Study on the application of CAM techniques on CNC lathes with Y axis and driven tools

Abstract CNC lathes with Y axes and driven tools are machine-tools with complex kinematic. Using CAM techniques to program these machines is a cumbersome process and could easily lead to collisions. Collisions may occur not only between tools and workpiece but also between the mobile elements of the CNC lathe. While CAM software package can identify the first type of collisions, for the second type supplementary measures must be taken. This work presents the build of a kinematic model of such a CNC lathe and how can the CAM techniques be improved by using this model.

AbstractFor Aristotelian scholars, matter is identified as the subject of change, while form is the boundary of matter. Design is a process of bringing about change. From a design perspective, material is what an entity is made from; form is what makes a thing what it is. Based on the principle, “form is the boundary of matter”, this paper proposes a Design by Material method, thereby addressing the knowledge gap of a systematic method for designing according to material. Parametric Hull Design with Rational Bézier Curves and Estimation of Performances

In this paper, a tool able to support the sailing yacht designer during the early stage of the design process has been developed. Cubic Rational Bézier curves have been selected to describe the main curves defining the hull of a sailing yacht. The adopted approach is based upon the definition of a set of parameters, say the length of waterline, the beam of the waterline, canoe body draft and some dimensionless coefficients according to the traditional way of the yacht designer. Construction and validation of a computer-based diagnostic module on average velocity

This article describes the process of building a computer-based diagnostic module concerning the understanding of the average velocity concept. The first step consists of the production of a student model that takes into account student errors and reasoning paths. The computer module formulates its diagnosis by leading users along different patterns foreseen according to the hypothesized student model. Results are reported concerning a correlation analysis between automatic and human diagnoses.

In the last years, the research on metal machining has been focused on the development of tools that can support an increment of the cutting parameters instead of the increment of tool life; this strategy is focused to obtain a relevant productivity increment without getting worse the final product quality. The new design of the tool corner radius has allowed preserving the same product quality due to the “wiper effect” generated during the cut. Decision-making Tool for Moving from 3-axes to 5-axes CNC Machine-tool

Abstract Nowadays most of the parts within machine-building industry are machines on CNC machine-tools. According to their mechanical and kinematic structure, CNC machine-tools can be divided into 3-axes and 5-axes ones. Each type has its advantages and drawbacks and choosing between them could be a very difficult process. This paper presents a decision support tool for aiding the process of selecting between using and/or buying either a 3-axes CNC milling machine or a 5-axes milling machine, based upon fuzzy logic. The tool was built using the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox and the fuzzy graphical user interface (GUI) within Matlab software package.
Dental anatomy portrayed with microscopic volume investigations

The clinical treatment of the root canal of teeth--called endodontics--assumes a precise idea of the spatial arrangement of the anatomy of teeth and their inner structure. By using computer-assisted data acquisition from filmed sequences of histologic serial sections and a special kind of magnetic resonance microscope--the Stray Field Imaging (STRAFI)--volume investigations were carried out using special functions of a newly developed 3D software.
