ENSO IV - Book of Abstracts
2015
The conference addresses questions about the formation, persistence, change and collapse of social-institutional reality; the nature of collective intentionality; the ontogenesis of the capacity for interaction; team reasoning and distributed cognition; collective decision-making; collective responsibility; political power and social change; the role of language in the construction of social and institutional reality; institutional and social normativity; group membership and group identity; the logical and normative structure of cooperation; the psychological and conceptual mechanisms underlying the emergence of social interaction and collective agency; the nature of duties and rights buil…
Biochemical bases for a widespread tolerance of cyanobacteria to the phosphonate herbicide glyphosate
2008
Possible non-target effects of the widely used, non-selective herbicide glyphosate were examined in six cyanobacterial strains, and the basis of their resistance was investigated. All cyanobacteria showed a remarkable tolerance to the herbicide up to millimolar levels. Two of them were found to possess an insensitive form of glyphosate target, the shikimate pathway enzyme 5-enol-pyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase. Four strains were able to use the phosphonate as the only phosphorus source. Low uptake rates were measured only under phosphorus deprivation. Experimental evidence for glyphosate metabolism was also obtained in strains apparently unable to use the phosphonate. Results suggest…
A neutralizing antibody against human DNA polymerase epsilon inhibits cellular but not SV40 DNA replication.
1999
The contribution of human DNA polymerase epsilon to nuclear DNA replication was studied. Antibody K18 that specifically inhibits DNA polymerase activity of human DNA polymerase epsilon in vitro significantly inhibits DNA synthesis both when microinjected into nuclei of exponentially growing human fibroblasts and in isolated HeLa cell nuclei. The capability of this neutralizing antibody to inhibit DNA synthesis in cells is comparable to that of monoclonal antibody SJK-132-20 against DNA polymerase alpha. Contrary to the antibody against DNA polymerase alpha, antibody K18 against DNA polymerase epsilon did not inhibit SV40 DNA replication in vitro. These results indicate that DNA polymerase e…
New Computational Fluid Dynamic Procedure to Estimate Friction and Local Losses in Coextruded Drip Laterals
2007
The design of trickle irrigation systems is crucial to optimize profitability and to warrant high values for the emission uniformity (EU) coefficient. EU depends on variation of the pressure head due to head losses along the lines and elevation changes, as well as the water temperature, and other parameters related to the emitters (manufacturer's coefficient of variation, number of emitters per plants, emitter spacing). Trickle irrigation plants are usually designed using small diameter plastic pipes (polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride). The design problem, therefore, needs to consider head losses along the lines as well as emitter discharge variations due to the manufacturer's variability.…
The role of EPS in the foaming and fouling for a MBR operated in intermittent aeration conditions
2016
Abstract This work investigates the causes of foaming and fouling in an Intermittent Aerated – Membrane BioReactor (IA-MBR) used for wastewater treatment. The experiment was divided into three periods with different aerated regimes expressed with different t aeration /t cycle ratio (Period I: 60 min/180 min, Period II: 80 min/180 min, Period III: 30 min/90 min). The advanced foaming tests used allow the study of the role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) on foaming and fouling. In general, in the Periods I and II, good correlations between the EPSs and the Modified Scum Index without purification (MSI 0 ) and the Foam Power were observed. The results shown that the filamentous mi…
Translation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface proteins from the HBV pregenome and precore RNAs in Semliki Forest virus-driven expression.
2004
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) pregenome RNA (pgRNA) serves as a translation template for the HBV core (HBc) protein and viral polymerase (Pol). HBV precore RNA (pcRNA) directs the synthesis of the precore (preC) protein, a precursor of the hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg). pgRNA and pcRNA were expressed in the Semliki Forest virus (SFV) expression system. Besides the HBc and preC proteins, there was revealed the synthesis of all three forms of HBV surface (HBs) proteins: long (LHBs), middle (MHBs) and short (SHBs), the start codons of which are located more than 1000 nt downstream of the HBc and preC start codons. Moreover, other HBV templates, such as 3′-truncated pgRNA lacking 3′ direct repeat and…

Coibenti per "cappotto" esterno. Valutazione con metodologia LCA
2010
Interleukin-10 and interleukin-18 promoter polymorphisms in an Italian cohort of patients with undifferentiated carcinoma of nasopharyngeal type.
2004
Purpose: Cytokines such as IL-10 and IL-18 seem to be involved in the inflammatory response of undifferentiated carcinoma of nasopharyngeal type (UCNT). The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between functional single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the promoter region of IL-10 and IL-18 genes and the virological and clinical characteristics in a large case series of Caucasian patients suffering from UCNT, a tumor regularly associated with the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). Methods: Eighty-nine patients with histologically confirmed UCNT and 130 healthy donors were included in our study. DNA was examined for the polymorphisms of IL-10 gene at positions –1082, −819, −592 by dire…
