Adherence to oral hormonal anticancer agents in breast cancer.
2022
There is an increasing trend towards using oral antitumoral agents in oncological patients. Compared to parenteral therapy, oral treatment offers convenience for both the patient and the healthcare system, with similar efficacy. However, the benefit deriving from oral drugs will be obtained only if patients adhere strictly to the treatment. Medical oncologists must therefore seek to optimize patient adherence. Breast cancer patients, particularly, are often treated with oral hormonal anticancer agents. In this review, we summarized evidence about adherence of breast cancer patients to oral hormonal anticancer agents and the consequences of poor compliance, the barriers to oral treatment an…
[177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE and [131I]MIBG Phenotypic Imaging-Based Therapy in Metastatic/Inoperable Pheochromocytomas and Paragangliomas: Comparative Result…
2022
PurposeThe aim of the study is to assess phenotypic imaging patterns and the response to treatment with [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE and/or [131I]MIBG in paragangliomas (PGLs) and pheochromocytomas (PHEOs), globally and according to the primary location.MethodsThis is a 17-patient retrospective observational study, with 9 cases treated with [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE and 8 with [131I]MIBG (37 total treatments). Functional imaging scans and treatment responses were studied in order to choose the best therapeutic option and to define the progression-free survival (PFS) and disease control rate (DCR) according to treatment modality and primary location.ResultsAll patients were studied with phenotypic nuclear …
Elaboration of a list of substances of interest as regards to a potential endocrine activity and prioritisation strategy for assessment
2021
Endocrine Disruptor Chemicals (EDCs) are substances that alter function(s) of the endocrine system and consequently cause adverse health effects. The endocrine system consists of many cells and tissues that interact with each other and the rest of the body by means ofhormones. This system is responsible for controlling a large number of processes in the body from gamete formation, to conception and early developmental processes such as organogenesis, and to most tissue and organ functions throughout life. EDCs interfere withendocrine function by many ways and, in doing so, lead to adverse effects on the health of humans and/or wildlife. Some of the observed health effects associated with ED…

Safety of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in Patients With Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: Real-World Use of Lenvatinib and Sorafenib in Korea
2019
Background: Thyroid cancer has become the most common cancer in Korea. Generally, thyroid cancer patients have a good prognosis; however, 15–20% of patients experience recurrence or distant metastasis or are refractory to standard treatment. We assessed the safety of sorafenib and lenvatinib in patients with advanced or metastatic radioactive iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancers (DTC) consecutively treated at a tertiary center in South Korea. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of all consecutive patients with DTC treated during ≥6 months with lenvatinib (February 2016–April 2018) and sorafenib (January 2014–April 2018) at Gangnam Severance Hospital. Patients were tre…
Tryptophan Metabolic Pathways and Brain Serotonergic Activity: A Comparative Review
2019
The essential amino acid L-tryptophan (Trp) is the precursor of the monoaminergic neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT). Numerous studies have shown that elevated dietary Trp has a suppressive effect on aggressive behavior and post-stress plasma cortisol concentrations in vertebrates, including teleosts. These effects are believed to be mediated by the brain serotonergic system, even though all mechanisms involved are not well understood. The rate of 5-HT biosynthesis is limited by Trp availability, but only in neurons of the hindbrain raphe area predominantly expressing the isoform TPH2 of the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH). In the periphery as well as in brain areas …
Associations of Sex Hormones and Hormonal Status With Arterial Stiffness in a Female Sample From Reproductive Years to Menopause
2021
ObjectiveLoss of sex hormones has been suggested to underlie menopause-associated increment in cardiovascular risk. We investigated associations of sex hormones with arterial stiffness in 19–58-years-old women. We also studied associations of specific hormonal stages, including natural menstrual cycle, cycle with combined oral contraceptives (COC) and menopausal status with or without hormone therapy (HT), with arterial stiffness.MethodsThis study includes repeated measurements of 65 healthy women representing reproductive (n=16 natural, n=10 COC-users) and menopause (n=5 perimenopausal, n=26 postmenopausal, n=8 HT-users) stages. Arterial stiffness outcomes were aortic pulse wave velocity (…
