We evaluated the use of piezoelectric surgery (Piezosurgery; Mectron Medical Technology; Carasco, Genoa, Italy) as a means of avoiding some complications of osteotomy and osteoplasty in otologic surgery, particularly in classic canal-wall-up mastoidectomy. Piezoelectric surgery is a recently developed system for cutting bone with microvibrations created by the piezoelectric effect. This effect occurs when an electric current is passed through certain ceramics and crystals, causing them to oscillate at ultrasonic frequencies. We have compiled a comprehensive QST protocol as part of the German Research Network on Neuropathic Pain (DFNS) using well established tests for nearly all aspects of somatosensation. This protocol encompasses thermal as well as mechanical testing procedures. Our rationale was to test for patterns of sensory loss (small and large nerve fiber functions) or gain (hyperalgesia, allodynia, hyperpathia), and to assess both cutaneous and deep pain sensitivity. The purpose of this study was investigate tendon displacement patterns in non-surgically treated patients 14 months after acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) and to classify patients into groups based on their Achilles tendon (AT) displacement patterns. Twenty patients were tested. Sagittal images of AT were acquired using B-mode ultrasonography during ramp contractions at a torque level corresponding to 30% of the maximal isometric plantarflexion torque of the uninjured limb. PURPOSE To compare visual and optical quality of the Crystalens HD intraocular lens (IOL) with that of a monofocal IOL. METHODS The wavefront aberration patterns of the monocular Akreos Adapt AO IOL and the single-optic accommodating Crystalens HD IOL were measured in a model eye. The Crystalens IOL was measured in its nonaccommodative state and then, after flexing the haptic to produce 1.4 mm of movement, in its accommodative state. STUDY DESIGN: Intervention study on healthy human subjects. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether reflex activation of the back muscles is influenced by muscle fatigue or soft tissue creep in the spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Reflex contraction of the back muscles normally acts to limit spinal flexion, and hence protect the underlying spine from injury. California Psychotherapy Alliance Scale-Group (CALPAS-G) data were collected from 1,138 group sessions attended by 248 group members in 16 counseling groups. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) was used to derive between-groups, between-member, and between-session variance components and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for the 12 CALPAS-G items. Using Ledermann and Kenny's (2012) descriptions of variable types, we examined differences in between-groups variance for the 6 CALPAS-G items classified as "Individual" items and the 6 CALPAS-G items classified as "Group" items.
