Jouer avec les dieux : la katábasis de Rhampsinite dans l’Hadès (Hdt., II, 122)
2016
The second book of Herodotus’ Histories on Egypt tells the story of the katábasis of the wealthy and happy pharaoh Rhampsinitus, who descended into Hades while still alive. In the Underworld the ruler played dice with Demeter: sometimes he won, sometimes he lost. Returning from Hades he brought back a small golden cloth as a gift from the goddess. According to Herodotus, the Egyptians celebrate the return of the king with a festival during which one of the priests is blindfolded and led to the road to the sanctuary of Demeter. From here on he is guided by two wolves that later take him back to the starting point. The elements of this story, and in particular the links between katábasis, kin…
Soknopaiou Nesos project 2019. Il survey 3D e il survey ceramologico
2020
In 2019, in the framework of the Soknopaiou Nesos Project (University of the Salento, Lecce, Italy), two research teams began a multidisciplinary survey atDime es-Seba. One team conducted a 3D survey with a view to generating a digital model of the entire site using Camera Scanner-based techniques while the other undertook a survey in order to obtain knowledge of the spatial and chronological development of the settlement. The survey aims to create a Topographical Atlas which will support the acquisition of evidence for addressing specific archaeological problems concerning the city. The project will also contribute to the protection, conservation and monitoring of the site.
Analysing Revolution-like Processes in North Africa: A Historical Perspective of the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s
2021
The recent Arab Spring (which started in 2010 and is still going on) has been considered the beginning of a transition process for some Arab countries and in particular North African countries. In the last years a bulimic production of books and articles have investigated the Arab Spring by mainly focusing on events from the 2011 onwards and/ or proposing a single narrow-minded perspective. A broader historical comparative approach is needed for investigating and underlining both similarities and differences among the different target countries and their revolutionary and/or revolutionary-like events/processes, by also contributing (and this is the aim of this article) to shed light on “und…
Il canale delle spie. Storia della crisi di Suez
2021
2018
The Banū Abī’l-Ḥusayn or Kalbiti between Palermo and Cairo (x-xi sec.): Notes on a family and political interaction, rereading al-Maqrīzī · This article aims at investigating a crucial issue with regard to thehistory of Islamic Sicily, the Fatimid presence on the island during the 10th and the 11th century, as well as the integration of the largest island – and ṯaġr – in Muslim hands into the network of the Mediterranean relationships, particularly those between Sicily and Egypt, immediately after the Fatimid Caliph imām al-Mu‘izz li dīn Allāh (d. 975) moved to Cairo in 972. Since the subject of Fatimid Sicily has been scarcely explored, I have chosen to deal with the particular relationshi…
Pan- Islamism and Pan- Arabism. Debating Possible Convergences in Responses to Modernity
2022
Pan- Islamism and Pan- Arabism are among the majors’ responses to modernity produced between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the Arabic- Islamic world, promoting a possible alternative to the Western proposals. This article aims to contribute to the effort of framing and analyzing the debate on the birth and evolution of both “theories”, with specific regard to the case of Egypt. In this sense, this article is in line with Gerges’s proposal (as expressed in his last book Making the Arab World) of “ideational fluidity” and tries to contribute to breaking down the established and misleading dichotomy of two monolithic ideologies (Pan- Islamism and Pan- Arabism) having no interaction…
Il salafismo in Egitto tra moderazione e pragmatismo: i casi di al-Nur e Hizb al-Tahrir
2014
This essay focuses on the Egyptian salafism, under the light of the theory of the so-called post-Islamism. Paradoxically after the ousting of the President Muhammad Morsi by the military, salafi parties gained space, supporting the second transition and the amendments of the Constitution drafted by the Muslim Brotherhood. Salafisms bears a traditional interpretation of Islam which is at odd with several aspects of democracy and liberal-constitutionalism. But what does it mean, exactly, to be a salafi? And which are the possible outcomes that the salafi participation in politics could generate? After a brief description of the salafi nebula, this essay focuses on the political behavior of tw…
Il pensiero politico sunnita contemporaneo: Salafismo e islamismo
2017
Our Soils: No Longer Crypto-Resources
2019
We all have to consider the soil as a good for a human society that is continuously changing and in which the boost toward a continuous economic growth and a rapid technological development, coupled with the progressive increase of the information, often causes considerable and unpredictable changes. The achievement of these goals is based on a sound and comprehensive knowledge of the soils of each country. I wish to welcome the book The Soils of Egypt and to congratulate with the authors.
