Are nonlinear model-free conditional entropy approaches for the assessment of cardiac control complexity superior to the linear model-based one?
2016
Objective : We test the hypothesis that the linear model-based (MB) approach for the estimation of conditional entropy (CE) can be utilized to assess the complexity of the cardiac control in healthy individuals. Methods : An MB estimate of CE was tested in an experimental protocol (i.e., the graded head-up tilt) known to produce a gradual decrease of cardiac control complexity as a result of the progressive vagal withdrawal and concomitant sympathetic activation. The MB approach was compared with traditionally exploited nonlinear model-free (MF) techniques such as corrected approximate entropy, sample entropy, corrected CE, two k -nearest-neighbor CE procedures and permutation CE. Adaptive tuning system and parameter estimation of a digitally controlled boost converter with STM32
2019
. This paper proposes a diagnostic system of a power electronic converter, based on a cheap STM32 Nucleo board, aiming to extract some relevant measurements which gives back important values of the converter's parameters behavior. Moreover the designed system is also exploited for implementing the converter's auto tuning in order to optimize its dynamic performance.
Multiscale Granger causality analysis by à trous wavelet transform
2017
Since interactions in neural systems occur across multiple temporal scales, it is likely that information flow will exhibit a multiscale structure, thus requiring a multiscale generalization of classical temporal precedence causality analysis like Granger's approach. However, the computation of multiscale measures of information dynamics is complicated by theoretical and practical issues such as filtering and undersampling: to overcome these problems, we propose a wavelet-based approach for multiscale Granger causality (GC) analysis, which is characterized by the following properties: (i) only the candidate driver variable is wavelet transformed (ii) the decomposition is performed using the…
A Measurement System for Power Inductors in Non-Linear Operating Conditions
2021
The exploitation of power inductors in switching converters outside the linear region requires detailed information on the magnetization curve that often is not included among those usually available on their datasheets. This paper proposes an automatic system in which the inductor is characterized in real operating conditions taking into account also the core temperature. It is based on a switching converter suitably controlled by a virtual instrument. The system was tested by retrieving the inductance vs current curves of two commercial inductors for core temperatures up to 105°C, showing the different behaviors of the magnetization curves. Results are coherent with data given by manufact…
Error mitigation using RaptorQ codes in an experimental indoor free space optical link under the influence of turbulence
2015
In free space optical (FSO) communications, several factors can strongly affect the link quality. Among them, one of the most important impairments that can degrade the FSO link quality and its reliability even under the clear sky conditions consists of optical turbulence. In this work, the authors investigate the generation of both weak and moderate turbulence regimes in an indoor environment to assess the FSO link quality. In particular, they show that, due to the presence of the turbulence, the link experiences both erasure errors and packet losses during transmission, and also compare the experimental statistical distribution of samples with the predicted Gamma Gamma model. Furthermore,…
An Optimization Device for Series Parallel Connected PV Plants
2017
In this paper it is presented a testing prototype of a reconfiguration system for photovoltaic (PV) plants. The system enables to increase the total energy output by reducing the electrical mismatch between the PV array modules. The architecture of the implemented switching matrix, performing the dynamic electrical interconnections of the PV panels, enables to reconfigure nine solar modules in a series-parallel (SP) configuration. The contribution is organized as follows. A brief state of the art is first presented, followed by a comparison between the SP and Total-Cross-Tied (TCT) connections. The prototype then is thoroughly described as well as the main design choices. Finally some tests…
An Information-Theoretic Framework to Measure the Dynamic Interaction between Neural Spike Trains
2021
Understanding the interaction patterns among simultaneous recordings of spike trains from multiple neuronal units is a key topic in neuroscience. However, an optimal approach of assessing these interactions has not been established, as existing methods either do not consider the inherent point process nature of spike trains or are based on parametric assumptions that may lead to wrong inferences if not met. This work presents a framework, grounded in the field of information dynamics, for the model-free, continuous-time estimation of both undirected (symmetric) and directed (causal) interactions between pairs of spike trains. The framework decomposes the overall information exchanged dynami…
Design of a Time Dissemination System Using Chirp Modulation for Medium Voltage Smart Grid Applications
2020
The monitoring and the management of smart grid require an advanced communication infrastructure. The time synchronization is among the most important services such an infrastructure should offer. Several solutions are available to disseminate the time information in a distributed system; for instance, most of the times a global positioning system (GPS) receiver is used to recover accurate time information. However, GPS receivers need a clear view of the sky. Other solutions, like the use of a network-based synchronization mechanism, require a dedicated communication infrastructure, which is not always feasible for economical reason. Thus, the use of the power grid itself to disseminate a t…
MATLAB Co-Simulation Tools for Power Supply Systems Design
2011
ion level. Circuit simulation software as Powersim PSIM and Orcad Pspice are the most common choice for circuit modelling. In (Basso, 2008), the design and simulation of switchmode power supplies is deeply analyzed and simulation tips in several environments are proposed. ASIC simulation and verification tools as Xilinx ISE/Modelsim or Aldec ActiveHDL are available to implement the digital controller by the VHDL or VERILOG source code. Since the interaction between subsystems is the most common source of faults, testing separately analog and digital subsystems by the means of different verification tools is a severe mistake. Matlab is a powerful simulation environment for mixed-mode systems…
Minimally Invasive Assessment of Mental Stress based on Wearable Wireless Physiological Sensors and Multivariate Biosignal Processing
2019
The development of connected health technologies for the continuous monitoring of the psychophysical state of individuals performing daily life activities requires the aggregation of non-intrusive sensors and the availability of methods and algorithms for extracting the relevant physiological information. The present study proposes an integrated approach for the objective assessment of mental stress which combines wirelessly connected low invasive biosensors with multivariate physiological time series analysis. In a group of 18 healthy subjects monitored in a relaxed resting state and during two experimental conditions inducing mental stress and sustained attention (respectively, mental ari…
