Time-Domain Integration of Terahertz pulses

We report on the time-domain integration of terahertz pulses obtained via the tight confinement of the radiation in a tapered two-wire waveguide. Both simulation and experimental results prove the time integration capability of this structure.

Raman-induced polarization spectroscopy (RIPS) experiments were conducted at room temperature and pressures below 2 atm in pure N2 and CO2. Both homodyne and optically heterodyne detection were used. Calculations of the signal as a function of the pump–probe delay were performed taking into account the pulse duration of the laser, the rotational dependence of the dephasing rates and the small instantaneous electronic Kerr effect. The observed decay and shape of the rotational quantum beats are in good agreement with the calculations. CNN-based People Detection in Voxel Space using Intensity Measurements and Point Cluster Flattening

In this paper real-time people detection is demonstrated in a relatively large indoor industrial robot cell as well as in an outdoor environment. Six depth sensors mounted at the ceiling are used to generate a merged point cloud of the cell. The merged point cloud is segmented into clusters and flattened into gray-scale 2D images in the xy and xz planes. These images are then used as input to a classifier based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The final output is the 3D position (x,y,z) and bounding box representing the human. AbstractInDrosophila, direction-selective neurons implement a mechanism of motion computation similar to cortical neurons, using contrast-opponent receptive fields with ON and OFF subunits. It is not clear how the presynaptic circuitry of direction-selective neurons in the OFF pathway supports this computation, because all major inputs are OFF-rectified neurons. Here, we reveal the biological substrate for motion computation in the OFF pathway. Abstract The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), a satellite-based cosmic ray and gamma-ray detector, was launched on December 17, 2015, and began its on-orbit operation on December 24, 2015. In this work we document the on-orbit calibration procedures used by DAMPE and report the calibration results of the Plastic Scintillator strip Detector (PSD), the Silicon-Tungsten tracKer-converter (STK), the BGO imaging calorimeter (BGO), and the Neutron Detector (NUD). The results are obtained using Galactic cosmic rays, bright known GeV gamma-ray sources, and charge injection into the front-end electronics of each sub-detector. Removal of streaking artefact in the images of the Pierre Auger Observatory infra-red cameras

In this paper the problem of removing concentric semi-circular stripe artefacts induced by the operating hardware of the infra red cameras of the Pierre Auger Observatory, is tackled. The method builds on top of a recent algorithm for the removal of artefacts, which presents a robust filter, obtained as a combination of Wavelet and Fourier analysis, capable of eliminating horizontal and vertical stripes in images, while trying to preserve structural features and quantitative values of the image. The method requires several parameters which have been tuned by an exhaustive test on a large set of images. The results show that the method is capable to satisfactorily remove the stripe artefacts.

A constraint of real-time implementation of differential motion detection algorithms is the large amount of data to be processed. Full image processing is usually the classical approach for these algorithms: spatial and temporal derivatives are calculated for all pixels in the image despite the fact that the majority of image pixels may not have changed from one frame to the next. This paper formulates the problem of distinguishing changed from unchanged pixels in multitemporal remote sensing images as a minimum enclosing ball (MEB) problem with changed pixels as target class. The definition of the sphere-shaped decision boundary with minimal volume that embraces changed pixels is approached in the context of the support vector formalism adopting a support vector domain description (SVDD) one-class classifier.
