Observation of electronic and geometric shell structures of small silver clusters

Singly charged silver clusters Open image in new window in the size range n = 17 to n = 78 have been captured and stored in a Penning trap, size selected and subjected to an electron beam which leads to further ionization as well as dissociation. The resulting abundance spectra of doubly and triply charged clusters show several features: (1) A critical size for the production of doubly charged clusters which can be understood in terms of the decay pathways as previously investigated by collision induced dissociation, (2) an odd-even alternation in the abundance of singly and doubly charged clusters which inverses sign with change of charge state, (3) prominent signals for particular doubly …

Experimental dissociation energies of metal cluster dications and their interpretation in a liquid-drop model with empirical corrections

The dissociation energies of doubly charged silver cluster ions in the size range $9l~nl~25$ are measured by multiple collision induced dissociation. They are compared to the dissociation energies of singly charged clusters. To this end, the latter are used to calculate shell corrections in a macroscopic-microscopic model. Good agreement between the resulting predictions of the dissociation energies of the doubly charged systems and the experimental values is found, which indicates the strong influence of electronic effects on the stability of small silver clusters.

Background Due to the current poaching crisis in Africa, increasing numbers of white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) require opioid immobilisation for medical interventions or management procedures. Alarmingly, the results of both blood gas analysis and pulse oximetry regularly indicate severe hypoxaemia. Yet, the recovery of the animals is uneventful. Thus, neither of the techniques seems to represent the real oxygenation level. Multiconfigurational second-order perturbation study of the decomposition of the radical anion of nitromethane

The doublet potential energy surfaces involved in the decomposition of the nitromethane radical anion (CH(3)NO(2) (-)) have been studied by using the multistate extension of the multiconfigurational second-order perturbation method (MS-CASPT2) in conjunction with large atomic natural orbital-type basis sets. A very low energy barrier is found for the decomposition reaction: CH(3)NO(2) (-)--[CH(3)NO(2)](-)--CH(3)+NO(2) (-). No evidence has been obtained on the existence of an isomerization channel leading to the initial formation of the methylnitrite anion (CH(3)ONO(-)) which, in a subsequent reaction, would yield nitric oxide (NO). The molecular heterogeneity of hemocyanin: Structural and functional properties of the 4×6-meric protein of Upogebia pusilla (Crustacea)

The structural properties of the hemocyanin isolated from the Mediterranean mud shrimp, Upogebia pusilla (Decapoda: Thalassinidea), were investigated. Our intent was to make use of the U. pusilla case to perform a structural comparison between crustacean and chelicerate 4×6-meric hemocyanins. The thalassinidean hemocyanin appears similar in size but different in structural organization compared to the chelicerate 4×6-mer. Ultracentrifuge analyses on the purified protein revealed a sedimentation coefficient of 39S, typical of 4×6 hemocyanins. Observation of ventilation-induced Spo(2) oscillations in pigs: first step to noninvasive detection of cyclic recruitment of atelectasis?

High arterial partial oxygen pressure (Pao(2)) oscillations within the respiratory cycle were described recently in experimental acute lung injury. This phenomenon has been related to cyclic recruitment of atelectasis and varying pulmonary shunt fractions. Noninvasive detection of Spo(2) (oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry) as an indicator of cyclic collapse of atelectasis, instead of recording Pao(2) oscillations, could be of clinical interest in critical care. Reconstitution of vesicular transport to Rab11-positive recycling endosomes in vitro.

Rab GTPases are key regulators of vesicular protein transport in both the endocytic and exocytic pathways. In endocytosis and recycling, Rab11 plays a role in receptor recycling to plasma membrane via the pericentriolar recycling compartment. However, little is known about the molecular requirements and partners that promote transport through Rab11-positive recycling endosomes. Role of glycine-82 as a pivot point during the transition from the inactive to the active form of the yeast Ras2 protein

AbstractRas proteins bind either GDP or GTP with high affinity. However, only the GTP-bound form of the yeast Ras2 protein is able to stimulate adenylyl cyclase. To identify amino acid residues that play a role in the conversion from the GDP-bound to the GTP-bound state of Ras proteins, we have searched for single amino acid substitutions that selectively affected the binding of one of the two nucleotides. We have found that the replacement of glycine-82 of the Ras2 protein by serine resulted in an increased rate of dissociation of Gpp(NH)p, a nonhydrolysable analog of GTP, while the GDP dissociation rate was not significantly modified. The BMED technology can be used for the production or the regeneration of acid and base solutions by water dissociation.
