Abstract. Global change forces ecosystems to adapt to elevated atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2). We understand that carbonyl sulfide (COS), a trace gas which is involved in building up the stratospheric sulfate aerosol layer, is taken up by vegetation with the same triad of the enzymes which are metabolizing CO2, i.e. ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEP-Co) and carbonic anhydrase (CA). Large interannual variations in the measured growth rate of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) originate primarily from fluctuations in carbon uptake by land ecosystems1–3. It remains uncertain, however, to what extent temperature and water availability control the carbon balance of land ecosystems across spatial and temporal scales3–14. The human body’s intra-and extrapulmonary O2 reserves, i.e. the oxygen stores of the functional residual capacity (FRC) and the blood, will be rapidly depleted during any kind of respiratory arrest (apnea). Application of oxygen prior to iatrogenic apnea (e.g. for endotracheal intubation procedures), therefore, commonly is discussed [e.g. Miller, 1990] as the proposed measure designed to achieve an increase in the human body’s oxygen stores sufficient to avoid hypoxemia. The deeply derived CO2 from tectonically active areas is contributing in a significant proportion, still unquantified in detail, to CO2 Earth degassing. Several studies highlighted how in these tectonically active areas most of the CO2 is dissolved in the groundwaters circulating in the large regional aquifers hosted by the permeable formations of the active orogens. We used (13)CO(2) tracing and source-sink manipulation to determine if fruiting shoots of peach (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) trees are autonomous or if they import carbon from neighboring shoots, and if the degree of shoot autonomy is influenced by the source-sink relationship of the shoot.
