Neuroendoscopic Technique for the Operative Treatment of Septated Syringomyelia

1992

The management of septated, chambered syringomyelia has until now been problematic because the usual operative methods cannot secure drainage of all chambers of the cavity.

Chronisch thromboembolische pulmonale Hypertonie: Empfehlungen der Kölner Konsensus Konferenz 2016

2016

The 2015 European Guidelines on Pulmonary Hypertension did not cover only pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), but also other significant subgroups of pulmonary hypertension (PH). In June 2016, a Consensus Conference organized by the PH working groups of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK), the German Society of Respiratory Medicine (DGP) and the German Society of Pediatric Cardiology (DGPK) was held in Cologne, Germany to discuss open and controversial issues surrounding the practical implementation of the European Guidelines. Several working groups were initiated, one of which was dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). In ev…

GVHD prophylaxis plus ATLG after myeloablative allogeneic haemopoietic peripheral blood stem-cell transplantation from HLA-identical siblings in pati…

2019

Summary Background We previously showed that human anti-T-lymphocyte globulin (ATLG) plus ciclosporin and methotrexate given to patients with acute leukaemia in remission, having allogeneic haemopoietic stem-cell transplantation with peripheral blood stem cells from an HLA-identical sibling donor after myeloablative conditioning, significantly reduced 2-year chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) incidence and severity, without increasing disease relapse and infections, and improves cGVHD-free and relapse-free survival (cGRFS). The aim of an extended follow-up study was the assessment of long-term outcomes, which are, in this context, scarcely reported in the literature. We report unpubl…

IMPACT OF CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY ON COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE AND DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS

2016

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the impact of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) on cognitive performance in patients with severe carotid disease and depressive symptoms, and to explore the possible associations between certain demographics, clinical characteristics, and cognitive function and depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 48 patients, who were referred for endarterectomy. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scale, while depressive symptoms were assessed using the patient health questionnaire(PHQ-9) scale. An assessment of cognitive and depressive symptoms was performed 1–3 days before surgery, and then six months after. R…

Computing Methods for Composite Clinical Endpoints in Unprotected Left Main Coronary Artery Revascularization

2016

Abstract Objectives The study sought to investigate the impact of different computing methods for composite endpoints other than time-to-event (TTE) statistics in a large, multicenter registry of unprotected left main coronary artery (ULMCA) disease. Background TTE statistics for composite outcome measures used in ULMCA studies consider only the first event, and all the contributory outcomes are handled as if of equal importance. Methods The TTE, Andersen-Gill, win ratio (WR), competing risk, and weighted composite endpoint (WCE) computing methods were applied to ULMCA patients revascularized by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) at 14 interna…

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Associated with Rhinoseptoplasty: A Case-control Study

2018

Objective: To examine the difference between outcomes in the administration of concurrent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), septoplasty (SP), and rhinoplasty (RP) and concurrent ESS and SP in 1 single surgical session. Methods: Patients who underwent concurrent ESS and SP from September 2004 to July 2015 were identified. Furthermore, patients among them who underwent functional primary RP were selected. Subjects who had been administered concurrent ESS, SP, and RP (primary RP) were matched for sex, age, sinonasal surgical procedures for treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis with patients underwent concurrent ESS and SP, used as control subjects. A literature review was performed to find previou…

Prädiktive genetische Untersuchungen: Individualisierung von Diagnostik und Therapie bei Familien mit multipler endokriner Neoplasie Typ II

2008

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE When multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) is suspected, genetic tests are at the centre of screening procedures. It was the aim of this study to compare the diagnostic value of molecular biological investigations with that of conventional biochemical tests. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study cohort consisted of all 144 patients cared for in our department since 1990 with the suspected diagnosis of MEN2 (evidence of a medullary thyroid carcinoma [MTC]), coexistence of two MEN2 tumours or a family history of MEN2. 14 of the 144 patients (from 12 families) were already known to have an hereditary MTC, while the remaining 130 had been referred for further diagnostic i…

Plasma Testosterone Levels and Atherosclerotic Plaque Gene Expression in Men With Advanced Atherosclerosis

2021

Aims: Low plasma testosterone levels have been shown to predict worse outcome in men with severe atherosclerotic disease. We hypothesized that a low plasma testosterone level affects disease risk through changes in gene expression in atherosclerotic plaques. Therefore, we studied plasma testosterone levels in relation to gene expression levels in atherosclerotic plaque tissue of men with advanced atherosclerotic disease. Methods: Plasma testosterone levels were measured in 203 men undergoing carotid endarterectomy. The corresponding atherosclerotic plaque tissue was used for RNA sequencing. First, we assessed how often the androgen receptor gene was expressed in the plaque. Second, correlati…

Ceftolozane/Tazobactam for Treatment of Severe ESBL-Producing

2020

Abstract Background Few data are reported in the literature about the outcome of patients with severe extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) infections treated with ceftolozane/tazobactam (C/T), in empiric or definitive therapy. Methods A multicenter retrospective study was performed in Italy (June 2016–June 2019). Successful clinical outcome was defined as complete resolution of clinical signs/symptoms related to ESBL-E infection and lack of microbiological evidence of infection. The primary end point was to identify predictors of clinical failure of C/T therapy. Results C/T treatment was documented in 153 patients: pneumonia was the most common diagnosis (n = 46…

Measuring the Effects of Sharing Mobile Health Data During Diabetes Consultations: Protocol for a Mixed Method Study

2020

Background There is rising demand for health care’s limited resources. Mobile health (mHealth) could be a solution, especially for those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes. mHealth can increases patients’ options to self-manage their health, improving their health knowledge, engagement, and capacity to contribute to their own care decisions. However, there are few solutions for sharing and presenting patients’ mHealth data with health care providers (HCPs) in a mutually understandable way, which limits the potential of shared decision making. Objective Through a six-month mixed method feasibility study in Norway, we aim to explore the impacts that a system for sharing patient-gathered…
