Evaluating Dance Consumption through the Experiential Value Approach

2018

Purpose – The experiential paradigm has been confirmed as a valuable means to explore and understand people’s consumption of cultural services, thus drawing an increasing interest in the marketing and consumer behavior literature. In this context, consumers’ behavioral decisions are considered not as merely functional but also strongly influenced by emotional dimensions and intrinsic aspects. As consumption of arts is strongly associated with feelings, the experiential approach is a valuable lens for exploring and understanding individuals who consume cultural services. This paper therefore adopts the experiential approach to assess dance as a consumption experience, which is meant to be in…

Which Is Which? Evaluation of Local Descriptors for Image Matching in Real-World Scenarios

2019

Matching with local image descriptors is a fundamental task in many computer vision applications. This paper describes the WISW contest held within the framework of the CAIP 2019 conference, aimed at benchmarking recent descriptors in challenging planar and non-planar real image matching scenarios. According to the contest results, the descriptors submitted to the competition, most of which based on deep learning, perform significantly better than the current state-of-the-art in image matching. Nonetheless, there is still room for improvement, especially in the case of non-planar scenes.

Spatial and temporal changes of suspended matter in relation to wind and vegetation cover in a mediterranean shallow coastal environment

1999

Seasonal and spatial changes in seston, (POC), particulate organic carbon, (PON) particulate organic nitrogen and chlorophyll-a concentrations were studied on a monthly basis in a Mediterranean shallow coastal area (Stagnone di Marsala, Western Sicily) in order to gather information on factors controlling particulate organic matter distribution and composition. Seston concentration and composition were connected to the main physicochemical and biological driving factors, such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, wind-speed and biomass of submerged vegetation. The Stagnone di Marsala is characterized by high temperatures with strong seasonality (range: 11-28°C), while values ranged fr…

DesMol2, an Effective Tool for the Construction of Molecular Libraries and Its Application to QSAR Using Molecular Topology

2019

A web application, DesMol2, which offers two main functionalities, is presented: the construction of molecular libraries and the calculation of topological indices. These functionalities are explained through a practical example of research of active molecules to the formylpeptide receptor (FPR), a receptor associated with chronic inflammation in systemic amyloidosis and Alzheimer&rsquo

Pluriannual morphological variability in a highly productive Mediterranean reservoir (Lake Arancio, southwestern Sicily)

2007

The progressive decrease in water quality experienced by the Mediterranean, nutrient rich reservoir, Lake Arancio (Southwestern Sicily, Italy), has been accompanied by modifications in both phytoplankton shape and size. Since nutrient concentrations are always far from being limiting, in the present paper attention was focussed on the effects exerted by physical constraints (e.g., mixing, light availability) on the morphological variation observed in phytoplankton. The surface-volume ratio and its product with the maximal linear dimension were chosen as morphological descriptors to trace the trajectories followed by the dominant morphotypes in Lake Arancio. One of these descriptors was comp…

Introduction to molecular topology: basic concepts and application to drug design.

2012

In this review it is dealt the use of molecular topology (MT) in the selection and design of new drugs. After an introduction of the actual methods used for drug design, the basic concepts of MT are defined, including examples of calculation of topological indices, which are numerical descriptors of molecular structures. The goal is making this calculation familiar to the potential students and allowing a straightforward comprehension of the topic. Finally, the achievements obtained in this field are detailed, so that the reader can figure out the great interest of this approach.

A Quantitative Model for Alkane Nucleophilicity Based on C−H Bond Structural/Topological Descriptors

2020

A first quantitative model for calculating the nucleophilicity of alkanes is described. A statistical treatment was applied to the analysis of the reactivity of 29 different alkane C−H bonds towards in situ generated metal carbene electrophiles. The correlation of the recently reported experimental reactivity with two different sets of descriptors comprising a total of 86 parameters was studied, resulting in the quantitative descriptor‐based alkane nucleophilicity (QDEAN) model. This model consists of an equation with only six structural/topological descriptors, and reproduces the relative reactivity of the alkane C−H bonds. This reactivity can be calculated from parameters emerging from th…

Shape matching, shape retrieval

2016

This thesis concerns shape matching and shape retrieval. It describes four contributions to thisdomain. The first is an improvement of the k-means method, in order to find the best partition ofvoxels inside a given shape ; these best partitions permit to match shapes using an optimal matchingin a bipartite graph. The second contribution is the fusion of two descriptors, one local, the otherglobal, with the product rule. The third contribution considers the complete graph, the vertices ofwhich are the shapes in the database and the query. Edges are labelled with several distances, one per descriptor. Then the method computes, with linear programming, the convex combinationof distances which m…

Development of Sicilian bean core collection using morphological descriptors

2018

Different species and varieties of bean, spread in Sicily, are representative of local agricultural practices, as result of a careful exploration. Many landraces have become obsolete due to the spread of commercial varieties, but are still cultivated in small areas of Nebrodi Mountains (ME-Italy) and are endangered. The Sicilian bean landraces are often poorly known but represent a genetic heritage to be preserve and to enhance. The ex situ conservation of Sicilian bean landraces was carried out in “Living Plants Germplasm Bank” of Ucria (ME-Italy), founded by the Nebrodi Regional Park, and in “Sicilian Plant Germplasm Repository” of STEBICEF Department - University of Palermo. Within ex si…
