Effects of a home-based rehabilitation program in obese type 2 diabetics.

2012

International audience; OBJECTIVE: To assess, in obese type 2 diabetics (T2D), the impact of a home-based effort training program and the barriers to physical activity (PA) practice. METHOD: Twenty-three obese T2D patients (52.7 ± 8.2 years, BMI = 38.5 ± 7.6 kg/m(2)) were randomized to either a control group (CG), or an intervention group (IG) performing home-based cyclergometer training during 3 months, 30 min/day, with a monthly-supervised session. The initial and final measurements included: maximal graded effort test on cyclergometer, 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and 200-meter fast walk test (200mFWT), quadriceps maximal isometric strength, blood tests and quality of life assessment (SF- 3…

The week after running a marathon: Effects of running vs elliptical training vs resting on neuromuscular performance and muscle damage recovery

2021

Our aim was to compare the effects of two exercise modalities vs resting on the time course of neuromuscular performance and muscle damage recovery during the week after running a marathon. Sixty-four finishers from a road marathon completed the study (54 men and 10 women; 39 ± 4 years; 3 h 35 min ± 21 min). The day before the race, within 15 min after finishing the marathon and at 24, 48, 96, 144 and 192 h postrace, lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase were analysed. Participants also performed a squat jump (SJ) test before and after the marathon and at 48, 96 and 144 h postrace. On their arrival to the finish line, participants were randomized into one of the three intervention group…

High Titers of Thyrotropin Receptor Antibodies Are Associated With Orbitopathy in Patients With Graves Disease.

2018

AbstractContextSerum TSH receptor autoantibody (TSH-R-Ab) is a biomarker of Graves disease (GD). Studies have shown that the levels of this TSH-R-Ab have clinical significance.ObjectiveTo differentiate between thyroidal GD only and Graves orbitopathy (GD + GO).DesignControlled, follow-up study.SettingAcademic tertiary referral center for GD + GO.SubjectsSixty patients with GD, GD + GO, and controls.InterventionSerial serum dilution analyses with six automated, ELISA, and cell-based assays for TSH-R-Ab.Main Outcome MeasureDifferentiation among GD phenotypes.ResultsAll undiluted samples of hyperthyroid-untreated GD patients were positive with the six assays but became negative at dilution 1:9…

Lipid Peroxidation, Protein Oxidation, Gelatinases, and Their Inhibitors in a Group of Adults with Obesity

2019

AbstractThe association between obesity and cardiovascular diseases has a multifactorial pathogenesis, including the synthesis of inflammatory molecules, the increase in oxidative stress and the dysregulation of the matrix metalloprotease (MMP) concentration and activity. In a group of adults with obesity, divided in 2 subgroups according to the body mass index (BMI), we examined lipid peroxidation, expressed as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), protein oxidation, expressed as protein carbonyl groups (PCs), plasma gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9), and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2). In the whole group, as well as in the 2 subgroups (with BMI 30–35 or BMI>35) of o…

Diabetic foot syndrome as a possible cardiovascular marker in diabetic patients

2015

Diabetic foot ulcerations have been extensively reported as vascular complications of diabetes mellitus associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality; in fact, some authors showed a higher prevalence of major, previous and new-onset, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular events in diabetic patients with foot ulcers than in those without these complications. This is consistent with the fact that in diabetes there is a complex interplay of several variables with inflammatory metabolic disorders and their effect on the cardiovascular system that could explain previous reports of high morbidity and mortality rates in diabetic patients with amputations. Involvement of inflammatory marke…

Ezetimibe alone or in combination with simvastatin increases small, dense low-density lipoproteins in healthy men: a randomized trial

2010

Aims The predominance of small dense low-density lipoproteins (sdLDLs) has been associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The effect of ezetimibe on LDL subfraction distribution has not been fully elucidated. This study assessed by gradient gel electrophoresis the effects of ezetimibe alone, simvastatin alone, and their combination on sdLDL subfraction distribution. Methods and results A single-centre, randomized, parallel three-group open-label study was performed in 72 healthy men with a baseline LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration of 111 ± 30 mg/dL (2.9 ± 0.8 mmol/L). They were treated with ezetimibe (10 mg/day, n = 24), simvastatin (40 mg/day, n = 24), or their combination ( n = …

Effect of consumption of a carob pod inositol-enriched beverage on insulin sensitivity and inflammation in middle-aged prediabetic subjects.

2016

This study assessed the effects of an inositol-enriched beverage (IEB) on blood glucose levels and inflammation status in subjects with an impaired fasting glucose (IFG) state according to body mass index (BMI). This was a 12 week, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial employing forty-four IFG subjects (fasting glucose levels 100-125 mg dl-1) that were divided into two intervention groups: one receiving a IEB (n = 24) containing mainly pinitol (2.0 g twice a day), and the other a sweetened beverage based on sucrose (SB; n = 20). Anthropometric and biochemical measurements, postprandial and fasting nocturnal glycaemia (continuous glucose monitoring system), and inflammatory parameters (…

Is there a relationship between varicocele and testosterone levels?

2019

The goal of this work was to study the relationship between presence of varicocele and testosterone serum levels in adulthood.A comparative, cross-sectional study of 387 men who consulted for erectile dysfunction. Age, body mass index (BMI), diabetes (DM), and presence of varicocele were related to testosterone levels through uni- and multi-variate analysis.A total of 248 cases (70.8%) had no varicocele, 46 (13.1%) had grade I varicocele, 36 (10.3%) grade II, and 20 (5.7%) grade III. The mean total testosterone levels were 4.77 ng/mL in the non-varicocele group and 4.34 ng/mL in the varicocele group (We were not able to establish a relationship between the presence of varicocele and decreas…

Diabetes mellitus association with coronavirus disease 2019 ( COVID ‐19) severity and mortality: A pooled analysis

2020

Highlights There are ~ 2-fold increased odds of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and a ~ 2-fold increased risk of odds of mortality in patients with history of diabetes mellitus compared to those without diabetes mellitus. Patients with a history of diabetes mellitus should be closely monitored if they get infected with COVID-19. Results of meta-analysis showing association of diabetes mellitus with severity (Panel A) of disease and mortality (Panel B) in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients.
