HSP60 expression during carcinogenesis: a molecular “Proteus” of carcinogenesis?

2005

Sir, I read with much interest the comprehensive review by Ciocca and Calderwood (2005) in which they analyze the diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, and treatment values of a number of Hsps in oncology. Concerning the implications of Hsps in cancer diagnosis in particular, they report that since “Hsps are overexpressed in a wide range of malignant cells and tissues … Hsp detection is not useful in diagnostic immunopathology.” Nevertheless, “Hsp expression levels can help indicate the presence of abnormal changes during the process of carcinogenesis.” The authors support this remark by reference to several papers by our group (Cappello et al 2002–2003, 2003a, 2003b, 2003c) in which we demon…

Genome-Wide Association Study of Diabetic Kidney Disease Highlights Biology Involved in Glomerular Basement Membrane Collagen

2019

BACKGROUND: Although diabetic kidney disease demonstrates both familial clustering and single nucleotide polymorphism heritability, the specific genetic factors influencing risk remain largely unknown.METHODS: To identify genetic variants predisposing to diabetic kidney disease, we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) analyses. Through collaboration with the Diabetes Nephropathy Collaborative Research Initiative, we assembled a large collection of type 1 diabetes cohorts with harmonized diabetic kidney disease phenotypes. We used a spectrum of ten diabetic kidney disease definitions based on albuminuria and renal function.RESULTS: Our GWAS meta-analysis included association result…

There is a relationship between obesity and COVID‐19 but more information is needed

2020

Abstract We read with particular interest your comments in Obesity regarding the Coronavirus‐19 (COVID‐19) epidemic (1) and a related manuscript by Simonnet et al. (2). Resolution of the specific relationship between obesity and COVID‐19, two existing public health epidemics, is critically needed to potentially prevent health systems worldwide from being overburdened. Few studies describing COVID‐19 with rates of obesity exist, and most are based on heterogeneous populations (Table 1) (2‐7). In cohort studies with COVID‐19 disease, obesity rates are generally reported as no higher than population‐based estimates; in contrast, subgroups of critically ill patients (e.g, intensive care unit (I…

Systems Thinking and Sustainability in Organisations

2015

This set of articles arises from a series of conferences (Business Systems Laboratory Symposia, 2013-2015) and in particular from the 2nd Business systems Laboratory International Symposium, Rome 2014 with the theme ‘Systems Thinking for a Sustainable Economy’, concerned with systems thinking and its relations with sustainable management, where the relevance of systems thinking was demonstrated. The current period of our global society is characterised by intense transformations in the competitive logics of organisations, markets, and, generally speaking, society. Social circumstances today are typified by dynamism, connectivity, nonlinearity, and emergent properties — in other words by ‘co…
