Temporomandibular disorders : a case-control study

2012

Objective: To compare the risk factors and clinical manifestations of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) diagnosed according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) (axis I) versus an age and gender matched control group. Study Design: A total of 162 patients explored according to the RDC/TMD (mean age 40.6±18.8 years, range 7-90; 11.1% males and 88.9% females) were compared with 119 controls, measuring differences in TMD risk factors (sleep disturbances, stress, psychoactive medication, parafunctions, loss of posterior support, ligament hyperlaxity) and clinical variables (joint sounds, painful muscle and joint palpation, maximum aperture…

Spontaneous fractures of the mandible concept & treatment strategy

2015

Background Spontaneous fractures of the mandible dispose a surgical challenge in comparisons to fractures caused by trauma due to several complicating factors. Additionally: controversies exist concerning the terminology of the field. Material and Methods We conducted a retrospective study of all patients with mandibular fractures, with exclusion of fractures of the coronoid process and the alveolar process, treated at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark between February 2003 and February 2013. Data collected from the medical records included sex, age, cause of fracture, site of fracture, and treatment. Results We identified 517 patients wi…

Confirming the mechanisms behind cognitive-behavioural therapy effectiveness in chronic pain using structural equation modeling in a sample of patien…

2016

Objective To evaluate whether therapeutic mechanisms assumed to explain the effect of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) concerning temporomandibular symptoms are confirmed by structural equation modelling. Method Patients were randomly assigned to either an experimental group receiving CBT (N = 41) or a standard therapy control group (N = 31). Subjects were assessed before and after intervention using mediator variables hypothesized according to the CBT model, as well as outcome variables and other socio-demographic and clinical measures. Results The results confirm that the effect of treatment on pain intensity was partially mediated by distress, catastrophizing, perceived control, distr…

Post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy. A study of 63 cases.

2010

Introduction. Trigeminal neuropathy is most often secondary to trauma. The present study explores the underlying causes and the factors that influence recovery. Material and methods. A retrospective case study was made involving 63 patients with trigeminal neuropathy of traumatologic origin, subjected to follow-up for at least 12 months. Results. Fifty-four percent of all cases were diagnosed after mandibular third molar surgery. In 37 and 19 patients the sensory defect was located in the territory innervated by the mental and lingual nerve, respectively. Pain was reported in 57% of the cases, and particularly among the older patients. Regarding patient disability, quality of life was not a…

Prevalence and distribution of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts in a Turkish Population

2011

Objective: To determine the relative frequency and distribution of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts in a large Turkish population. Study Design A retrospective survey of jaw cysts was undertaken at the Oral Diagnosis and Radiology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Ondokuz Mayıs University Dental School, Samsun, Turkey. Data were retrieved from clinical files, imaging, and histopathology reports from 2000 to 2008; a total of 12,350 patients were included. In each case, we analyzed age, gender, type and number of cysts, and cyst location. Imaging patterns and pathologies associated with cystic lesions were also determined. Results: The prevalence of odontogenic and nonodontog…

Correlation between oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL) and oral disorders in a Turkish patient population

2008

Objectives: The purpose of the present study is to determine the nature of the complaints that bring patients to our clinic and to what degree these complaints affect their quality of life (QoL). We also aimed to determine any associations between gender, education or harmful habits and each patient?s oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL). Methods: A total of 1090 patients, consisting of 651 females (59.7 %) and 439 males (40.3 %), were included in this study. Of these patients, 220 constituted healthy controls. Two patient-centered outcome measures, the 14 item OHIP-14 and the 16 item OHQoL-UK measures were used. Results: Most of the patients presented with toothache and caries (50.1…

Cross-cultural adaptation of the orthognathic quality of life questionnaire (OQLQ) in a Brazilian sample of patients with dentofacial deformities

2010

Objectives: The aim of this study is to translate into Portuguese-Brazilian language and adapt cross-culturally to the Brazilian population the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ). Study Design: The cross-cultural adaptation process followed six stages which are; (I) initial translation, (II) synthesis of the translation, (III) back translation, (IV) expert committee and (V) test of the prefinal version. For validation process, the OQLQ results were compared with Oral Health Impact Profile Questionnaire (OHIP-49), with the generic SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire and a visual analogue scale. A convenience sample of 25 patients was selected in two Southern Brazilian states o…

Anxiety sensitivity as predictor of pain in patients undergoing restorative dental procedures

2006

Abstract –  Objectives:  The personality disposition to anxiety sensitivity refers to beliefs about negative consequences of bodily arousal. The concept has recently been successfully applied in research on chronic pain conditions. The present study investigated whether anxiety sensitivity interacts with dental fear to increase expected and experienced pain during routine dental treatment. Methods:  Subjects were 97 patients undergoing dental procedures of excavation and filling. Anxiety dispositions were measured by the Anxiety Sensitivity Index and the Dental Anxiety Scale. Expected and experienced pain were assessed by affective and sensory verbal descriptor scales and a numerical rating…

The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio as a marker of recovery status in patients with severe dental infection.

2017

Background The aim of the study was to assess the value of pretreatment neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio and mean platelet volume (MPV) and the correlation between these markers with progression in patients with severe odontogenic infection. Material and Methods A cohort of 100 patients with severe odontogenic infection were divided into 2 groups according to their length of hospital stay. The N/L ratio and MPV was measured in all patients. The correlation in all patients between preoperative fever, preoperative antibiotic doses, postoperative antibiotic doses, total antibiotic doses and hospital stay with N/L ratio and MPV were analyzed. The Youden index was used to identify the optimal c…

Importance of absorbable surgical sutures for the prevention of stitch abscess after surgery in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma

2017

Background To elucidate the significance of absorbable surgical sutures in the occurrence of stitch abscess after surgery in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Material and Methods The subjects were 251 patients who underwent excision and/or reconstruction and/or neck dissection for oral SCC using absorbable surgical sutures. Detection rates and characteristics of patients with stitch abscess were retrospectively evaluated by comparing between our present and previous data. Results There was only one stitch abscess among the 251 patients. A significant difference in the incidence of stitch abscess was found between the present data and our previous data. Of course, no signifi…
