Optical magnification has no benefits on the detection of occlusal caries lesions in permanent molars using different visual scoring systems: An in v…

2020

Background Some studies have addressed the influence of optical magnification on the detection of caries lesions using a visual scoring system. However, there is a lack of research related to the use of the CAST and ADA-CCS visual scoring systems. In addition, the reliability and accuracy of ADA-CCS index in permanent teeth were not studied yet. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the influence of different levels of optical magnification on the detection of occlusal caries lesions in permanent molars using three visual scoring systems. Material and Methods One occlusal site per tooth was analyzed in 120 extracted permanent molars. Two trained examiners inspected the teeth …

Motion Analysis for Dynamic 3D Scene Reconstruction and Understanding

2017

This thesis studies the problem of dynamic scene 3D reconstruction and understanding using a calibrated 2D-3D camera setup mounted on a mobile platform via the analysis of objects' motions. For static scenes, the sought 3D map reconstruction can be obtained by registering the point cloud sequence. However, with dynamic scenes, we require a prior step of moving object elimination, which yields to the motion detection and segmentation problems. We provide solutions for the two practical scenarios, namely the known and unknown camera motion cases, respectively. When camera motion is unknown, our 3D-SSC and 3D-SMR algorithms segment the moving objects by analysing their 3D feature trajectories.…

Accelerating collision detection for large-scale crowd simulation on multi-core and many-core architectures

2013

The computing capabilities of current multi-core and many-core architectures have been used in crowd simulations for both enhancing crowd rendering and simulating continuum crowds. However, improving the scalability of crowd simulation systems by exploiting the inherent parallelism of these architectures is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose different parallelization strategies for the collision check procedure that takes place in agent-based simulations. These strategies are designed for exploiting the parallelism in both multi-core and many-core architectures like graphic processing units (GPUs). As for the many-core implementations, we analyse the bottlenecks of a previous G…

Toward an Integrated System for Surveillance and Behaviour Analysis of Groups and People

2013

Security and INTelligence SYStem is an Italian research project which aims to create an integrated system for the analysis of multi-modal data sources (text, images, video, audio), to assist operators in homeland security applications. Within this project the Scientific Research Unit of the University of Palermo is responsible of the image and video analysis activity. The SRU of Palermo developed a web service based architecture that provides image and video analysis capabilities to the integrated analysis system. The developed architecture uses both state of the art techniques, adapted to cope with the particular problem at hand, and new algorithms to provide the following services: image …

An Easy-to-Use AR Authoring Tool for Industrial Applications

2013

Augmented Reality (AR) applications have been emerged last years as a valuable tool for saving significant costs in maintenance and process control tasks in industry. This trend has been stimulated by the appearance of authoring tools that allow the fast and easy development of AR applications. However, most of current AR authoring tools are actually programming interfaces that are exclusively suitable for programmers, and they do not provide advanced visual effects such as occlusion or object collision detection.

An analytical model to evaluate the radiated power spectrum of a multipactor discharge in a parallel-plate region

2008

This paper is aimed at studying the electromagnetic radiation pattern of a multipactor discharge occurring in a parallel-plate waveguide. The proposed method is based on the Fourier expansion of the multipactor current in terms of time-harmonic currents radiating in the parallel-plate region. Classical radiation theory combined with the frequency domain Green's function of the problem allows the calculation of both the electric and the magnetic radiated fields. A novel analytical formula for the total radiated power of each multipactor harmonic has been derived. This formula is suitable for predicting multipactor with the third-harmonic technique. The proposed formulation has been successfu…

Design, Development and Evaluation of a System for the Detection of Aerial Parts and Measurement of Growth Indices of Bell Pepper Plant Based on Ster…

2022

During the growth of plants, monitoring them brings much benefits to the producers. This monitoring includes the measurement of physical properties, counting plants leaves, detection of plants and separation of them from weeds. All these can be done different techniques, however, the techniques are favorable that are non-destructive because plant is a very sensitive creature that any manipulation can put disorder in its growth or lead to losing leaves or branches. Imaging techniques are of the best solutions for plants growth monitoring and geometric measurements. In this regard, in this project the use of stereo imaging and multispectral data was studied. Active and passive stereo imaging …

Multivariate SPC of a sequencing batch reactor for wastewater treatment

2007

Data from a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operated for enhanced biological phosphorus removal from wastewater have been analysed in order to propose an efficient MSPC scheme of the process. Different multivariate bilinear approaches have been applied and compared in terms of their capabilities for on-line and off-line fault detection and diagnosis. The typical three-way data structure from a batch process was unfolded batch-wise and variable-wise. In the latter case, two models were built: with (AT) and without (WKFH) removing the main non-linear behaviour of the process data. Since the process consists of several stages, the monitoring strategies tested include: one model for all stages a…

Digital Picklock for Video Art Exgesis: Reflections, Conditions and Possible Employment of Distant Viewing to Moving Image Datasets in Visual Arts Sc…

2021

With the advent of digital humanities new expectations and challenges are emerging for institutions harbouring video artworks, specifically in offering access and analytical tools to their archival collections. The paper argues for the possible employment of distant viewing to allow visual arts scholars an unprecedented take on video art, holding together both quantitative comparison and aesthetic considerations. In doing so, the paper addresses the peculiar conditions of video art that need proper consideration for a fruitful employment of distant viewing. Set on the background of the existing platforms for video-art consumption such as UBU Network, JSC Media Centre, and Daata Streaming…
