Visibilidad LGTB en tiempos de “gilets jaunes”

2020

$^{222}$Rn emanation measurements for the XENON1T experiment

2021

The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of utmost importance for the success of low-energy rare event search experiments. Besides radioactive contaminants in the bulk, the emanation of radioactive radon atoms from material surfaces attains increasing relevance in the effort to further reduce the background of such experiments. In this work, we present the $^{222}$Rn emanation measurements performed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Together with the bulk impurity screening campaign, the results enabled us to select the radio-purest construction materials, targeting a $^{222}$Rn activity concentration of 10 $\mu$Bq/kg in 3.2 t of xenon. The knowledge of the distribut…

Kinks and antikinks of buckled graphene: A testing ground for phi^4 field model

2017

Kinks and antikinks of the classical ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ field model are topological solutions connecting its two distinct ground states. Here we establish an analogy between the excitations of a long graphene nanoribbon buckled in the transverse direction and ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ model results. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the dynamics of a buckled graphene nanoribbon with a single kink and with a kink-antikink pair. Several features of the ${\ensuremath{\varphi}}^{4}$ model have been observed including the kink-antikink capture at low energies, kink-antikink reflection at high energies, and a bounce resonance. Our results pave the way towards the …

Unsteady turbulence in plane channel flow

2011

Abstract Direct numerical simulations were conducted for oscillating flow with zero time mean (reciprocating flow) in a plane channel subject to a harmonic forcing term of varying amplitude and frequency. The results confirmed the existence of four flow regimes (laminar, “disturbed laminar”, intermittently turbulent, and fully turbulent) depending on the above parameters. The flow behaviour was found to depend on the complex interplay of mean and turbulence quantities, as described by the closed loop formed by the streamwise Reynolds-averaged momentum equation in conjunction with the exact transport equations for the turbulent (Reynolds) stresses. A crucial role in this loop appeared to be …

Motor strategies and adiabatic invariants: The case of rhythmic motion in parabolic flights

2021

The role of gravity in human motor control is at the same time obvious and difficult to isolate. It can be assessed by performing experiments in variable gravity. We propose that adiabatic invariant theory may be used to reveal nearly-conserved quantities in human voluntary rhythmic motion, an individual being seen as a complex time-dependent dynamical system with bounded motion in phase-space. We study an explicit realization of our proposal: An experiment in which we asked participants to perform $\infty-$ shaped motion of their right arm during a parabolic flight, either at self-selected pace or at a metronome's given pace. Gravity varied between $0$ and $1.8$ $g$ during a parabola. We c…

Hydrodynamic simulation of elliptic flow

1999

We use a hydrodynamic model to study the space-time evolution transverse to the beam direction in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with nonzero impact parameters. We focus on the influence of early pressure on the development of radial and elliptic flow. We show that at high energies elliptic flow is generated only during the initial stages of the expansion while radial flow continues to grow until freeze-out. Quantitative comparisons with SPS data from semiperipheral Pb+Pb collisions suggest the applicability of hydrodynamical concepts already $\approx$ 1 fm/c after impact.

FLUXEN portable equipment for direct X-ray spectra measurements

2004

Abstract The proper use of imaging equipment in radiological units is based on an appropriate knowledge of the physical characteristics of the X-ray beam used. The FLUXEN PROJECT is working on a portable apparatus which, together with dedicated software, is able to perform an exact spectral reconstruction of the radiation produced in diagnostic X-ray tubes. The apparatus characterizes the energy spectrum of radiological tubes and also provides a measurement of the emitted flux. The acquisition system is based on a commercial CZT detector (3×3×2 mm 3 ), produced by AMPTEK, cooled by a Peltier cell, with a high efficiency in the diagnostic X-ray energy range and modified in the shaping electr…

Effect of Acoustic Wave Reflections on Space Charge Measurements with PEA Method

2018

The Pulsed Electro-Acoustic (PEA) method is the most used technique for space charge detection in solid dielectrics. The methodology is largely employed in the field of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission and is based on the detection of acoustic waves generated by charges vibration. One of the most common problems arising during the detection is the presence of multiple reflections taking place due to the presence of means discontinuity in the different PEA cell components. This reflection phenomenon, if not well taken into account, could cause incorrect interpretation of the PEA output signal. It is easy to understand that a simulation model is a basic tool to understand the w…
