Grapevine pests in Sicily.

More than twenty phytophagous species are reported associated with Sicilian vineyards. Only a quarter of them have to be considered of economic importance. Among moths, the grapevine moth Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller) is certainly the most frequent species. It is considered the key pest on both table and wine grapes, while the incidence of the grape berry moth Eupoecilia ambiguella (Hübner) is scarce and linked to particular biotopes. Three to four flights are reported for the grapevine moth from February-March to October-November, while no data are available for the grape berry moth. Gli erbari possono essere soggetti all’attacco di diverse specie d’insetti che danneggiano le piante essiccate (exsiccata) con la loro attività di alimentazione. Il controllo di queste infestazioni è spesso aggravato dalla difficoltà di poter mettere in atto trattamenti insetticidi. Several studies showed that egg parasitoids are able to detect host sex pheromones produced by adult hosts as a host cue. In this way female wasps are directed toward an area where host mating is in progress and where an oviposition has probably taken place or is soon to occur. Telenomus busseolae Gahan (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is a solitary egg parasitoid of various noctuids (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) belonging to the genera Sesamia. Influence of a humid zone on entomocoenosis diversity.

The authors studied the insect diversity associated to humid and dry zones in the Caselli Nature Reserve (Pisa, Tuscany) in 2016 by using two Malaise traps. The average number of species and individual captures increased in the humid zone to about 118% for species and to 152% for individuals respectively. This richness increase was observed for some families of Coleoptera and Hymenoptera Aculeata and Apoidea. Surprisingly, a richness decrease of Lepidoptera (to 89% and 66% respectively for species and individuals) and Orthoptera (to 44% and 21% respectively for species and individuals) in the humid zone has been observed.

Guilds of herbivore insects of medicinal and aromatic plants are generally composed by poliphagous insects that only occasionally are present at high infestation levels. In this paper the main insect pests observed on Capper spinosa (L.) in Sicily are described. On two Italian Gall Midges (Diptera Cecidomyiidae) and their parasitoids

Some biological data on Cystiphora sonchi (Bremi) and Asphondylia trabuti Marchal in Italy are reported. C. sonchi, previously known only for N Italy, is also recorded for S Italy, Sardinia and Sicily. It induces galls on the leaves of Sonchus spp. (Compositae) all the year around, except for the second half of July and August. The number of galls per leaf was higher in summer (11.6) than in winter (7.4). Overall 5-6 generations per year were observed, with a maximum number of individuals in spring-summer.
