The Value of Local Externalities in Country-of-Origin Clusters: Evidence from China
2019
Business cooperation and the exchange of information and knowledge are actions and decisions that firms can build in order to compete more effectively in globalized markets. These options are even more relevant for SMEs to access and expand in new international markets and through more commitment entry modes as foreign direct investment (FDI). While studies on the role of local externalities are well established in the Economic Geography literature, its international dimension is still unexplored in deep. This is surprising when the survival and growth of the subsidiaries depends on the efficient adjustment with its context. The objective of this paper is to analyse the perceptions of the r…
Functionally Active T Cell Receptor/CD3 Complexes Are Present at the Surface of Cloned Cytotoxic T Cells without Fluorescence-Immunological Detectabi…
1996
The cytotoxic T cell clone 10BK.1 is activated in response to the ovalbumin peptide OVA257-264 in a major histocompatibility complex class I-restricted manner. Following activation 10BK.1 cells proliferate, secrete lymphokines, and kill syn- and allogeneic target cells. Using immunofluorescence analysis we detected CD8, LFA-1, and ICAM-1 on the surface of 10BK.1 cells, but no CD3 or T cell receptor (TCR). In contrast, the proliferative response of 10BK.1 cells to antigen was efficiently blocked by soluble antibodies directed at CD3 epsilon or TCR alpha beta, but not by antibodies directed at TCR gamma delta. In addition, lysis of target cells was blocked by F(ab')2 fragments of antibodies d…
The aim of this investigation wa…

Work engagement among school directors and teachers' behavior at work
2016
The purpose of this paper is to analyze engagement at work among public primary school directors and to investigate the impact of school heads' management style on teachers' behavior at work, in a developing country. Results are based on a specific survey of workflow processes and a representative sample of around 1,000 public primary schools in Madagascar. These surveys gather extremely rare information on several aspects of the staff’s behavior at work and on the tasks performed as part of their workflow. Two-levels models and least square models are used to analyze engagement at work among school directors, and to evaluate the impact of school director's management style on teachers' eng…
Phytosociological characterization of the Juniperus phoenicea L. subsp. turbinata (Guss.) Nyman formations in the Italo-Tyrrhenian Province (Mediterr…
2012
The Juniperus phoenicea subsp. turbinata formations of the Italo-Tyrrhenian biogeographical province (Mediterranean Region), are analyzed on the basis of literature data and unpublished relevés. The floristic-synecological characterization of the identified phytocoenoses, confirmed by multivariate analysis on a synoptic basis, has allowed their breakdown in four different alliances of the order Pistacio lentisci-Rhamnetalia alaterni: 1) Periplocion angustifoliae, with the association Periploco angustifoliae-Juniperetum turbinatae; 2) Juniperion turbinatae, with the associations Junipero turbinatae-Quercetum calliprini, Rusco aculeati-Quercetum calliprini, Phillyreo angustifoliae-Juniperetum…
Globalization and Female Labor Force Participation in Developing Countries: An Empirical (Re-)Assessment
2017
We investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) and trade, as two measures of globalization, on female labor force participation rate in a sample of 80 developing countries over the time period 1980–2005. Contrary to the mainstream view in the literature, which is mainly based on country-case studies or simple cross-country variation, we find that both, FDI and trade have a generally negative impact on female labor force participation. While the impact is of negligible economic size, it is stronger for younger cohorts, possibly reflecting a higher return to education in open economies. We further find a large degree of cross-regional heterogeneity and that the effect of globali…
Foreign Takeovers and Wages: Theory and Evidence from Hungary
2005
This study discriminates FDI technology spillover from learning effects. Whenever learning takes time, our model predicts that foreign investors deduct the economic value of learning from wages of inexperienced workers and add it to experienced ones to prevent them from moving to local competitors. Hence, the national wage bill is unaffected by foreign takeovers. In contrast to learning, technology spillover effects occur whenever a worker with MNE experience contributes more to local firms' than to MNEs' productivity. In this case, experienced MNE workers are hired by local firms and the host country obtains a welfare gain. We investigate empirically wages, productivity, and worker turnove…
Aspects of phosphorus transfer from soils in Europe
2008
Imbalanced nutrient management has caused soil phosphorus (P) to become an environmental rather an agronomic problem in more economically developed countries. This subject has been the topic of numerous journal special issues, conferences, and reviews but we consider yet another review of this subject is necessary with the main target of providing a point of view on non-point transfer from soils and control strategies for an improved environmental management of P. This review considers the causes of the excessive P transfer from soil to surface water in Europe and the scientific knowledge necessary to develop control strategies. There has been an increasing trend towards the P-research inte…
The European Union can afford greater ambition in the conservation of its threatened plants
2021
The importance of Natura 2000 network for the conservation of natural habitats, wild flora and fauna at European level is undeniable. However, it may not have reached its full potential since the loss of biodiversity continues to increase year on year. Further on, a third of the plant species listed in the Habitats Directive to guide the declaration of European Union Natura 2000 network of protected areas is not threatened and there is broad agreement on the need to review and update the species list. Here, the effectiveness of Natura 2000 in the conservation of Spanish bryophytes and vascular plants included in the Habitats Directive Annex II is analysed and compared with the one offered t…
