Electrical characterization of low power CIGSSe photovoltaic modules

2015

This paper presents the electrical characterization of low power CIGSSe photovoltaic (PV) modules. Such investigation is achieved to perform a comparison of their performances with conventional silicon PV modules. For this purpose, a test bench, suitable for the characterization of both traditional and innovative low power modules, has been set-up and experimental results are accurately described and discussed.

Donor/acceptor heterojunction organic solar cells

2017

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have made very good improvements in recent years, reaching power conversion efficiencies above 10% [1]. This have been achieved through chemical synthesis of new organic materials with improved properties and also by new and more or less complex structures such as donor/acceptor (D/A) or bulk heterojunction OSCs. Here we report the results of initial development of OSCs based on the simple D/A heterojunction [2]. Copper phtalocyanine (CuPc) is used as donor organic material, whereas perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and fullerene (C60) as acceptor organic materials. Moreover bathocuproine (BCP) is used as exciton blocking layer. Devices are fabricated by…

An energy analysis of IEEE 802.15.6 scheduled access modes

2010

Body Area Networks (BANs) are an emerging area of wireless personal communications. The IEEE 802.15.6 working group aims to develop a communications standard optimised for low power devices operating on, in or around the human body. IEEE 802.15.6 specifically targets low power medical application areas. The IEEE 802.15.6 draft defines two main channel access modes; contention based and contention free. This paper examines the energy lifetime performance of contention free access and in particular of periodic scheduled allocations. This paper presents an overview of the IEEE 802.15.6 and an analytical model for estimating the device lifetime. The analysis determines the maximum device lifeti…

Automatic image representation and clustering on mobile devices.

2010

In this paper a novel approach for the automatic representation of pictures on mobile devices is proposed. With the wide diffusion of mobile digital image acquisition devices, the need of managing a large number of digital images is quickly increasing. In fact the storage capacity of such devices allow users to store hundreds or even thousands, of pictures that, without a proper organization, become useless. Users may be interested in using (i.e., browsing, saving, printing and so on) a subset of stored data according to some particular picture properties. A content-based description of each picture is needed to perform on-board image indexing. In our work the images are analyzed and descri…

Wearable Multisensor Ring-Shaped Probe for Assessing Stress and Blood Oxygenation: Design and Preliminary Measurements

2023

The increasing interest in innovative solutions for health and physiological monitoring has recently fostered the development of smaller biomedical devices. These devices are capable of recording an increasingly large number of biosignals simultaneously, while maximizing the user’s comfort. In this study, we have designed and realized a novel wearable multisensor ring-shaped probe that enables synchronous, real-time acquisition of photoplethysmographic (PPG) and galvanic skin response (GSR) signals. The device integrates both the PPG and GSR sensors onto a single probe that can be easily placed on the finger, thereby minimizing the device footprint and overall size. The system enables the e…

Symbolic Programming of Distributed Cyber-Physical Systems

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) tightly integrate physical world phenomena and cyber aspects of computational units. The composition of physical, computational and communication systems demands different levels and types of abstraction as well as novel programming methodologies allowing for homogeneous programming, knowledge representation and exchange on heterogeneous devices. Current modeling approaches, frameworks and architectures result fairly inadequate to the task, especially when resource-constrained devices are involved. This work proposes symbolic computation as an effective solution to program resource constrained CPS devices with code maintaining strict ties to high-level specific…

DC4CD

2017

In this article, we present Distributed Computing for Constrained Devices (DC4CD), a novel software architecture that supports symbolic distributed computing on wireless sensor networks. DC4CD integrates the functionalities of a high-level symbolic interpreter, a compiler, and an operating system, and includes networking abstractions to exchange high-level symbolic code among peer devices. Contrarily to other architectures proposed in the literature, DC4CD allows for changes at runtime, even on deployed nodes of both application and system code. Experimental results show that DC4CD is more efficient in terms of memory usage than existing architectures, with which it also compares well in te…

Embedded Biometric Sensor Devices: Design and Implementation on Field Programmable Gate Array

During the research activity in my Ph.D. course, I thoroughly studied the biometric systems and the relevant design and implementation techniques allowing the employment of such systems in embedded devices. I focused my attention on the fingerprint-based recognition and classification systems, and on their implementation on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices. I was prompted to study biometric systems mainly because these systems may play a key role in the new emerging market of mobile devices (for example, they are recently available in the new generation of Apple and Samsung smart phones). Such market is rapidly growing and influencing the way people use network resources and fun…

High-level Programming and Symbolic Reasoning on IoT Resource Constrained Devices

2015

While the vision of Internet of Things (IoT) is rather inspiring, its practical implementation remains challenging. Conventional programming approaches prove unsuitable to provide IoT resource constrained devices with the distributed processing capabilities required to implement intelligent, autonomic, and self-organizing behaviors. In our previous work, we had already proposed an alternative programming methodology for such systems that is characterized by high-level programming and symbolic expressions evaluation, and developed a lightweight middleware to support it. Our approach allows for interactive programming of deployed nodes, and it is based on the simple but effective paradigm of …

WiP: Smart services for an augmented campus

2018

Technological progress in recent years has allowed the design of new intelligent learning systems in smart environments aiming to facilitate users' lives. As a consequence, besides making use of traditional sensors for monitoring the quantities of interest, such systems can also benefit from information obtained from the users' smart devices, which can now be considered as additional sensing tools. In this article, we present the design of a novel system based on the fog computing paradigm that can improve the services offered to users on a smart campus by using different smart devices, i.e., smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, smartcameras and so on. In particular, we will describe a syste…
