Artificial intelligence as an emerging diagnostic approach in paediatric pulmonology.

2020

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the subset of computer science that covers anything related to making machines smart. Along with machine learning (ML), AI encompasses a wide range of approaches and technologies, including knowledge discovery and data mining methodologies, predictive analytics, advanced statistics for pattern recognition and neurocomputing. AI technologies and their expanding applications in diagnostics call for constant updates of knowledge and skills. In this commentary, we outline recent breakthroughs in paediatric pulmonology.

Changes in radiological protection and quality control in Spanish dental installations: 1996-2003.

2008

Introduction: The European Union has established specific directives concerning radiological protection which are obligatory for member States. In addition, all Spanish dental clinics with radiological equipment are required to have an annual quality control check. Objective: To analyze the effect of new European legislation on dental radiological practice in Spain and to determine whether it has resulted in lower doses being administered to patients. Material and Methods: A total of 10,171 official radiological quality control reports on Spanish dental clinics, covering 16 autonomous regions, were studied following the passing of Royal Decree 2071/1995 on quality criteria in radiodiagnosti…

Patterns of Safety Incidents in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

2021

Introduction: Safety incidents preceding manifest adverse events are barely evaluated in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). This study aimed at identifying frequency and patterns of safety incidents in our NICU.Methods: A 6-month prospective clinical study was performed from May to October 2019 in a German 10-bed level III NICU. A voluntary, anonymous reporting system was introduced, and all neonatal team members were invited to complete paper-based questionnaires following each particular safety incident. Safety incidents were defined as safety-related events that were considered by the reporting team member as a “threat to the patient's well-being” which “should ideally not occur agai…

La diagnostica delle malattie infettive: Tra metafora del passato e itinerario nel futuro

1993

A global emergency is threatening mankind, awakening dead ghosts and causing alarm about our present and future: it is the apparently irreversible spread of infectious diseases. This critical and worrying situation should be acknowledged and carefully followed by the radiological profession since all of us – teachers, specialists, professionals – have to deal with imaging diagnostic modalities deriving information from a deceitful and camouflageing anatomo-functional substratum. The increasing spread of infectious diseases is due to a wide range of concomitant factors: HIV infection, drug addiction, migration fenomena and the related opportunistic infections combined with poor hygienic, physi…

Small Bowel Perforations: What the Radiologist Needs to Know

2016

The incidence of small bowel perforation is low but can develop from a variety of causes including Crohn disease, ischemic or bacterial enteritis, diverticulitis, bowel obstruction, volvulus, intussusception, trauma, and ingested foreign bodies. In contrast to gastroduodenal perforation, the amount of extraluminal air in small bowel perforation is small or absent in most cases. This article will illustrate the main aspects of small bowel perforation, focusing on anatomical reasons of radiological findings and in the evaluation of the site of perforation using plain film, ultrasound, and multidetector computed tomography equipments. In particular, the authors highlight the anatomic key notes…

A new method to evaluate the influence of the glenosphere positioning on stability and range of motion of a reverse shoulder prosthesis

2019

Abstract Purpose Shoulder instability and reduced range of motion are two common complications of a total reverse shoulder arthroplasty. In this work, a new approach is proposed to estimate how the glenoid component positioning can influence the stability and the range of motion of a reverse shoulder prosthesis. Materials and methods A standard reverse shoulder prosthesis has been analysed. To perform virtual simulation of the shoulder-prosthesis assembly, all the components of the prosthesis have been acquired via a 3D laser scanner and the solid models of the shoulder bones have been reconstructed through CT images. Loads on the shoulder joint have been estimated using anatomical models d…

Portal Vein Thrombosis Relevance on Liver Cirrhosis: Italian Venous Thrombotic Events Registry

2016

Portal vein thrombosis may occur in cirrhosis; nevertheless, its prevalence, and predictors are still elusive. To investigate this issue, the Italian Society of Internal Medicine undertook the “Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry” (PRO-LIVER). This prospective multicenter study includes consecutive cirrhotic patients undergoing Doppler ultrasound examination of the portal area to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of portal vein thrombosis over a 2-year scheduled follow-up. Seven hundred and fifty-three (68 % men; 64 ± 12 years) patients were included in the present analysis. Fifty percent of the cases were cirrhotic outpatients.…
