Multimodal biometric recognition systems using deep learning based on the finger vein and finger knuckle print fusion
2020
Recognition systems using multimodal biometrics attracts attention because they improve recognition efficiency and high-security level compared to the unimodal biometrics system. In this study, the authors present a secure multimodal biometrics recognition system based on the deep learning method that uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The authors propose two multimodal architectures using the finger knuckle print (FKP) and the finger vein (FV) biometrics with different levels of fusion: the features level fusion and scores level fusion. The features extraction for FKP and FV are performed using transfer learning CNN architectures: AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet50. The key step aims to …
A Split-Window Algorithm for Estimating LST From Meteosat 9 Data: Test and Comparison With Data and MODIS LSTs
2009
The main purpose of this letter is to give an operational algorithm for retrieving the land surface temperature (LST) using the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager data onboard the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG2) satellite. The algorithm is a split-window method using the two thermal infrared channels IR10.8 and IR12.0. The MODTRAN 4.0 code was used to obtain numerical coefficients of the algorithm proposed. The results show that for viewing angles lower than 50deg the algorithm is capable of producing LST with a standard deviation of 0.7 K and a root-mean-square error (rmse) of 1.3 K. The algorithm has been applied to a series of MSG2 images obtained from an MSG antenna system …
A systematic analysis of duplicate records in Scopus
2015
In recent years, the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus databases have become primary sources for conducting studies that evaluate scientific investigations. Such studies require that duplicate records be excluded to avoid errors of overrepresentation. In this line, we identify duplicate records in Scopus and examine their origins. Identifying journals with duplicate records in Scopus, selecting and downloading bibliographic journal records, and identifying and analyzing the duplicate records is the methodology adopted. Duplicate records are found when articles published in a journal are incorrectly mapped by Scopus to this journal and to a different journal from the same publisher a…
Performance Study of Non-beaconed and Beacon-Enabled Modes in IEEE 802.15.4 under Bluetooth Interference
2008
The IEEE 802.15.4 protocol is a flexible technology with great potential for wireless sensor networks applications. The standard distinguishes two network modes; beacon-enabled and nonbeacon-enabled. In this paper, the performance study of beaconed and non-beaconed modes of IEEE 802.15.4 is evaluated using on site PER measurements. The tests are carryout in an urban outdoor environment with commercial available equipment. Likewise, the impact of Bluetooth interference over IEEE 802.15.4 modes is evaluated. The results show that Bluetooth interference and the mode selected have effects over the PER. Furthermore, for distances between 3 to 10 meters the PER doesn't show significance distance …
Early-design improvement of human reliability in an experimental facility: A combined approach and application on SPES
2019
Abstract SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is a second-generation Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) facility for advanced nuclear physics applications, currently under construction at INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics) of Legnaro, Italy. Despite the potentially important safety implications of human errors for ISOL facilities, only a limited number of studies addressing this issue have been performed worldwide. This paper tries to address this need by means of an integrated approach of Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) and three human error quantification methods: HEART (in an enhanced version), SPAR-H, and CREAM. The application of multiple Human Reliability Analysis (…
A New Fitness Test of Estimating VO2max in Well-Trained Rowing Athletes
2021
BackgroundThis study was designed to investigate the validity of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) estimation through the Firstbeat fitness test (FFT) method when using submaximal rowing and running programs for well-trained athletes.MethodsWell-trained flatwater rowers (n = 45, 19.8 ± 3.0 years, 184 ± 8.7 cm, 76 ± 12.9 kg, and 58.7 ± 6.0 mL⋅kg–1⋅min–1) and paddlers (n = 45, 19.0 ± 2.5 years, 180 ± 7.7 cm, 74 ± 9.4 kg, and 59.9 ± 4.8 mL⋅kg–1⋅min–1) completed the FFT and maximal graded exercise test (GXT) programs of rowing and running, respectively. The estimated VO2max was calculated using the FFT system, and the measured VO2max was obtained from the GXT programs. Differences between the…
Visual and optical performance with hybrid multifocal intraocular lenses
2010
During the past years, the wish to become independent of spectacles has been growing among cataract and presbyopic patients due to many factors, such as the increase in near visual demands, the aesthetic need for a spectacle-free image and ageing of refractive surgery patients, among others. This review assesses recently published studies that analyse visual and optical performance through different metrics of eyes implanted with multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs), particularly hybrid IOL designs. The published evidence suggests that hybrid multifocal IOLs provide very good outcomes in a number of visual and optical performance parameters. Patients implanted with this type of IOL obtain a…
Characterization of impervious layers using scale models and an inverse method
2009
We describe a novel procedure that uses an inverse method to determine unknown parameters for impervious layers used in multilayer structures. The proposed model of the multilayer structure is limited to an ideal double plate separated by an unbonded, fibrous, sound-absorbing material. Experimental data were obtained by nearfield acoustic holography for the calculation of the transmission loss of various multilayer structures mounted in a window in a wooden box designed specifically for this purpose. We used the Trochidis and Kalaroutis forecast model of acoustic insulation for multilayer structures, which is based on a spatial Fourier transform. The experimental pressure and velocity data …
Vectofocimetry: Dioptric power measurement in manual focimeters using power vectors
2021
Abstract Dioptric power measurement is classically achieved using manual focimeters. In this contribution, we present vectofocimetry as a novel methodology to be easily implemented in manual focimeters for improving their capabilities regarding dioptric power measurement. The new procedure is conceptually based on power vector formalism of dioptric power which represents the dioptric power as three values in the form of [M, J0, J45], it uses an iterative process of blur reduction, and it only requires a few modifications in the device that are easy-to-adapt and cost-effective. As a result, dioptric power measurements are easily and quickly obtained with comparable results to the reported on…
