Evaluation of Zataria multiflora Boiss. essential oil activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes by pr…
2013
Essential oils (EOs) have long been applied as flavoring agents in foods, and due to their content in antimicrobial compounds, they have potential as natural agents for food preservation. Recently, real-time PCR in combination with PMA has successfully been applied to discriminate between live Escherichia coli O157:H7 and dead bacteria killed by cumin, clove, oregano and cinnamon EOs. In this study, initial experiments were performed in order to elucidate the minimum bactericidal concentration of Zataria multiflora EOs on E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes. Thereafter PMA-qPCR was applied in order to selectively quantify life cells within a bacterial population …
A DYNAMIC PERSPECTIVE ON THE MINOR’S RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION: THE LESSON FROM THE CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD (CRC) AND SOME PRACTICAL …
2019
This article aims to investigate the legal status of the minor with particular reference to the profiles of autonomy and determination. Specifically, it analyses the most significant provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (hereinafter CRC) regarding the participation and the role of the minor in the society and the recognition - in terms of legally binding decisions related to his/her life - of his/her decision-taking powers.
Minori di età e formazione dei giovani atleti : storia di una riforma incompiuta
2021
The paper analyses the recent reform of the Italian sport system that includes, for the first time, some new regulations about minors and young athletes. The work underlines that despite the attempt by the legislator, the result is still not satisfying due to the lack of a 'child-centred' perspective.
Picomolar inhibition of cholera toxin by a pentavalent ganglioside GM1os-calix[5]arene
2013
Cholera toxin (CT), the causative agent of cholera, displays a pentavalent binding domain that targets the oligosaccharide of ganglioside GM1 (GM1os) on the periphery of human abdominal epithelial cells. Here, we report the first GM1os-based CT inhibitor that matches the valency of the CT binding domain (CTB). This pentavalent inhibitor contains five GM1os moieties linked to a calix[5]arene scaffold. When evaluated by an inhibition assay, it achieved a picomolar inhibition potency (IC50 = 450 pM) for CTB. This represents a significant multivalency effect, with a relative inhibitory potency of 100000 compared to a monovalent GM1os derivative, making GM1os-calix[5]arene one of the most potent…
Sanitizing food contact surfaces by the use of essential oils
2018
Chemical sanitizers continue to be widely used by the food industry to disinfect food contact surfaces. However, as some chemical disinfectants have been reported to produce unhealthy by-products, alternative and natural compounds need to be investigated. To this end, nine essential oils (EOs) were screened to develop a natural sanitizing solution (SAN) for disinfecting food contact surfaces. Once extracted, their antimicrobial activity and chemical composition were determined. An exploratory multivariate approach was used to investigate the relationships between the chemical and microbiological data sets. Among the tested EOs, Thymbra capitata EO, containing up to 93.31% oxygenated monoter…

Learning from foreign operation modes: The virtuous path for innovation
2020
In this article, we analyze the impact of learning from internationalization on small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) performance along different development paths. Drawing on the exploitation versus exploration logic, we use an alternative view of foreign operation modes (the learning perspective) to provide insights into the impact of such learning on technological and organizational innovation as well as overall performance. Our results, which are derived from a sample of 132 SMEs active in traditional manufacturing industries, point to a path to superior performance that entails resource-augmenting operation modes and organizational innovation. Cultural institutions as agents of urban and community regeneration in the (post-)pandemic city. The case of the «Laboratorio Zen Insieme» in Palermo
2022
Although all cities in the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, its impacts on the territories, yet to be understood, are unevenly distributed, revealing extremely varied imbalances depending on the places. However, it is clear that the virus and its variants have aggravated pre-existing socio-spatial inequalities, creating new ones and bringing attention back to those implications between space, planning, public health and citizenship that are at the origins of contemporary urbanism. In a reference framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized social contexts and g…
