Technical and economical assessment of distributed electrochemical storages for load shifting applications: An Italian case study

2016

Time-of-use (TOU) energy cost management involves the use of energy storage systems (ESSs) by customers to reduce their electricity bills. The ESS is charged during off-peak time periods, when electricity energy prices are low, and discharged during times when on-peak energy prices are applied. This article addresses the question whether it is economically viable to install medium-scale distributed ESSs designed to lower the electricity cost for a customer-side application, assuming flexible electricity tariffs. The technical/economical evaluation is carried out referring to lithium-ion (Li-ion), sodium sulfur (NaS) and vanadium redox battery (VRB) technologies, performing a parametric anal…

Assessing the in vitro optical quality of presbyopic solutions based on the axial modulation transfer function.

2016

Purpose To present a metric for assessing the in vitro optical quality of rotationally symmetrical optical elements based on volume calculation under the surface defined by the axial modulation transfer function (MTF). Setting University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain. Design Experimental study. Methods The metric volume under the axial MTF was used to assess the optical quality of 2 rotationally symmetrical multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) within various defocus intervals (0.50 diopter [D], 0.75 D, and 1.00 D) and at various spatial frequency intervals (7.5 cycles per degree [cpd], 15.0 cpd, and 30.0 cpd). Results The far focus of the bifocal IOL yielded higher volume values at all spati…

On the optimal design of multi-stage cascaded transistor amplifiers with noise, gain and mismatch constraints

2007

The problem of evaluating the optimal performances of cascaded, unbalanced, multi-stage transistor amplifiers is addressed. In particular, a theoretically rigorous approach is proposed for the determination of a family of Optimal Design Curves (ODC's) which express the best noise-gain tradeoff that can be achieved - at each frequency and device operating condition - when a simultaneous constraint on amplifier input VSWR is accounted for. Such curves can be used as a more meaningful starting point in practical amplifier design in place of the approximate calculations so far employed for target performance or optimization goals determination.

A Novel Multi-hop Broadcasting Method for VANETs Based on Autonomic Computing Paradigm

2014

One of the three best papers, Selected for the Annals of Telecommunications journal; International audience; Broadcasting is widely used in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) but it is hard to achieve efficiently since it depends on the network density, i.e. may cause network congestion if the protocols are not well designed. This paper introduces a novel Autonomic Dissemination Method (ADM) which delivers messages in accordance with given priority and density levels. The proposed approach is based on two steps: an offline optimization process and an online adaptation to the network characteristics. The aim is to make effective use of radio resources when there are many messages to send imu…

The circulation of practices: Americanizing social relations at the Cornigliano steel plant (Italy), 1948–1960

2010

This article examines the evolution of social relations in the Italian steel mill at Cornigliano, near Genoa, during the 1950s. Built with funding from the Marshall Plan, the mill was the subject of a number of initiatives aimed at establishing a system of industrial relations based on the contractual and consensual ‘American model’. The transfer of industrial equipment and management tools was used by American authorities to put pressure on Italian players to accept the imported model. But these management techniques tended to lose their identity when they were implemented in the local context. The militant interpretation of ‘human relations’ by Italian managers involved in the anti-commun…

Perceived employability: Investigating outcomes among involuntary and voluntary temporary employees compared to permanent employees

2011

PurposeThe purpose of the present study is to examine how perceived employability relates to job exhaustion, psychological symptoms and self‐rated job performance in involuntary and voluntary temporary employees compared to permanent employees.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on a cross‐sectional design using a sample of university teachers and researchers (n=1,014) from two Finnish universities. Of the sample, 40 percent (n=408) are permanent employees, 49 percent (n=495) involuntary and 11 percent (n=111) voluntary temporary employees. Most respondents (54 percent) have education above a Master's degree, the average age is 43 years, and 58 percent are women.FindingsThe result…

Knowledge construction about port performance evaluation: An international literature analysis

2017

Purpose: This study aims to identify and analyze the characteristics of international scientific research that addresses the segment of literature referring to port performance evaluation, in order to identify the existence of a theoretical alignment between the concept of performance evaluation, as an area of knowledge, and the practical application of port performance evaluation. Design/methodology: For the approach to the problem, this paper makes use of qualitative research, analyzing bibliographical portfolio characteristics related to port performance evaluation. An action research strategy was adopted, according to which the authors selected the bibliographical portfolio based on ana…

Influence of clinical and psychological variables upon the oral health-related quality of life in patients with temporomandibular disorders

2017

Background To analyze the association between the OHIP-14 and the different subtypes making up the clinical and psychological axis obtained using the RDC/TMD. Material and Methods 407 patients treated at the TMD unit of the Andalusian Healthcare Service were administered the Spanish version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders questionnaire (RDC/TMD), together with the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). The degree of association between the patients’ score in the OHIP-14 and the clinical and biopsychosocial variables was analyzed through bivariate and multivariate analyses, specifically through linear regression. Results 89.4% of the treated p…

Comparative evaluation of the effect of impression materials and trays on the accuracy of angulated implants impressions

2018

Background Vinyl Polyether Siloxane is a newly introduced impression material and studies on that is scarce. Implant insertion in posterior mandible might be angulated due to anatomical considerations. The purpose of this study was to compare the dimensional and angular accuracy of impressions using full-arch versus sectional tray and Vinyl Polysiloxane versus Vinyl Polyether Siloxane in angulated implants. Material and Methods Four implants were placed in dental areas #19, #21, #28 and #30 of a Kennedy class I mandibular acrylic model with 30° lingual angulation. Twenty sectional and 20 full-arch open trays were made on the primary cast. Impressions were taken using Vinyl Polysiloxane and …
