Enhanced chain dynamics in loop-sorting-systems by means of layout optimization and a kinematic model of the polygon action

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00158-011-0743-7 Poor dynamics owing to polygon action is a known concern in mechanical applications of closed articulated chains. In this paper a kinematic model of the polygon action in large chains of loop-sorting-systems is proposed. Through optimization techniques the chain dynamics is improved by minimizing the polygon action using a parametric model of the track layout as design variables. Three formulations of the kinematic polygon action are tested on an average sized planer tracks layout to find a superior model. Verificati…

An algorithm based on the PPC (Polynomial Parametric Curve) for designing horizontal highway alignments

2015

Criteria for geometric design of highway alignments have been studied in various researches so far, providing new methods, as alternative to traditional approaches. They can be useful for obtaining better solutions, characterized by high performances in terms of motion safety and comfort. In particular, continuous curvature alignments, based on polynomial functions, are highly consistent solutions with users' driving behaviour and vehicle trajectories. Moreover, alignment geometry optimization allows engineers to minimize dynamic effects on drivers with considerable advantages in terms of comfort and safety. This paper carries on the research of a previous study, in which a polynomial param…

Design of a Hybrid Electric Power-Split Transmission for Braking Energy Recovery in a Drilling Rig

2022

Despite the promising potential of the hybrid electric power-split layout, its broader market penetration is prevented by the large number of feasible solutions and the constructive complexity, which overcomplicate the design process. Moreover, due to the lack of relevant literature references, the power-split transmissions design is even more difficult if concerning applications outside the automotive and agricultural sectors. In this paper, a general parametric model already available in the literature to design a single-mode power-split transmission with up to two planetary gear sets and six ordinary gear sets was applied to hybridize an oil drilling rig to recover energy braking during …

Unfair play? Video games as exploitative monetized services: An examination of game patents from a consumer protection perspective

2019

Video games as a consumer product have changed significantly with the advent of in-game purchasing systems (e.g., microtransactions, ‘loot boxes’). This review examines consumer protections related to in-game purchasing by anticipating some of the potential design strategies that might contribute to higher risk consumer behavior. Attention was directed towards the analysis of patents for potential in-game purchasing systems, with 13 identified on Google Patents. The design features were analysed in relation to the consumer rights and guarantees described in the terms of use agreements of the patent assignees. The analysis revealed that some in-game purchasing systems could be characterized …

Data from: Quantitative PCR primer design affects quantification of dsRNA-mediated gene knockdown

2020

RNA interference (RNAi) is a powerful tool for studying functions of candidate genes in both model and non-model organisms and a promising technique for therapeutic applications. Successful application of this technique relies on the accuracy and reliability of methods used to quantify gene knockdown. With the limitation in the availability of antibodies for detecting proteins, quantitative PCR (qPCR) remains the preferred method for quantifying target gene knockdown after dsRNA treatment . We evaluated how qPCR primer binding site and target gene expression levels affect quantification of intact mRNA transcripts following dsRNA-mediated RNAi. The use of primer pairs targeting the mRNA sequ…

Probing a Proactive Home : Challenges in Researching and Designing Everyday Smart Environments

2006

Based on the results of a 3-year interdisciplinary study, this article presents an approach in which proactive information technology was introduced into homes, and discusses the derived design principles from a human-centered perspective. The application of proactive computing in homes will face particularly sensitive conditions, as familiar and reliable household elements remain strongly preferred. Since there is considerable resistance towards the increase of information technology in homes, both the calm system behaviors and the degree of variety in aesthetic designs will play major roles in the acceptance of proactive technology. If proactive technology will be an embedded part of a ho…

Productive Efficiency of Decanters with Short and Variable Dynamic Pressure Cones

2003

Abstract This paper presents the results of experimental trials carried out on third-generation, variable dynamic pressure cone decanters to assess machine performance and adjust the process parameters for optimum extraction yield. The results obtained led to the following conclusions: the regulation of the differential velocity screw/bowl allows a better performance of the decanter at low dilutions of the olive paste; it is possible to obtain high efficiency at a low dilution of the olive paste achieving a higher minor compounds content and the more advanced system of regulation leads to better results according to the variations of the ratio between liquid and solid phases, thus optimisin…

Profit vs morality: how unfair is labor market discrimination? Results from a survey experiment

2019

Using an original survey-experimental protocol, we study the normative acceptability of the trade-off between immoral profit (discrimination) and costly morality (non-discrimination). We test the causal influence of three factors: i) the origin of discrimination, ii) the steepness of the morality/profit trade-off and iii) anti-discriminatory moral injunctions. Contrasting with past experimental and attitudinal studies, we find that a significant minority of respondents believe that labor market discrimination is acceptable when morality results in profit loss. We also find that the three tested factors have significant effects on normative opinions. Respondents are more likely to choose pro…

The role of Artificial intelligence in architectural design: conversation with designer and researchers

2020

The proliferation of data together with the increase of computing power in the last decade has triggered a new interest in artificial intelligence methods. Machine learning and in particular deep learning techniques, inspired by the topological structure of neurons network in brains, are omnipresent in the IT discourse, and generated new enthusiasms and fears in our society. These methods have already shown great effectiveness in fields far from architecture and have long been exploited in software that we use every day. Many computing libraries are available for anyone with some programming skills and allow them to "train" a neural network based on several types of data. The world of archi…
