Measurement methodology for greenhouse gas emissions from storage of forest chips–A review
2015
Abstract Research on greenhouse gas emission related to solid biofuels has focused mainly on the emissions from end use and the production chain. GHG emissions from the storage of forest chips have not received much attention in recent literature. In order for EU emission reduction targets to be fully understood, emissions from solid biofuel storage needs to be better described. Usually emissions from chip piles have been modelled using studies from organic waste composting but these two materials can differ appreciably; for example the C/N-ratio and moisture content. Herein, previous studies on greenhouse gas emissions from forest chips piles during storage are reviewed. The objective is t…
Full-scale biotrickling filtration of volatile organic compounds from air emission in wood-coating activities
2012
BACKGROUND: Biotrickling filtration could be considered as a suitable and viable technology for controlling the industrial emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in waste gases. In this study, the performance of a full-scale biotrickling system, including a passively activated carbon-smoothing prefilter was investigated for the treatment of exhaust gases from two different paint spray sources at a furniture facility. RESULTS: The VOC profiles were uneven for both sources, but the second source was more irregular, with highly variable VOC loads. The plant was operated at empty bed residence times (EBRTs) between 20 and 100 s. The system was able to control the VOC emissions, so air t…
Leakage radiation microscopy of surface plasmon coupled emission: investigation of gain-assisted propagation in an integrated plasmonic waveguide.
2010
International audience; Using a single-mode dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide doped with quantum dots, we were able to slightly increase the propagation length of the mode by stimulated emission of plasmon. We analyse the amplification phenomenon in the visible range by combining leakage radiation microscopy and surface plasmon coupled emission techniques.
Spray pyrolysis synthesis and characterization of Mg1-xSrxMoO4 heterostructure with white light emission
2020
[EN] Molybdates are inorganic materials with great potential in white phosphors application, being an alternative to traditional lighting sources. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of Mg1-xSrxMoO4 (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1) powders with white light-emitting properties. Using X-ray diffraction, the formation of the monoclinic beta-MgMoO4 phase was observed for x = 0 and the formation of the tetragonal scheelite phase of SrMoO4 was observed for x = 1. The formation of a heterostructure composed of both phases was found for compositions with x = 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75. Scanning and trasmission electron microscopy images showed that the Mg1-xSrxMoO4 particles exhibi…
Searching the most appropriate sample pretreatment for the elemental analysis of wines by inductively coupled plasma-based techniques.
2008
Different sample preparation methods were evaluated for the simultaneous multielement analysis of wine samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Microwave-assisted digestion in closed vessel, thermal digestion in open reactor, and direct sample dilution were considered for the determination of Li, Be, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Y, Mo, Cd, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Tl, Pb, and Bi in 12 samples of red wine from Valencia and Utiel-Requena protected designation of origin. ICP-MS allows the determination of 17 elements in most…
Elemental fingerprint of wines from the protected designation of origin Valencia
2009
Abstract Inductively coupled plasma optical emission (ICP-OES), in combination with different chemometric approaches, has been used to verify the origin of different red wine samples from Utiel-Requena, Jumilla, Yecla and Valencia protected designation of origin (PDO). The ability of multivariate analysis methods, such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA), classification and regression trees (CARTs) and discriminant analysis (DA), to achieve wine classification from their elemental contents has been investigated. The calculations were performed using 38 variables (contents of Al, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe, Gd, Ho, K, La, Li, Lu, Mg,…
INNOVAZIONE DEI MATERIALI NATURALI: TERRA E NANOTUBI DI ARGILLA PER UNA SFIDA SOSTENIBILE
2019
The influence of the momentum coefficient and the number of the averaging points of the power spectrum density on the recognition effectiveness of th…
2006
The subject matter of this paper refers to the next stage of the research work connected with the improvement of the acoustic emission method (AE) used for the evaluation of partial discharges (PDs) generated in paper-oil insulation systems of high-voltage power appliances. The subject matter discussed here refers to one of the aspects of the analysis of the signals registered - a correct and effective recognition of the AE signals generated by basic PD forms. The paper presents research results of the application of the unidirectional artificial neuron networks (ANN) used for the recognition of basic PD forms that can occur in paper-oil insulation impaired by aging processes.
Cutting Conditions and Work Material State Identification through Acoustic Emission Methods
1992
Summary This paper examines the problem of in-process monitoring of metal cutting operations carried out on aluminum alloys for aeronautical applications. Turning tests were conducted on annealed and heat treated aluminum alloy bars, using carbide tools. For both work material conditions, different combinations of cutting parameters were used. During cutting tests, acoustic emission (AE) and cutting force sensor data were detected and processed. The comparison between AE responses from the annealed and heat treated aluminum alloys allowed, with the help of force sensor data, to verify the applicability of AE and sensor fusion techniques for in-process and real time identification of work ma…
Development and applications of transition-edge sensors
2015
This thesis focuses on the theory, development and applications of Transition- Edge Sensor (TES) arrays. The main results are the design and development of a fabrication process for a 256 pixel X-ray TES detector with a novel geometry and the development of a measurement setup for TES detectors used in elemental analysis with Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) measurements. In the early stages of this thesis we fabricated a small scale 32 pixel TES array, but for an actual application purposes the pixel count and the consistency of the fabrication needs to be higher. The cleanroom facilities in the Nanoscience Center are well suited for basic research but they are not suitable for a waf…
