spanish INMA birth cohort study. Methods: We assessed four PFASs in maternal plasma samples collected during the 1st trimester of pregnancy (years: 2003-2008): perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and perfluorononanoate (PFNA). Mothers reported the occurrence (yes/no) of lower respir…
Balanced difficulty task finder: an adaptive recommendation method for learning tasks based on the concept of state of flow
2020
An adaptive task difficulty assignment method which we reckon as balanced difficulty task finder (BDTF) is proposed in this paper. The aim is to recommend tasks to a learner using a trade-off between skills of the learner and difficulty of the tasks such that the learner experiences a state of flow during the learning. Flow is a mental state that psychologists refer to when someone is completely immersed in an activity. Flow state is a multidisciplinary field of research and has been studied not only in psychology, but also neuroscience, education, sport, and games. The idea behind this paper is to try to achieve a flow state in a similar way as Elo’s chess skill rating (Glickman in Am Ches…
LFA-1 activity state on dendritic cells regulates contact duration with T cells and promotes T-cell priming.
2010
AbstractA key event in the successful induction of adaptive immune responses is the antigen-specific activation of T cells by dendritic cells (DCs). Although LFA-1 (lymphocyte function–associated antigen 1) on T cells is considered to be important for antigen-specific T-cell activation, the role for LFA-1 on DCs remains elusive. Using 2 different approaches to activate LFA-1 on DCs, either by deletion of the αL-integrin cytoplasmic GFFKR sequence or by silencing cytohesin-1–interacting protein, we now provide evidence that DCs are able to make use of active LFA-1 and can thereby control the contact duration with naive T cells. Enhanced duration of DC/T-cell interaction correlates inversely …
Role of IL-4 in delayed type hypersensitivity
1996
SUMMARY IL-4 plays a key role in the contact sensitivity skin reaction. This has several implications. First, the view that contact sensitivity (CS) is only mediated by cells with a Th1 profile of cytokine secretion needs modification, in the light of the essential role of IL-4 at the effector stage. Second, the concept of a single cell involved in the systemic transfer of CS is no longer tenable, as it is known that both αβ and γδ cells are required. Studies with the cell lines (which contain both αβ and a few γδ cells) suggest that this double requirement may involve the action of IL-4 on γδ cells, which bear receptors for IL-4. Finally, the view that T cell lines only transfer CS when in…
Robust delay-dependent H∞ control of uncertain time-delay systems with mixed neutral, discrete, and distributed time-delays and Markovian switching p…
2011
Author's version of an article published in the journal: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/tcsi.2011.2106090 The problem of robust mode-dependent delayed state feedback H ∞ control is investigated for a class of uncertain time-delay systems with Markovian switching parameters and mixed discrete, neutral, and distributed delays. Based on the LyapunovKrasovskii functional theory, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities for the stochastic stability and stabilization of the considered system using some free matrices. The desired control is …
Dynamic Potential of Feedback in Self-Regulated Learning and Motivation of Children with Mathematical Learning Difficulties
2017
The present study was designed to examine the effects of feedback conditions on learning and motivation of children identified with mathematical learning difficulties (MLDs). The performance of 76 fifth grade children on computational math skills and related task motivation was assessed. The groups of children were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions: immediate corrective feedback or delayed conventional feedback on two occasions. Results showed that children performed significantly better when they were provided with the immediate corrective feedback than when they were provided with the delayed conventional feedback. The findings suggest that provision of the immediate co…
Towards saturation of the electron-capture delayed fission probability : The new isotopes 240Es and 236Bk
2017
The new neutron-deficient nuclei 240Es and 236Bk were synthesised at the gas-filled recoil separator RITU. They were identified by their radioactive decay chains starting from 240Es produced in the fusion–evaporation reaction 209Bi(34S,3n)240Es. Half-lives of 6(2) sand 22+13−6swere obtained for 240Es and 236Bk, respectively. Two groups of αparticles with energies Eα=8.19(3) MeVand 8.09(3) MeVwere unambiguously assigned to 240Es. Electron-capture delayed fission branches with probabilities of 0.16(6)and 0.04(2)were measured for 240Es and 236Bk, respectively. These new data show a continuation of the exponential increase of ECDF probabilities in more neutron-deficient isotopes. peerReviewed
Discovery of the new isotopes ²⁴⁰Es and ²³⁶Bk and in-beam spectroscopic studies of ²⁴⁴Cf
2017
The hitherto unknown neutron-deficient nuclei 240Es and 236Bk were synthesised using the fusion-evaporation reaction 209Bi(34S,3n)240Es. The ritu gas-filled recoil separator and the great spectrometer were used in this decay spectroscopic study. The measured electron-capture delayed fission (ECDF) branches in both of the new isotopes complement the experimental data available in the heavier odd-odd Es and Bk isotopes. Furthermore, the ECDF branches show a continuation in the exponential increase of the ECDF probabilities as a function of QEC − Bsf when approaching the proton dripline. In addition, an in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic study of the neutron-deficient isotope 244Cf was made using the fus…
In utero exposure to mixtures of xenoestrogens and child neuropsychological development.
2014
BACKGROUND: To date, no epidemiological studies have explored the impact and persistence of in utero exposure to mixtures of xenoestrogens on the developing brain. We aimed to assess whether the cumulative effect of xenoestrogens in the placenta is associated with altered infant neuropsychological functioning at two and at four years of age, and if associations differ among boys and girls. METHODS: Cumulative prenatal exposure to xenoestrogens was quantified in the placenta using the biomarker Total Effective Xenoestrogen Burden (TEXB-alpha) in 489 participants from the INMA (Childhood and the Environment) Project. TEXB-alpha was split in tertiles to test its association with the mental and…
Multigenerational study of the obesogen effects of bisphenol S after a perinatal exposure in C57BL6/J mice fed a high fat diet.
2021
International audience; Background : Bisphenol S is an endocrine disruptor exhibiting metabolic disturbances, especially following perinatal exposures. To date, no data are available on the obesogen effects of BPS in a mutligenerational issue. Objectives : We investigated obesogen effects of BPS in a multigenerational study by focusing on body weight, adipose tissue and plasma parameters in male and female mice. Methods : Pregnant C57BL6/J mice were exposed to BPS (1.5 μg/kg bw/day ie a human equivalent dose of 0.12 μg/kg bw/day) by drinking water from gestational day 0 to post natal day 21. All offsprings were fed with a high fat diet during 15 weeks. Body weight was monitored weekly and fat…
