Effect of head position on refraction in aphakic and phakic silicone-filled eyes.

1997

BACKGROUND The refraction of the eye is altered significantly after the instillation of silicone oil into the vitreous cavity because of the silicone oil's high refractive index. The degree of the refractive change shows diurnal variation and depends on the patient's head position. PATIENTS AND METHODS To analyze the degree and time course of refractive changes with respect to head position, the authors performed objective refraction in five aphakic and five phakic silicone oil-instilled eyes with attached maculae using an automatic hand-held refractometer. In each patient, 25 measurements were taken at short intervals using a hand-held autorefractometer with the patient in different positi…

ANATOMICAL AND FUNCTIONAL OUTCOMES OF SYMPTOMATIC IDIOPATHIC VITREOMACULAR TRACTION

2016

To describe the natural history of eyes with symptomatic idiopathic vitreomacular traction (VMT).Retrospective multicenter study of 168 eyes with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings consistent with idiopathic VMT. All eyes were graded according to SD-OCT findings. Grade 1 was defined as incomplete cortical vitreous separation with foveal attachment. Grade 2 was defined as Grade 1 plus intraretinal cysts or clefts. Grade 3 was defined as Grade 2 plus a foveal detachment. All patients were followed for at least 6 months. There were 168 patients (51 men) with a mean age of 68.8 ± 10.7 years. Patients were followed for a mean of 22.7 ± 20.1 months. The mean duration of…

On-chip purification via liquid immersion of arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes

2016

Arc-discharge synthesized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (AD-MWNT) have been proven to be of high quality, but their use is very limited due to difficulties in obtaining them in a clean and undamaged form. Here, we present a simple method that purifies raw AD-MWNT material in laboratory scale without damage, and that in principle can be scaled up. The method consists of depositing raw AD-MWNT material on a flat substrate and immersing the substrate slowly in water, whereby the surface tension force of the liquid–substrate contact line selectively sweeps away the larger amorphous carbon debris and leaves relatively clean MWNTs on the substrate. We demonstrate the utility of the method by prepa…

Total retinal detachment caused by a KIF11 mutation.

2017

Purpose This is a case report of bilateral retinal detachment associated with KIF11 mutation. Methods In our university hospital, an 8-week-old patient presented with a potential bilateral congenital cataract, iris atrophy, and iridocorneal contact in the left eye. An examination revealed microcephaly and edema of the dorsa of the feet. The eye examination showed a clear lens in both eyes with a dislodged anterior chamber in the left eye with vessels drawn from the iris to the lens. A retrolental white bilateral mass with vessels was also observed. The MRI and the ultrasound revealed a potential peritoneal hyperplastic glass body. Bilateral retinal detachment was diagnosed during surgery. R…

Anomalous Slowdown of Polymer Detachment Dynamics on Carbon Nanotubes

2019

The "wrapping" of polymer chains on the surface of carbon nanotubes allows one to obtain multifunctional hybrid materials with unique properties for a wide range of applications in biomedicine, electronics, nanocomposites, biosensors, and solar cell technologies. We study by means of molecular dynamics simulations the force-assisted desorption kinetics of a polymer from the surface of a carbon nanotube. We find that, due to the geometric coupling between the adsorbing surface and the conformation of the macromolecule, the process of desorption slows down dramatically upon increasing the windings around the nanotube. This behavior can be rationalized in terms of an overdamped dynamics with a…

Peripapillary Staphyloma and Asymmetric Morning Glory Anomaly

2006

We report a patient with concomitant occurrence of peripapillary staphyloma and morning glory anomaly. The morning glory anomaly presented with an optic nerve head with oblique entrance, located on one side of the peripapillary staphyloma, giving an unusually asymmetric and previously undescribed appearance to the abnormality. The optical coherence tomography provided useful information about the shape and deepness of the peripapillary staphyloma and disclosed a retinal detachment not appreciated ophthalmoscopically.

The role of partners and children for employees' daily recovery

2014

Abstract This multi-source diary study examined the role of partners for employees' daily recovery in a sample of dual-earner couples. We hypothesized that employees' daily psychological detachment from work during the evening should be positively associated with their partners' daily psychological detachment during the evening. Employees' affective well-being (serenity and negative activation) at bedtime should be influenced not only by their own psychological detachment, but also by their partners' psychological detachment. Moreover, we hypothesized that the presence of children in a couple's household should moderate the relations between partners' psychological detachment on the one han…

Being mindful at work and at home

2018

In this daily diary study, we examined the moderating role of employee domain‐specific mindfulness within the stressor–detachment model (Sonnentag & Fritz, 2015, Journal of Organizational Behavior, 36, 72). According to the stressor–detachment model, emotional and quantitative demands should be associated with decreased psychological detachment after work, which in turn is associated with decreased well‐being (i.e., low positive affect and high negative affect) at bedtime. Moreover, we proposed that both mindfulness at work and home should buffer the relations between job demands and psychological detachment and between psychological detachment and well‐being. Sixty‐five employees compl…

The role of partners for employees' recovery during the weekend

2012

Abstract We examined the effects of positive and negative experiences with the partner (absorption in joint activities and conflict with the partner) during the weekend on affective states at the beginning of the following work week and tested whether recovery experiences (psychological detachment, relaxation, and mastery experiences) mediated these effects. In total, 269 university faculty members completed online surveys before and after the weekend. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that absorption in joint activities with the partner predicted recovery experiences during the weekend and increased positive affective states (vigor, joviality, serenity) at the beginning of the foll…
