Deformation
2020
In the continuous model of a solid object, which is ideally considered composed of such material points that each one of them is surrounded by a dense neighbourhood fully occupied by other points, the deformation is a variation carried out by a transformation, which does not preserve isometry. Deformations differ from displacements caused by rigid motions. For a closed boundary curve in the three-dimensional space, Plateau wondered what surfaces would minimize the potential surface energy. Deformation was held to underlie the evolution of biological forms, described by the “Cartesian transformations”, or the interpolation function of landmarks covariation over a thin-plate spline, the perce…
Software e design: i media digitali nel quotidiano
2015
Computer, tablet, smartphone are the most important everyday objects in our life because we made experiences by them; they run due to their software: so it is necessary to understand it, his form, his design and his tr…
2015
In this theoretical paper, the claim is defended that phenomenology of perception can be integrated into vision science. Different versions of theoretical and experimental phenomenology are presented to specify a minimal set of commitments. It is claimed that the phenomenological research into perception, be it delivered in the form of conceptual analysis or of experimental research, satisfies the epistemological and methodological substantive features of these commitments. As an empirical case for the contribution that the integration of phenomenology into vision science could bring about, the paper presents a received view in the visual neurosciences and the objections against its element…
Gestalt Theory, Data Decomposition and Functional Architecture in Visual Neuroscience
2013
Attempts to introduce Gestalt theory into the realm of visual neuroscience are discussed on both theoretical and experimental grounds. To define the framework in which these proposals can be defended, this paper outlines the characteristics of a standard model, which qualifies as a received view in the visual neurosciences, and of the research into natural images statistics. The objections to the standard model and the main questions of the natural images research are presented. On these grounds, this paper defends the view that Gestalt psychology and experimental phenomenology provide a contribution to the research into perception by the construction of phenomenological models for an ecolo…
Pensare in maniera inventiva. Saggio introduttivo a Ottica e Pittura di H. von Helmholtz
2023
Experimental Phenomenology in Contemporary pPerception Sciences
2008
A formal role is deemed for experimental phenomenology to be played for a common interdisciplinary framework in perception science to obtain. An systematic account of experimental results on the phenomenology of visual perception and their formalisation in terms of manifold relations is provided. A model for interdisciplinary reserach is suggested with phenomenological explanationa self-closedness traded off against inter-domain research.
Pensieri sull'educazione artistica
2021
In his Thoughts on Art Education, Arnheim describes the perceptual, cognitive and affective components underlying art production and enjoyment. He contends that those components dictate the lines along which educational and teaching plans are to be designed. Since the components underlying art involve the workings of mind as a whole and art is an outstanding instance of the class of structural problems, which arise in many fields, such plans may be intended as curricula that cut across many disciplines. Therefore, Art education gives a meaningful contribution to personality development. This new edition of Arnheim's work the result of an entirely new translation and is characterized by a cr…
Eidetics
2020
The term eidetics denotes the domain of eidetic imagery and its study. The standard phenomenon of eidetic imagery consists in seeing a stimulus that is no longer present, when the experimenter is allowed to infer from subjects’ reports or experimental protocols that “seeing” is different from remembering or experiencing an after-image. After a prolonged period from mid-1930 to about 1960 in which the interest in this phenomenon had died out, research was resumed on the grounds of findings which seemed to point at the ability of extracting information from no longer present stimuli, which showed to be different from sensory and recognition memory. The functional role of eidetic imagery in co…
Line
2020
In the Elements of Geometry, Euclid defines the line as “a length without breadth,” an element without width and depth. The concept of line occurs in propositions, both theorems and proofs, given the postulates that it is possible to draw a straight line between any two points and to extend continuously any line. In Euclid’s Optics, lines are the subject of theorems. Rubin studied the perceptual conditions that could have given an intuitive contribution to the definition of geometrical objects that like in Euclid’s geometry do not occur in experience, yet have a relation with visual constructions. Pictures exploit markings endowed with perceptual linearity and continuity which realize lines…
