Intraoperative ultrasound-assisted approach for endoscopic treatment of vesicoureteral reflux in children
2017
Purpose Despite minimal invasiveness and high success rate, guidelines still prescribe voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG) after endoscopic treatment for vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children. The aim of this paper was to analyze whether intraoperative ultrasound (IO-US) could improve surgical accuracy and perioperative counseling, thus potentially decreasing the need for postoperative VCUG. Methods We selected children treated for moderate to high grade VUR, renal scarring or repeated infections under antibiotic prophylaxis from January to December 2015. Endoscopic injection was combined with IO-US to detect optimal needle placement and to guide mound formation. IO-US findings were compared …

Surgical Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Abdominal Surgery for Neonates and Paediatrics: A RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method Consensus Study.
2022
Surgical site infections (SSIs), i.e., surgery-related infections that occur within 30 days after surgery without an implant and within one year if an implant is placed, complicate surgical procedures in up to 10% of cases, but an underestimation of the data is possible since about 50% of SSIs occur after the hospital discharge. Gastrointestinal surgical procedures are among the surgical procedures with the highest risk of SSIs, especially when colon surgery is considered. Data that were collected from children seem to indicate that the risk of SSIs can be higher than in adults. This consensus document describes the use of preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis in neonates and children that ar…

Confocal laser endomicroscopy is a new imaging modality for recognition of intramucosal bacteria in inflammatory bowel disease in vivo.
2011
International audience; BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Interaction of bacteria with the immune system within the intestinal mucosa plays a key role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aim of the current study was to develop a fluorescein-aided confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) method to visualise intramucosal enteric bacteria in vivo and to determine the involved mucosal area in the colon and ileum in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: Initially, E coli strains expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (pEGFP) were endomicroscopically imaged in mice. In addition, ex vivo and in vivo imaging of fluorescent human enteric bacteri…
Potential of non-invasive breath tests for preselecting individuals for invasive gastric cancer screening endoscopy.
2018
Background. Regular screening for gastric cancer (GC) is based on invasive upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and is limited to few high-incidence countries. As GC is a major cause of cancer death worldwide, a non-invasive, simple screening test is of value. We assessed the prevalence of preclinical GC and the corresponding numbers needed to screen (NNS) to detect GC cases both without and with preselection using breath tests from the literature in various populations. Methods. Using age- and sex-specific GC incidence data and rates of transition from preclinical to clinical GC, we estimated the prevalences of preclinical GC worldwide in populations aged 50–74 years, and we evaluated the accu…
Verifiche Diagnostiche nell'ex Chiesa Madre di Santa Margherita di Belice
2011
The report presents in detail the results of the second campaign of diagnostic investigations, carried out in the architectural restoration site. The goal of minimally invasive and non-destructive evaluation is to assess the proper execution of consolidation through the comparison between the preliminary and post-interve…
Technical Report regarding the outcome of a campaign of minimally invasive and non-destructive surveys conducted in the mother church of Santa Maria delle Stelle in Comiso (RG) on assignment by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Env…
Indagini Diagnostiche nell'Ex Chiesa Madre di Santa Margherita di Belice
2010
The report presents in detail the results of a campaign of non-destructive and minimally invasive diagnostic surveys performed in the former mother church of Santa Margherita di Belice to support, in particular, the study of masonry and stucco decoration. The investi…
Management of antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy in endoscopy: A review of literature
2020
Endoscopic procedures hold a basal risk of bleeding that depends on the type of procedure and patients' comorbidities. Moreover, they are often performed in patients taking antiplatelet and anticoagulants agents, increasing the potential risk of intraprocedural and delayed bleeding. Even if the interruption of antithrombotic therapies is undoubtful effective in reducing the risk of bleeding, the thromboembolic risk that follows their suspension should not be underestimated. Therefore, it is fundamental for each endoscopist to be aware of the bleeding risk for every procedure, in order to measure the risk-benefit ratio for each patient. Moreover, knowledge of the proper management of antithr…
