Practices in research, surveillance and control of neglected tropical diseases by One Health approaches: A survey targeting scientists from French-sp…
2021
One health (OH) approaches have increasingly been used in the last decade in the fight against zoonotic neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). However, descriptions of such collaborations between the human, animal and environmental health sectors are still limited for French-speaking tropical countries. The objective of the current survey was to explore the diversity of OH experiences applied to research, surveillance and control of NTDs by scientists from French-speaking countries, and discuss their constraints and benefits. Six zoonotic NTDs were targeted: echinococcoses, trypanosomiases, leishmaniases, rabies, Taenia solium cysticercosis and leptospiroses. Invitations to fill in an online q…
Experiential Learning of Chemistry Concepts Using Virtual Reality Technology
2016
Master's thesis Multimedia and Educational Technology MM500 - University of Agder 2016 Chemistry is a wide subject with many theoretical concepts. These theoretical concepts may be hard to grasp without experimental work. In a school class there are often students who are visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners who need appropriate tools for triggering engagement and active learning. This research discusses how adding student activities and experiments using a Virtual Reality (VR) based solution, can contribute to an enhanced learning experience for students during chemistry class. In order to produce a usable interactive VR based solution, this work followed the Human Centered Design pro…
Robots responding to care needs? : A multitasking care robot pursued for 25 years, available products offer simple entertainment and instrumental ass…
2020
Twenty-five years ago, robotics guru Joseph Engelberger had a mission to motivate research teams all over the world to design the ‘Elderly Care Giver’, a multitasking personal robot assistant for everyday care needs in old age. In this article, we discuss how this vision of omnipotent care robots has influenced the design strategies of care robotics, the development of R&D initiatives and ethics research on use of care robots. Despite the expectations of robots revolutionizing care of older people, the role of robots in human care has remained marginal. The value of world trade in service robots, including care robots, is rather small. We argue that the implementation of robots in care is n…
Aesthetic Appeal and Visual Usability in Four Icon Design Eras
2016
Technological artefacts express time periods in their visual design. Due time, visual culture changes and thus affects the design of pictorial representations in technological products, such as icons in user interfaces. Previous research of temporal aspects in human-computer interaction has been focusing on particular interaction situations, but not on the effects of design eras on user experience. The influence of icon design styles of different eras on aesthetic and usability experiences was studied with the method of primed product comparisons. Affective preferences and their processing times were analysed in order to examine visual usability in terms of semantic distance and aesthetic a…
Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos
2021
Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed, referred to as Stacked Median Restoration plus (SMR+). The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination. This is done by estimating the optical flow between the images, and using it …
Space-Frequency Quantization for Image Compression With Directionlets
2007
The standard separable 2-D wavelet transform (WT) has recently achieved a great success in image processing because it provides a sparse representation of smooth images. However, it fails to efficiently capture 1-D discontinuities, like edges or contours. These features, being elongated and characterized by geometrical regularity along different directions, intersect and generate many large magnitude wavelet coefficients. Since contours are very important elements in the visual perception of images, to provide a good visual quality of compressed images, it is fundamental to preserve good reconstruction of these directional features. In our previous work, we proposed a construction of critic…
Percorsi dell'immaginazione. Giuseppe Vaccaro e i disegni dal fronte
2019
The proposed essay covers the redesign of the graphic notes for a small manual on the “serial” houses. Written by Giuseppe Vaccaro between 1940 and 1942 when he was called to participate in military actions during the second great war. The text, the schemes and the design elaborated by the Bolognese architect not only seem to ‘anticipate’ the housing emergency that would have occurred at the end of the conflict, but also they highlight his imaginative power. Held firm both by knowledge careful of the manuals that from the themes of the existenzminimum.
Assisting immersive virtual reality development with user experience design approach
2017
In our study we explored how to design a biography of a late Finnish artist as a VR experience. We conducted a development process assisted by user experience (UX) design methods, which increased the process efficiency, and resulted in a research prototype. Through previous research and our development process, we identified components affecting the user experience. These components are: Immersion, Presence, Disorientation, Sense of Control, Pleasantness, Exploration and Simulator Sickness. From our user study with 13 participants, we were able to draw implications that relate to these components. While the set of components could be incomplete or subject to change, shows that further resea…
Psychological triggers in video games
2016
Peliteollisuudesta on hyvää vauhtia tulossa liikevaihdoltaan suurin viihdeteollisuuden haara ikinä. Tutkielmassa tuodaan esille erilaisia tapoja joilla saadaan flown ja immersion tunteet her…
Anterolateral thigh perforator flap made by customized 3D-printing fabrication of fixed positioning guide for oromaxillofacial reconstruction:a preli…
2022
Oromaxillofacial carcinomas frequently result in serious tissue defect due to enlarged resection for treating their extensive invasion, which require challenging reconstruction. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced technology which has greatly promoted the progress of craniomaxillofacial reconstructive surgery. This present study aimed to investigate the advantages of anterolateral thigh (ALT) perforator flap manufactured by 3D printing fixed positioning guide template in curing oromaxillofacial defect. Twenty patients with oromaxillofacial defects resulted from severe primary malignant tumors were divided into experimental group assisted by digital technique (n=8) and controlled …
