Removing the barriers to adoption of social OER environments
2015
Despite the opportunities and benefits of OER, research and practice has shown how the OER repositories have a hard time in reaching an active user-base. The opportunities of experience exchange and simple feedback mechanisms of social software have been realized for improving the situation and many are basing or transforming their OER offerings towards socially powered environments. Research on social software has shown how knowledge-sharing barriers in online environments are highly culture and context-specific and require proper investigation. It is crucial to study what challenges might arise in such environments and how to overcome them, ensuring a successful uptake. A large-scale (N =…
Flexible pattern discovery with (extended) disjunctive logic programming
2005
The post-genomic era showed up a wide range of new challenging issues for the areas of knowledge discovery and intelligent information management. Among them, the discovery of complex pattern repetitions in string databases plays an important role, specifically in those contexts where even what are to be considered the interesting pattern classes is unknown. This paper provides a contribution in this precise setting, proposing a novel approach, based on disjunctive logic programming extended with several advanced features, for discovering interesting pattern classes from a given data set.
Multimedia Retrieval by Means of Merge of Results from Textual and Content Based Retrieval Subsystems
2010
The main goal of this paper it is to present our experiments in ImageCLEF 2009 Campaign (photo retrieval task). In 2008 we proved empirically that the Text-based Image Retrieval (TBIR) methods defeats the Content-based Image Retrieval CBIR "quality" of results, so this time we developed several experiments in which the CBIR helps the TBIR. The TBIR System [6] main improvement is the named-entity sub-module. In case of the CBIR system [3] the number of low-level features has been increased from the 68 component used at ImageCLEF 2008 up to 114 components, and only the Mahalanobis distance has been used. We propose an ad-hoc management of the topics delivered, and the generation of XML struct…
1983
Abstract The crystal structure of 2,2,6-trimethyl-1,3-dithia-6-aza-2-stannocane has been determined and refined to R = 0.043. The transannular 1,5-distance Sn ⋯ N = 256.6(6) pm exceeds the respective single bond by 49 pm. A comparison with analogous eight-membered rings exhibits a clear-cut correlation of such differences with angle deformations in the transition tetrahedron to trigonal-bipyramid. The axial distance SnC is 2 pm longer than the equatorial one.
Study of the chemically activated sublimation of ZnSe
1999
Abstract The reactions and processes involved in the growth of ZnSe by chemically activated sublimation in a H 2 atmosphere are studied. The rate of transport as a function of source and substrate temperatures and the difference between them are determined from close spacing vapour transport experiments. According to this process, ZnSe layers are deposited on sapphire substrates by short distance chemically assisted sublimation. The experimental results are analysed and the thermodynamic constants of the transport are determined using a theoretical model for kinetically controlled processes, assuming water to act as sublimation catalyst. A preliminary optical and structural characterisation…
Predicting Social Distancing Intention and Behavior During the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Integrated Social Cognition Model.
2020
Abstract Background Social distancing is a key behavior to minimize COVID-19 infections. Identification of potentially modifiable determinants of social distancing behavior may provide essential evidence to inform social distancing behavioral interventions. Purpose The current study applied an integrated social cognition model to identify the determinants of social distancing behavior, and the processes involved, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods In a prospective correlational survey study, samples of Australian (N = 365) and U.S. (N = 440) residents completed online self-report measures of social cognition constructs (attitude, subjective norm, moral norm, anticipated regret…
Interpersonal difficulties in obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis to inform a rejection sensitivity-based model
2019
Abstract Obesity is associated with difficulties due to stigma and loneliness. These impact negatively on individuals’ quality of life and behaviour change efforts. Increased sensitivity to others’ negative feedback might play a role in the maintenance of these difficulties and could be addressed in psychological interventions. We conducted a systematic review of interpersonal difficulties in individuals with obesity, across the lifespan. We investigated early interpersonal adversity (i.e. frequency of teasing/bullying), perceived interpersonal stress and quality of social life, based on a rejection sensitivity model. The databases PubMed, Web of Knowledge and AGRIS, Embase, Medline and Psy…
Entry in a psychically distant market:
2008
Summary This paper investigates the market entry and entry mode choice of eight small and medium-sized Finnish software firms in the Japanese market. The findings in this study reveal that, despite of the psychic distance between Finland and Japan, most of the firms entered Japan at a very early stage of their internationalization process by using direct entry modes. This was mainly due to the market size, sophisticated industry structure, and requirements for intensive cooperation with the customers during the sales process. The firms were able to overcome psychic distance by hiring local employees and western managers who already had working experience in the Japanese market. This finding…
